Holiday information

A winter holiday in Moso, Dolomites,

for skiers and non-skiers
Silent and spectacular, Italy’s northernmost corner is ruled over by the magnificent Dolomites, their pale, jagged peaks rising over 3,000 metres into the sky. In the valleys below, traditional South Tyrolean villages and dense pine forests nestle peacefully, enveloped in a thick blanket of snow.

It is here, set on a sunny plateau at the entrance to the Fischlein Valley, that you will find Moso.
This tranquil village makes a great base for exploring some of Italy’s most dramatic landscapes, including the famed ‘Three Peaks’ Nature Park. There are many excellent winter walking paths and cross-country skiing trails within the valley itself, and those a little farther afield can be accessed via the local bus and train network, free to hotel guests. During your stay, be sure to visit nearby Toblach, or Dobbiaco as it’s known in Italian – this is Italy’s premier cross-country skiing destination and a frequent host of high-profile skiing events.

Rewarding trails and UNESCO-listed scenery are far from the area’s only charms, however: this mountainous corner of Italy also has a fascinating cultural identity. As recently as the early 20th century, South Tyrol belonged not to Italy, but to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the region still has much in common with its northern neighbours – namely a rich and traditional way of life, charming Tyrolean architecture, and a delicious and unique cuisine that successfully blends Alpine flavours with Italian flair.

Our expert says

“If you're looking for somewhere extra special scenery-wise, the Dolomites is the place to go. Dramatic views aren't the only reason for coming here, however. The hospitality is first-rate, and the winter walking and cross-country skiing, excellent.”

Winter activities

There’s no fixed itinerary, so take your pick of the activities as the mood takes you.
  • 200km of trails in the Drei Zinnen region; suited to all levels
The cross-country trails around Moso and the Sexten Valley form part of the Drei Zinnen region, which, along with world-renowned Toblach (Dobbiaco), is Italy’s number one cross-country skiing destination.

Of the many routes accessible from Moso itself, the one closest to the hotel is perfect for beginners – or as a morning warm-up before heading farther afield. More challenging options lie a short walk away, with the region’s full complement of trails also within easy reach thanks to the regular and efficient local transport network. Your included Holidaypass entitles you to free use of both the local buses and trains, though a trail pass is required to access the trails.

Here are some of our favourite options:

    Fischleintal: 4.5km
This beautiful trail explores the traffic-tree Fischlein Valley, and can be reached either by bus or on skis. It leads through forest to reach the Talschlusshütte – a small mountain inn which began life as a ‘refreshment point’ in 1953 and is now run by the third generation of the Villgrater family. The kitchen here serves a tasty selection of South Tyrolean specialities, with an emphasis on local produce. After visiting the inn, you have the option of extending your route by 1.5 kilometres for wonderful views of the Sexten Dolomite peaks.

    Toblacher Lake circuit: 7km
Beginning from the cross-country stadium in nearby Toblach – half an hour’s journey by bus and train from Moso – this circular route takes you through snow-covered woodland before emerging beside the lake shore. When you reach the western edge of the lake, we suggest calling into the Restaurant Seeschupfe, which serves traditional Alpine cuisine and excellent Kaiserschmarrn – the sweet, shredded pancake that was a favourite of the Austrian Emperior, Franz Joseph I.

    Moso to Innichen: 7km
Starting from Moso, this intermediate-level trail follows the Sextner Bach stream along the valley floor. It initially descends into the neighbouring village of Sexten before continuing past the Gasthaus zum Klaus – a good refreshment stop – to reach the historic market town of Innichen. From here, you can take the bus back to Moso, or make the uphill journey back on skis.

  • 100km in the Drei Zinnen region
The opportunities for winter walking from Moso are wonderful – the valley is home to an extensive network of maintained paths, with further trails branching off into the adjoining, traffic-free valleys. Many of these routes explore peaceful, tree-lined landscapes; for views of the area’s famous Three Peaks, take advantage of the mountain transport to head to higher ground.

Whichever trail you choose, there will always be the option to pause for refreshments – whether just a warming drink or something more substantial such as Knödel, the tasty Tyrolean dumpling that is never off local menus.

All trails are well signed, and the snow specially flattened to facilitate walking. In the detailed documentation we provide, we give an overview of our four favourite options, including the following three routes:

    Fischleintal: 1.5hrs
One of Moso’s ‘classic’ walks, this lovely route runs parallel to a small river as it heads gently uphill to reach the head of the valley. Here, you will find the Talschlusshütte – a small mountain inn which began life as a ‘refreshment point’ in 1953 and is now run by the third generation of the Villgrater family. The kitchen here serves a tasty selection of South Tyrolean specialities, with an emphasis on local produce. Access to the trail is by bus.

    Innerfeldtal: 2hrs
Located a very short bus ride from Moso, the serene Innerfeld Valley is also a delight to explore on foot. This trail begins from the entrance to the valley and leads through larch woods to the Drei Schuster Hütte, which was first built between 1911-1913 and serves typical regional dishes such as Knödel (dumpling), Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake) and homemade Apfelkiachlan (fried apple rings). From the inn, it’s possible to descend down the valley by toboggan!

    Klammbachalm
One especially scenic option is to take a cable car up to 2,092 metres, from where you get a breathtaking view of the Three Peaks that give the region its name. From the top of the cable car, a pretty route leads towards the peaceful Klammbach hut where you can enjoy a well-earned drink on the sunny terrace. From the hut, choose either to retrace your route uphill to the cable car station, or to continue to the Kreuzbergpass, from where you catch the bus back to Moso.

  • Snowshoeing, downhill skiing & more

    Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is a fantastic way of discovering the area’s enchanting wintry landscapes. Although there are a number of marked routes, the shoes’ firm grip also enables you to step away from the prepared trails and immerse yourself in unspoiled nature. Should you prefer to join a group hike, these take place several times a week and can be organised through the hotel.

    Downhill skiing
There are 100 kilometres of downhill pistes in the Drei Zinnen region, best suited to new and intermediate skiers. The beginner-friendly Rotwand slopes are just a short walk from the hotel, with more challenging domains a free bus ride away.

    Tobogganing
A ride to the top of the Rotwand cable car station also brings you to the start of the local toboggan run, which descends over 5 kilometres, passing through scenic woodland and snow-covered meadows. Toboggans can be borrowed from the hotel or hired locally.

    Horse-drawn sleigh rides
One of the more relaxing ways to explore the region is by horse-drawn sleigh. Your hotel is able to organise rides through the Fischlein Valley, with refreshments included.

  • Special events
There are traditional celebrations on Christmas Eve, as well as a special festive dinner. The hotel’s New Year’s Eve celebrations feature live music, a special evening meal and after-dinner festivities.

Where you stay

The peaceful village of Moso (altitude: 1310m) is superbly positioned in the Three Peaks region. There is a small collection of shops in the village itself, with further amenities available in larger Sexten, located just 2 kilometres along the valley and reached by a short walk or an even shorter bus ride.

Please note: most beds in Tyrolean hotels are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. We refer to these as 'Austrian Twins' and they are locally regarded to serve requests for both double and twin-bedded rooms. Separate twin beds or traditional double beds with one large mattress are rare and cannot be guaranteed.

Wake up refreshed in Innsbruck, and enjoy a leisurely coffee or a stroll before taking your seat to admire Alpine panoramas as the train crosses the Brenner Pass into Italy. The views continue as you change to a brightly coloured local train heading deep into the Pustertal Valley.

  • If you are travelling over Christmas or New Year, or during school holidays, you should definitely pre-book lessons. After you’ve booked your holiday with us, we’ll send you a link to a list of options that we can arrange for you in advance.
Sometimes we can’t make bookings on your behalf. In these cases you should phone or email the ski school well before your holiday to arrange a date and time; do not wait until you are on holiday to make arrangements.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Italy, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • The principal official language is Italian, though some regions have a second official language, such as South Tyrol, where German is widely spoken. The currency is the Euro. Italian time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.
  • For information on the practicalities of travel now that the UK is no longer part of the European Union, visit www.gov.uk/visit-eu-switzerland-norway-iceland-liechtenstein.
  • The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) provides up-to-date, country-by-country travel advice, as well as information on security, local laws, passports and visas for UK citizens.
