A winter break in Fuschl

for non-skiers
After the last of its summer visitors have departed, a wonderful serenity descends on Fuschl, the lakeside village located at the heart of Austria’s picturesque Salzkammergut region. If you wish to get away from it all amid glorious surroundings, this is the place to choose for your winter escape.

One of the highlights of this relaxing short break is the chance to stay at the excellent Hotel Seerose, which enjoys an enviable location on the lake’s eastern shores, and whose panoramic swimming pool and superb restaurant are highly praised by guests.
The area’s other main draw is its spellbinding scenery, which is perhaps best appreciated by donning your walking boots and taking to the trails. There are some lovely options around Fuschl, from lakeside paths to routes that criss-cross snowy meadows and serene woodland. For something a little more cultural, both the former imperial town of Bad Ischl and beautiful, cosmopolitan Salzburg are within easy reach of your hotel, and make a memorable day out.

Winter activities

There’s no fixed itinerary, so you can choose to do as much or as little as you like and explore this tranquil corner of Austria at your own pace.
  • Explore the local countryside
    Walking is a popular summertime activity in the Salzkammergut region, and a number of the same scenic routes are available throughout the winter months. Access to these trails is easy – the local bus service passes through Fuschl every hour, and your hotel also organises a free, twice-weekly shuttle to give guests the choice of several other walks.

    In the detailed documentation we provide, we give an overview of our three favourite options, including the following two routes:

    Lake Fuschl circuit: 11km
    Beginning from the door of your hotel, this lovely route leads around the lake, at one point passing Schloss Fuschl – a castle-cum-hotel (currently closed for refurbishment) that has been welcoming archbishops and film stars since the mid-15th century.

    Strobl to St Gilgen: 4hrs
    This delightful walk takes you along the northern shore of Lake Wolfgang and into the pretty village of the same name, which is a wonderfully tranquil place to pause and appreciate the beauty of winter. From St Wolfgang, you follow lakeside paths, quiet lanes and woodland trails to cross the Falkenstein peninsula and reach St Gilgen, another picturesque settlement huddled by the waterside. This option starts and ends with a short bus journey.

  • Imperial towns & pretty villages
    Fuschl makes an excellent base from which to explore the beautiful Salzkammergut region – an area whose 67 lakes have led many to label it ‘Austria’s Lake District’. The landscape is certainly very dramatic, with steep-sided mountains plunging into the deep waters, and there is also a strong sense of tradition among the region’s inhabitants. Of interest to visit are:

    Bad Ischl
    Best known as the favoured summer residence of the once-mighty Austro-Hungarian monarchs, who described it as “heaven on earth”, Bad Ischl is also a lovely place to visit during the cooler months. The town’s star attraction is the Kaiservilla, where Emperor Franz Joseph I and his family spent their summers and where the Emperor signed the declaration of war on Serbia that triggered the eventual outbreak of World War I. We take in the Kaiservilla on our self-guided walking tour of the town, which also visits the renowned thermal spa baths and tempting Konditorei Café Zauner – a must-try pâtisserie. Bad Ischl can be accessed by bus from Fuschl, with the journey taking just under an hour.

    Lake Wolfgang
    Within even closer reach of Fuschl is Wolfgangsee – one of the more famous lakes in the Salzkammergut region. Clustered around its shores are the pretty villages of Strobl, St Gilgen and St Wolfgang, all three of which are lovely places to soak in the lake’s tranquil, wintry beauty. St Gilgen is known for its ties with Mozart – his mother was born here in 1720, and you can still view her former family home in the centre of the village.

    Zwölferhorn
    Many Inntravel guests describe the experience of taking a cable car up the Zwölferhorn – the 1,521-metre peak that towers behind St Gilgen – as the highlight of their holiday. From the top of the cable car station, there is a panoramic footpath which, on clear days, offers spectacular views over the surrounding lakes and mountains.

  • Mozart's city
    Ornate buildings, elegant squares and elaborate fountains – Salzburg is one of the finest Baroque cities north of the Alps, and it is less than an hour’s bus journey from Fuschl. We provide detailed, self-guided walking notes to help you get the most from your visit; these will lead you to the Residenzplatz – where you’ll find the magnificent cathedral, Bishop’s Palace and Glockenspiel, which rings its 35 bells several times daily – and to the childhood home of the city’s most famous son, one Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We also recommend our favourite places to pause for Kaffee und Kuchen – such as the 300-year-old Café Tomaselli, a Viennese-style coffee house.

  • Snowshoeing, horse-drawn sleigh rides & more

    Snowshoeing
    Snowshoeing is a fun and exciting way to explore the wintry landscapes surrounding Fuschl. There are a number of marked trails in the area and equipment can be hired locally. Guided tours are also available.

    Horse-drawn sleigh rides
    For an activity that’s perfectly in keeping with Fuschl’s tranquil charm, choose a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow. Sleigh rides can be organised through your hotel, and begin in the nearby village of Faistenau.

    Tobogganing
    The thrill of whizzing down the mountainside in a toboggan is hard to beat. Simply hire your toboggan from Fuschlseebad – the health club situated a couple of minutes’ walk from the hotel – and take your pick of the area’s runs.

    Ice-skating
    Fuschlseebad also rents out ice skates for use on the village ice rink; this is a natural rink and ice conditions are very much dependent on the weather. When temperatures are sufficiently low, it is sometimes even possible to skate on the lake itself!

    Cross-country skiing
    Or, if you fancy donning a pair of skis, there are 55 kilometres of cross-country trails around Faistenau.

Where you stay

Set at the head of its eponymous lake, Fuschl (670m) is a charming village which deservedly attracts many visitors during the summer months, but is blissfully quiet under a blanket of snow. There are just a handful of cafés open over winter, along with a small supermarket and the tourist office.

Please note: most beds in Austrian hotels are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. We refer to these as 'Austrian Twins' and they are locally regarded to serve requests for both double and twin bedded rooms. Separate twin beds or traditional double beds with one large mattress are rare and cannot be guaranteed.

    I loved this holiday and was very pleased to have added an extra day. The walk around the lake and the walk from Strobl to St Gilgen were very well covered by the Inntravel directions and very scenic even on some overcast weather days. I enjoyed experiencing this lovely region in its quieter season, always found somewhere to have coffee and strudel, and felt very safe out walking on my own. I'm a cold water swimmer at home so I had a couple of quick dips in the lake which was easily accessible from the hotel swimming pool. I spent my last day at the winterparke at Postalm (as there was no snow in the valley) where I hired kit to do some cross ski & spent a lovely sunny few hours enjoying the mountain scenery and a nice lunch.  (For the winter park trip my tips would be to do this in high winter season (to end of Feb) when there is a shuttle service between Strobl and the park. Unless experienced I would also recommend to take a lesson for the cross ski as even the simpler trails had some challenging sections.) It was lovely to be at the hotel where the rooms, food and views were superb. The staff were very nice and very willing to help out with planning trips or anything else. All in all a fabulous and varied time.

    Everything was as expected and mostly better! We were lucky with the weather which certainly made a huge difference - blue skies every day.

    We loved the Hotel Seerose family atmosphere, location, rooms and food. Really looked forward to dinner every evening and breakfast was excellent too.

    We enjoyed our night in Salzburg too. Very central and nice hotel, good value we thought.

    Fuschl was a lovely place to visit and Hotel Seerose very comfortable with friendly staff and good food. But anyone going during the winter months should be aware that the village is almost completely closed and therefore there is nothing to do during the evenings or anywhere to go. Also the rigidity of the seating plan felt at times to be respective and unnecessary. The hotel described games etc that are available but many of them are not in good condition. I'm our opinion 4 nights at this hotel during the winter season is sufficient though there are plenty of walks available in the area.

    Would recommend both Inntravel and the Seerose at Fuschl very highly. This was a covid delayed trip and Inntravel were very helpful all the way through the process. The hotel Seerose was excellent on all counts, the welcome was very warm and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The room was lovely with a fantastic view and the food was superb all of the time. We used the swimming pool and sauna and fitness room, again, all spotless and well equipped, we would definitely visit them again. Also a good location for the lakes, we used the bus to get into Salzburg as well all very straightforward. We have already booked our next holiday through Inntravel!

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

    Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

    When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Austria, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

    Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • (Austrian) German is the most commonly spoken language. The currency is the Euro. Austrian time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.
