June's winning picture

Overall winner

Entitled U Bein Bridge Sunset, this fascinating photo was captured in Myanmar, Mandalay by Allan Harris, who says:

“A very touristy thing to do, watching the sunset over this old teak bridge but we sat quietly in our boat as the light changed and people walked across the bridge, some tourists but many locals."

The finalists' entries were judged by internationally acclaimed author, Carl Honoré. Here he explains how he came to choose the winner: “with its winning blend of light, composition and drama, this picture delivers exactly what I want from a Slow Moment."

As the overall winner, Allan will enjoy a holiday to the Shores of Lake Constance, where he will use his skills to complete a photographic assignment for us. Congratulations, Allan, and we hope that you enjoy your trip.

There were many other highly commended entries; take a look at a few of our favourites below:

Intermittent bells heralded his arrival. Out of the pink dawn mist, its tendrils curling around his silhouette, he emerged from amongst the grey rocks. Goats nibbled pungent alpine herbs selectively as they approached us. Like a bearded biblical prophet he rested on his stick to greet us. Aeons of grief and toil were etched on his furrowed face: 'German?' he asked. 'No, English.' It was the right answer.

The dog days of summer are over; there's a pleasing languor in the Basilicata. The tomatoes have been harvested, the olives yet to be raked down. It's siesta time in the white hilltop village that clings to the hillside and I hear only the four bell tolls of the hour and the slap of my sandals in quiet stairs and squares and narrow streets. The pre Roman graves and fading medieval convent frescoes proclaim the endurance of an authenticity and a simplicity and it's here I see the world as it was and was always intended to be.
