A Northern Lights break in Tromsø

Nothing can quite prepare you for the staggeringly beautiful natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis. Elusive and hard to predict they may be, but witnessing the Northern Lights in all their mesmerising glory is an experience never to be forgotten.

Located deep within the Arctic Circle – on the same latitude as Alaska and Siberia – the historic island city of Tromsø offers some of the best opportunities for seeing the Lights in Northern Europe.
This ‘gateway to the Arctic’ also makes an excellent base for a varied winter break: by day you can explore the city’s iconic cathedral and fascinating museums or take your pick from the variety of thrilling snow-based activities on offer – including dog-sledding and reindeer safaris. And then when darkness falls, it’s time to head out on a hunt for the Lights with our experienced and enthusiastic guide, who will do all he can to ensure you see those surreal swirls of light dance across the inky night skies.

10 things you need...
...to successfully photograph the Northern Lights. Our Northern Lights guide, Dan Steinbakk, is an accomplished nature photographer. He has taken some incredible shots of the Aurora over the years, so we asked him how he does it.

Winter activities

Besides the included Northern Lights excursion, there’s no fixed itinerary, so take your pick of the activities as the mood takes you.
  • Arrival in Tromsø
Depending on your time of arrival, you may like to take a stroll around town or just settle into the hotel.
  • Hunting the Lights
While the highlight of your day will undoubtedly be the evening excursion in search of the Lights, you have plenty of time beforehand to explore Tromsø. Occupying the eastern edge of the small island of Tromsøya, this is a fairly compact city and one which is easy to navigate on foot – we provide notes for a self-guided walking tour to help you find your way. There are several small but fascinating museums, including the Polar Museum and the Northern Lights Observatory – both of which are well worth a visit – and not one, but two cathedrals: the Domkirke, with its tall spire; and the 20th-century Arctic Cathedral, an iconic structure which resembles an iceberg. Tromsø is also home to the world’s most northerly university and northernmost brewery.

As dusk falls, you will be collected by our guide and driven out of Tromsø to begin an atmospheric excursion in search of the Northern Lights. Although they are a completely unpredictable phenomenon, you will be taken to where the prevailing conditions are most promising – often as far as the border with Finland – and, if you are lucky, you will be able to enjoy the ‘show’ with a hot drink around a campfire.

  • Dog-sledding & more
After a late night, you may decide to take it easy today, although that would mean missing out on the wide range of winter activities available from the city (all of which can be arranged locally). For a real thrill, you could join a dog-sledding trip across the tundra, while more sedate options include the chance to learn about the life of a Sami reindeer herder followed by a reindeer safari into the forest.

Where you stay

Tromsø is a small and friendly city, set on an island with a beautiful mountain backdrop. Largely saved from damage during World War II, its centre is made up of differently coloured wooden houses, which today jostle for position with the more modern developments. As befits a university city, there is a good choice of restaurants, bars, cafés and shops, all within easy walking distance of the hotel.

FAQs

If you have any questions relating to this or any other Inntravel holiday, our friendly travel experts will be happy to help. You might also find our General FAQs section helpful.
  • Living far from the capital ourselves, we know better than most that flying from London can be a bind, so we are very flexible with our travel arrangements. Call or email us, and one of the team will be happy to list the different options available to you, and any price implications.
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Norway, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). There is no need to apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) as this (and still-current EHICs) is not valid in Norway. However, should you need medical help, you can show your UK passport at the medical facility and treatment will be provided on the same terms as for Norwegian nationals. It is important that, if you already have travel insurance in place, the terms do not exclude medical cover, especially for existing conditions, in the absence of an EHIC.
  • The most widely spoken language is Norwegian. The currency is the Kroner. Norwegian time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.
