A winter break in Bavaria

for non-skiers
Pretty Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, nestling alongside the Ramsauer Ache river in the heart of the Berchtesgaden National Park, is an archetypal Bavarian village, steeped in culture and tradition. This is Bavaria in winter at its most beautiful, and here you will find a stylish hotel that oozes charm and warm hospitality.

Standing in meadows, the Berghotel Rehlegg began life as a farm several generations ago and has slowly evolved into the 4-star superior hotel you find today. It offers a delightful blend of restaurant, spa and village tavern where comfort combines with a relaxed atmosphere. And if the spa facilities are superb and the dining excellent, the service from the Lichtmannegger family and their team is even better.
If you can tear yourself away from the hotel, you'll be amazed by how much this idyllic corner of Germany has to offer: from scenic walks alongside lakes; boat trips through fjord-like scenery; chairlifts to panoramic viewpoints; and charming towns all within easy reach, it's the perfect place to experience the beauty of the Bavarian winter.

Our expert says

“Although there is skiing nearby, this is more of a place for non-skiers, for people who just want to enjoy winter scenery from a very high-quality spa hotel in a chocolate-box village.”

Winter activities

There’s no fixed itinerary, so you can choose to do as much or as little as you like and explore this Bavarian idyll at your own pace.
  • Choice of routes
High mountains, deep valleys and crystal-clear Alpine lakes define this charming, protected corner of Bavaria bordering Austria. The superb scenery attracts many walkers over the summer months, and a number of the same paths are accessible in winter, too. Several of these trails lead from Ramsau itself, while further options can be reached using the local bus service – free with your visitor’s card.

In the detailed documentation we provide, we give an overview of our three favourite options, including the two following routes:

    Hintersee: 9.5km
Starting from the centre of Ramsau, this lovely walk meanders alongside the River Ache and passes through an enchanted forest to reach picturesque Hintersee. Many artists and poets have found inspiration in the dramatic beauty of this lake, and reproductions of the most famous works can be found on easels that line the lake shores. Along the route, you’ll come across cosy wood-panelled Stuben (inns) where you can stop awhile – taste a local dish along with a cool Bavarian Weissbier (wheatbeer) or warm up with a decadent Zartbitter Heisse Schokolade – dark hot chocolate with whipped cream.

Klausbachtal & Berchtesgaden National Park: 2km
Ramsau sits on the edge of the Berchtesgaden National Park – one of the oldest protected areas in the Alps. We suggest taking the bus to Hintersee to enjoy a short walk through the trees and into the park, which is home to a number of wild animal feeding stations. Time your visit right and you could well be treated to the magical sight of wild red deer and chamois feeding in the forest! As this walk is short, it combines well with lunch at one of the restaurants or cafés surrounding Hintersee – we particularly recommend the Auzingerhof for its warm Bavarian hospitality and great cakes.

  • Königssee & Berchtesgaden

    An idyllic lake
Sparkling at the foot of its mountainous guardians, picturesque Königssee is an enjoyable day out and very much worth the trip. Sailing silently across the water on an electric boat is the best way to fully experience the exceptional, fjord-like scenery; this journey will take you past the beautiful church of St Bartholomä, whose onion dome reflected in the still water is the iconic image of the lake. If, in the depth of winter, the boats are unable to run, there is still the option to enjoy a beautiful walk along forested, lakeside paths to reach the Malerwindel viewpoint.

    A town of frescoed houses
Renowned for its traditional wooden crafts, Berchtesgaden, with its frescoed buildings, shops and Marktplatz, is just a short bus ride away. From the town, look up to see the famous Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), Hitler's mountain tea house (closed in winter), high on the summit of the Kehlstein mountain overlooking the town.

  • Mozart's city
Ornate buildings, elegant squares and elaborate fountains – Salzburg is one of the finest Baroque cities north of the Alps, and it is just over an hour’s bus journey from Ramsau. We provide detailed, self-guided walking notes to help you get the most from your visit; these will lead you to the Residenzplatz – where you’ll find the magnificent cathedral, Bishop’s Palace and Glockenspiel, which rings its 35 bells several times daily – and to the childhood home of the city’s most famous son, one Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We also recommend our favourite places to pause for Kaffee und Kuchen – such as the 300-year-old Café Tomaselli, a Viennese-style coffee house.

    Wander the streets of Salzburg
  • Snowshoeing & more

    Snowshoeing
It’s a very special experience exploring silent, wintry landscapes where the only footprint in the snow is your own. Snowshoeing gives you access to such untouched areas, and is consequently a hugely rewarding activity. It is also very easy to master – it’s simply a case of getting used to walking in the broad snowshoes.

    Tobogganing
For some fast-paced fun, ride the chair lift to Hochschwarzeck and enjoy the magnificent view from the top before zooming down the 2.3-kilometre toboggan run.

    Cross-country skiing
Should you wish to try your hand at skiing, there are 30 kilometres of cross-country trails in the meadows above Ramsau and around nearby Schönau. Access to the trails is free of charge.

    Horse-drawn sleigh rides
A wonderfully relaxing way to see the local countryside is to take a horse-drawn sleigh ride into the National Park. Rides can be organised locally.

Where you stay

Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden (altitude: 670m) is one of the most picturesque of all Bavarian villages and is situated in the heart of the Berchtesgaden National Park, where the Watzmann, Germany’s third-highest mountain, provides an impressive backdrop. It is Germany's first official 'mountaineering village', and it's said there are more mountain guides here than anywhere else in Germany. Passionate about preserving Alpine customs and traditions, this is storybook Bavaria.

The village’s strikingly picturesque parish church of Saint Sebastian graces many a postcard of Bavaria. Built in 1512, the Baroque, single onion-shaped tower topped with wooden tiles is typical of the region. Sitting alongside the river with a backdrop of the Reiteralp mountain, it has become the quintessential image of Bavaria. In the village centre you'll find a bank and ATM, a small well-equipped supermarket, a bakery, craft shops and a couple of cafés.

Please note: most beds in German hotels are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. We refer to these as 'Austrian Twins' and they are locally regarded to serve requests for both double and twin bedded rooms. Separate twin beds or traditional double beds with one large mattress are rare and cannot be guaranteed.

FAQs

If you have any questions relating to this or any other Inntravel holiday, our friendly travel experts will be happy to help. You might also find our General FAQs section helpful.
  • Living far from the capital ourselves, we know better than most that flying from London can be a bind, so we are very flexible with our travel arrangements. Call or email us, and one of the team will be happy to list the different options available to you, and any price implications.
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Germany, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • The official language is German. The currency is the Euro. German time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.
  • For information on the practicalities of travel now that the UK is no longer part of the European Union, visit www.gov.uk/visit-eu-switzerland-norway-iceland-liechtenstein.
  • The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) provides up-to-date, country-by-country travel advice, as well as information on security, local laws, passports and visas for UK citizens.
