This Holiday in a nutshell
  • explore Trondheim, Norway’s original capital
  • scenic journeys by rail
  • charming, fascinating Røros
  • explore Oslo, the modern capital
  • visit Sami reindeer herders

This relaxed winter holiday, combining the historic charm of Norway’s original capital, Trondheim; the UNESCO-listed town of Røros; and the modern capital Oslo, is full of surprising contrasts and unexpected delights. Not only do you journey through magical winter scenery as you travel by train between these fascinating destinations, but you also take a trip into Norway’s past.

The little town of Røros has long-established traditions, and its own unique and fascinating charm. By keeping all your senses alert, being curious and allowing your imagination to flow freely, you may find yourself being carried back to life in a different era.

In fact, you are taken back some 1,000 years – Trondheim was founded by a Viking chieftain in 997. Its cathedral, the largest medieval building in Scandinavia, serves as the final resting place for several kings, while the colourfully painted timber warehouses that stand on stilts along the wharf recall its glory days as an important port. Close to the Swedish border, Røros is even more atmospheric. Silversmiths and manufacturers of the town’s famous tweed may have replaced the copper miners, but the cluster of 17th and 18th-century wooden mine workers’ houses at its heart lend the town a great sense of history. Finally, you come all the way back up-to-date with time to explore the modern, vibrant capital, Oslo.
