Cross-country skiing

In highland Norway, the snow arrives in early November and lasts until late April. This, and the 200 kilometres of trails, make Fefor (which forms part of the vast Peer Gynt Domain) the perfect place for cross-country skiing, whether you are an accomplished skier or just starting out. Trails lead directly from the hotel around the frozen lake and up onto the fjells  beyond the opposite shore. The initial descent from the hotel down to the lake is better suited to more advanced skiers (or at least those who are confident skiing downhill), but once you are down by the lake it is possible to explore far and wide; the Peer Gynt trail leading to Gålå is an especially rewarding day out. For the more adventurous, a trail heads to the historic cabin of King Haakon VII along a waymarked back-country trail – this is also where his son and successor, the much-loved King Olav V, made his first tracks in the snow.

Cross-country skiing

Wherever you go, there is a unique sense of discovering a pristine wilderness as you wind through snow-laden forests and up above the treeline. It is also possible to ski to one of several nearby hotels for lunch before returning to Fefor during the afternoon.

The staff in the hire shop at the hotel are particularly helpful, and will happily take the time to advise you on the most appropriate trails to tackle, and even on the correct ski wax to use, depending on the prevailing snow conditions. Lessons can also be booked here, and it is reassuring to know that you are in such expert hands. Alternatively, join one of several guided trips organised throughout the week while you find your feet.

Downhill skiing

For downhill skiing, head to nearby Gålå (30 minutes by taxi; pay locally) which offers fifteen pistes (six green, five blue, three red and one black).

Other activities

To ring the changes, other activities include curling, ice-skating, ice-fishing, snowshoeing, guided ski tours and dog sledding. You’ll be spoiled for choice!
