What can you expect from an Inntravel winter holiday in the Alps? Not crowded slopes and busy restaurants, but picturesque valleys punctuated by silent forests and serene villages, and framed by snowy peaks that climb high into the sky. From our high-quality hotels, you have a wide choice of ways to explore: crunch through the snow on foot or by snowshoes; soar up high by cable car for breathtaking views; and savour delicious Alpine flavours at an authentic inn. Culture is often close at hand, too, whether that’s a trip to an iconic castle, a local artisan or a beautiful city.

Where winter reigns supreme
The snow-sure Nordic lands are every bit as spectacular as the Alps, but the scenery here is rugged and untamed – think undulating fells rather than towering peaks. At our traditional Norwegian hotels, cross-country skiing is king, but you can also head out on snowshoes or a dog-sled – it’s a real thrill to whizz through snow-clad forests with only the huskies’ eager panting to break the silence. In Finland, the range of activities feels limitless, from winter walking to reindeer safaris to ice-fishing, complemented at the end of each day by the chance to unwind in a relaxing sauna.

Wind your way along specially flattened paths in your normal walking boots, with time while you are out walking both to pause for refreshments and to appreciate the views – perhaps of snow-white peaks rising sharply against crisp blue skies.

Snowshoeing

Crunch through silent woodland and across tranquil slopes inaccessible to skiers and walkers, keeping your eyes peeled for wildlife as you are snowshoeing. On some of our holidays, there are torch-lit trails to enjoy after the light fades.

Cross-country skiing

The friendliness of fellow skiers, the joy of being out in the snow and close to nature, plus the chance to fully take in your surroundings all make cross-country skiing a very appealing prospect. It’s also surprisingly easy to master.

Sleigh rides

A particularly beautiful way to explore your destination. With a blanket over your knees to keep you warm, sit back, relax and enjoy watching the scenery glide by as a horse (or, in Finland, a reindeer) pulls you steadily onwards.

Tobogganing

Awaken your inner child by hiring a traditional wooden toboggan and whizzing downhill at pace. In the Alps, toboggan runs are usually at least a kilometre in length, sometimes with the odd bend thrown in for good measure.

Dog-sledding

Get to know your team of eager sled dogs, learn the basic commands, then head off into the wilderness, enjoying the feeling of crisp air against your face and the swoosh of the sled as it bounds excitedly across the snow.

An Arctic winter

For a unrivalled winter experience, head to Lapland, deep within the Arctic Circle. In addition to more common winter activities, here you can try snowmobiling, ice-fishing and even fat-biking – an increasingly popular Nordic sport.

What makes an Inntravel snow holiday unique?

Inntravel holidays take place on the quiet side of the mountain, away from crowded ski scopes. Our holidays focus on the unique experience of being in the Alps or northern Europe over winter, when the blanket of snow that covers the countryside muffles every sound and heightens the senses.
Are Inntravel holidays suitable for non-skiers?

Very definitely! Our chosen villages offer a variety of non-skiing activities (take a look at Moso, Pertisau, Weidach, Ramsau, Kandersteg and Sils, for example), and an increasing number of our customers choose not to ski at all during their time away – our winter discovery holidays are designed specifically with non-skiers in mind.
Are winter walking and snowshoeing easy to pick up?

Yes. Winter walking, because it’s along specially flattened trails, is exactly like normal walking – you can even wear your normal waterproof walking boots. Snowshoeing doesn’t require any special technique either – you just need to walk with your feet slightly further apart than usual.
What are the villages like?

It varies. Some villages are tiny, secluded places where you can escape the everyday world; others are larger, with various shops and cafés, but all remain charmingly unspoiled – and tranquil.
Do I need special gear or clothing?

No special clothing is needed for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter walking – we recommend the following for all three of these winter activities:
• Lightweight waterproof jacket
• Several thin layers for your top half (those made of breathable, fast-wicking fabrics are ideal)
• Waterproof walking boots (swap these for cross-country shoes when skiing)
• Winter-weight walking trousers or tracksuit bottoms
• Knee-length socks
• Sunglasses
• Gloves
• Rucksack
