May's Photo of the Month | Posted: 12 June 2017

Entitled Passing the time, this well balanced shot by Gaz Williams was captured one day while strolling through the otherwise bustling and noisy city of Bologna. He says:

“The artist and the card players, whiling away the hours in front of the timeless buildings of Bologna, epitomise slow.”

May's judge was Jack Montgomery, photographer, walker and blogger, and co-owner of Buzz Trips with his wife Andrea.

Here, he tells us why he selected this photograph as the winner, plus the two runners-up.

"This was really hard again, the standard seems to be getting better and better all the time. After much deliberation these are the three I picked."

Winner – "Passing the time" in Bologna by Gaz Williams
"This captures the essence of slow travel for me. It's a beautifully balanced shot which, as well as being attractive, perks the interest. What game are the men playing? What's the lone man off to the left sketching? The faded grandeur of the building with its peeling plaster facade adds elegance to the scene and I particularly like the fact the men are framed in the arched doorway."

First Runner up – "Tobacco farmers" in Vinales, Cuba, by Paul Wynn
"It was a close call as this is such a beautiful and interesting shot; there's a lot going on but it's not overly busy. I love everything about this image – the subject matter, the multi-layered composition, the contrasting colours. You can imagine stumbling across a scene like this whilst on a walking route."

Second Runner up – "Something fishy" in Toulouse by Jacob Goldberg
"Another super shot, the carefully chosen angle shows off the incredible array of fish and seafood brilliantly. Good photos of local markets are ideal for capturing slow travel and the explosion of colour from the selection of fish on display really makes this one pop. I want to be there, filling my basket with fish whose names I can't pronounce."
