An early spring meant we had an enjoyable walking (instead of snowshoeing) holiday, able to access the summer trails and enjoy the snowdrops, crocuses, cowslips, celandines and violets in the meadows and at the edge of the paths. There was also birdsong to cheer us and plenty of evidence of beaver activity along the streams and at the edge of lakes. The tourist office provides free guidebooks to a range of different walking trails in Pillerseetal with starting points in the various villages. The route descriptions also include an adequate map and guidance as to the access points and refreshment opportunities. It was definitely worth taking a swimming costume, the outdoor pool at the Kitzspitz was delightful and definitely warm enough for outdoor swimming in March.
We were amazed to see striking evidence of beaver activity - dams and trees felled by gnawing along one of the beautiful clear streams near St Ulrich. For people interested in wild flowers a treat was the number of beautiful blue Hepatica flowers emerging from the damp leaves and moss along the forest track leading back to Waidring from Strub. There were also on the same path many clumps of white hellebores.
Two very pleasant lunch venues were the Seewirt restaurant in St Ulrich and the venerable Gasthof at Strub.
A very enjoyable holiday. The Kitzspitz hotel is very good, the food is excellent and the staff are very friendly. Unfortuntely, the local cross-country ski trails in St Jakob were in poor condition because of the warm weather. Those in Hochfilzen were much better. Apparently, Hochfilzen has reliable snow conditions hence the location of the International Biathlon Stadium. The walking trails were good and I especially enjoyed the route from Hochfilzen to St Jakob. This is basically Route 5 in the Inntravel information booklet going in the opposite direction and missing out St Ulrich. I notice that Inntravel mentions that the route is mostly on the road. I followed an off-road route which shared the path with a cross country track! This seems to be quite normal as there were a lot of footprints! An advantage of the lack of snow was that it made some of the higher summer hiking routes available, providing spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

This was our second visit for XC skiing at Kitspitz, the first one being pre-pandemic. Inntravel and the Kitzspitz hotel lived up to their usual very high standards.
The Kitzspitz is a family run hotel. If you are looking for the nightlife associated with après-ski, this is not the place for you. But if you like quietness, good food and friendliness, this is a good choice. Children and dog friendly, the children at the time of our visit were very well behaved.
Snow conditions were not ideal for XC, some of the trails near the hotel with gaps in the snow or just ice. But the frequent and free bus service allowed us to venture to areas with better conditions, all less than 30 minutes away.
The area is good for the beginner/intermediate XC ski-touring. For those who are looking for greater exertion, the trails also allow for skating style and the biathlon area up at Hochfilzen is ideal for serious training.
An excellent holiday with very good accommodation and a wide range of things to do. The trail L11 was a particular highlight: I took the bus to Hochfilzen and did it in the opposite direction to the suggestion - and I think there was more downhill that way. It was very easy to link the trails together and, although retreating snow restricted some outings, the winter wanderwegs were a pleasure to follow on foot as an alternative. The hotel wellness area is very well set up, and relaxing in the rest room, watching the sunset whilst the open fire gently crackled, was a particular delight on several afternoons.
Beautiful setting - overall very well appointed hotel. It is very much a family hotel with a lot more children than on our previous stays.
The whole holiday was brilliant so it's hard to list personal highlights. One thing we always pack is our own supply of English breakfast tea bags.
Winter walks were plentiful, and the free bus enabled one to make linear walks rather than just a circular walk. The bus service was also pretty frequent - every 30 mins or so in either direction.
The amazing cross at Jakobskreuz was a highlight of the week, especially as we enjoyed sun and blue sky for it. You should, however mention the delightful, peaceful little chapel which has recently been added, below the ground floor, which many seem to miss. We had very good walking, despite the problems mentioned above. The St Ulrich to Hochfilzen walk, which you mention is indeed a very lovely walk, starting from the hotel, rather than St.Ulrich. The winter walking paths do not seem to be prepared, but at no point was it hard to follow where to go. Traffic was very limited and made for easy walking, though on much of the route there was an alternative to the road.
Despite the poor snow this holiday exceeded our expectations. The hotel is in a great location, close to ski hire, ski school and the free local buses. The room was warm and comfortable and meals were of excellent quality. The outdoor pool in the snow was a really magical experience (even if not environmentally sound!) Transport arrangements worked well, as did the efficient ski hire and the lesson we had pre-booked.
The Kitzspitz is an excellent hotel with wonderful facilities. We particularly enjoyed the indoor/outdoor pool and the spa. We also really enjoyed the skiing at nearby Waidring and Fieberbrunn. The numerous Covid QR code checks at the ski lifts and the mountain restaurants made us feel really safe. It was our first holiday outside the UK for 2 years and we had a marvellous time.
