Holiday information

A winter holiday in St Jakob, Tyrol,

for skiers and non-skiers
To the south of Salzburg, the Kitzbühler Alps in the Tyrol have long attracted the world’s leading winter sports enthusiasts to some of Austria’s finest domains. Yet, right in the heart of this region lies the tranquil and secluded valley of Pillerseetal, very much on the ‘quiet side of the mountain’.
St Jakob im Haus is one of five villages here, framed by forested hills and high peaks. It feels a long way from the hustle and bustle of nearby Kitzbühel and, as well as being the sunniest village in the Tyrol, offers an unhurried pace of life and a wide variety of ways to enjoy the snow – in addition to the plentiful cross-country skiing and winter walking options, visitors can try their hand at snowshoeing, downhill skiing and tobogganing, or even explore the idyllic wintry scenery in a horse-drawn sleigh.

All activities are easily accessed from the Kitzspitz, a superb Nature Hotel with first-rate spa facilities run by the wonderfully welcoming Nothegger family.

Our expert says

“It’s unusual for a hotel to have so much on its doorstep! Cross-country and winter walking trails lead from the Kitzspitz’s main entrance, while the downhill skiing is just to the rear.”

Winter activities

There’s no fixed itinerary, so take your pick of the activities as the mood takes you.
  • 110km in the Pillerseetal region; best suited to beginners & intermediates
One of five villages which make up the World Cup region of Pillerseetal, St Jakob is blessed with a plentiful supply of cross-country trails – which start virtually from your hotel door. These trails link into the wider regional network, across which bus travel is free of charge with your visitor’s card. A trail pass is required to access the trails.

Those around St Jakob, and the neighbouring village of St Ulrich, are relatively easy, criss-crossing meadows and passing through the woodland that surrounds both villages. For more challenging options, it is best to catch the bus to nearby Hochfilzen, a regular host of World Cup events. Here are some of our favourite options:

    Around St Jakob, ‘Sonnenloipe’: 4km
This ‘sunny trail’ is an undulating route which offers lovely views of the surrounding mountain ranges – including the imposing 1,996-metre-high Kitzbüheler Horn – as it passes along the valley floor to Moosbach.

    St Ulrich loop: 8km
Accessed by free, local bus, this relatively flat option is surprisingly varied: it crosses two rivers; enjoys a very peaceful section amid woodland; and meanders through the hamlets of Schwendt, Au and Neuwieben before reaching St Ulrich.

    Hochfilzen Pass-Griessen: 9.5km
Also accessed by bus, this route rises and falls as it heads across the state border into the province of Salzburg. For a shorter day, simply turn around whenever you wish to return to Hochfilzen; otherwise, the full route continues to Griessen and also includes a loop beyond the village.

  • 100km in the Pillerseetal region
Nestled in a quiet valley, and framed by forested hills and high peaks, St Jakob has access to a good network of winter walking trails. A number of these lie just a few steps from your hotel; others can be reached using the regular local bus service (free of charge with your visitor’s card).

All trails are well signed, and the snow specially flattened to facilitate walking. In the detailed documentation we provide, we give an overview of our four favourite options, including the following two routes:

    St Ulrich-Pillersee-Adolari: 5km
This beautiful route commences in the neighbouring village of St Ulrich, from where it leads first alongside the Grieselbach river, and then to the eastern shore of Lake Piller. On reaching the head of the lake, choose either to retrace your steps or to continue to Adolari, where you’ll find a restaurant and a 15th-century pilgrimage church dedicated to St Adolari.

    Fieberbrunn to Tennalm: 3km
Having caught the bus to Fieberbrunn, you follow a quiet road up to the Tennalm mountain inn. Situated at an altitude of 1030 metres, this restaurant offers a splendid backdrop against which to enjoy dishes of traditional Tyrolean fare.
    Tranquil Lake Piller
  • Snowshoeing, downhill skiing & more
With a weekly programme of activities organised by the local tourist office, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the snow in this pretty valley.

    Snowshoeing
Getting to grips with snowshoeing is easy – as soon as you are comfortable with walking in the wide shoes, you are ready to step off the beaten track and explore St Jakob’s silent, unspoiled landscapes. We include one guided snowshoe hike (with equipment provided) for all holidays commencing between 3-17 March 2024.

    Downhill skiing
Downhill skiers of all levels will enjoy St Jakob’s slopes: the small ski area just behind the hotel offers 22 kilometres of pistes and is ideal for beginners and intermediates; while the larger domains of Waidring and Fieberbrunn – situated at opposing ends of the valley – both have a good choice of pistes for all abilities and are only a short bus ride away. Fieberbrunn, at the southern end, is linked to the extensive Saalbach Hinterglemm Ski Circus with over 270 kilometres of slopes.

    Tobogganing
Borrow a toboggan free of charge from the hotel and try out the local run! St Jakob’s 1.5-kilometre run is open daily and is located half an hour’s walk from the Kitzspitz; at the bottom, you’ll find the Kröpflstüberl restaurant – ideal for refuelling after your ride.

    Horse-drawn sleigh rides
Or, for something more sedate, why not explore the snowy scenery by horse-drawn sleigh? Your hotel is able to organise good-value sleigh rides through the Pillersee Valley, starting from the Strasserwirt riding school in St Ulrich.

  • Enjoy the views from Jakobskreuz
Even if you have no plans to downhill ski, be sure to ride the chairlift to the summit of the Buchensteinwand mountain, located just behind the hotel. At 1,456 metres high, this may not be the highest peak in the area, but it is home to Jakobskreuz (Jakob’s Cross) – a hugely distinctive, 30-metre high building in the shape of a cross. While the building was designed primarily as a meeting space, most visitors come to admire the spectacular, 360-degree views from the various viewing platforms, and to enjoy a relaxing lunch or delicious apple strudel in the neighbouring restaurant.
    Jakobskreuz
    Spectacular views
  • Special events
Christmas Eve is celebrated with traditional singing as well as a special gala dinner. On New Year's Eve, a gala dinner is followed by a midnight buffet, and fireworks in the village.

Where you stay

Attractive St Jakob in Haus is one of five villages which shelter in the valley of Pillerseetal, an all-year-round holiday region in the far north-east of the Tyrol.

The village (altitude: 856m) is quite small, with just a small supermarket, a bank with an ATM, a post office and a couple of cafés. A wider choice of shops, cafés and restaurants can be found in neighbouring Fieberbrunn, just five minutes away on the ski bus.

Please note: most beds in Austrian hotels are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. We refer to these as 'Austrian Twins' and they are locally regarded to serve requests for both double and twin bedded rooms. Separate twin beds or traditional double beds with one large mattress are rare and cannot be guaranteed.

This list of alternative flight options should be used as a guide only, and you should check each airline’s website for current routes, frequency and schedules. Not all flights operate daily, and may not run for the entire season. You should also heed the latest flight arrival time and earliest flight departure time stated above, as it may not be possible to arrange connecting travel outside these times. Our expert reservations team will be happy to offer advice if you would prefer to fly via a different route to the one included in our standard arrangements. A supplement may be payable for other flights.

  • Choose a leisurely route on Austria’s NightJet sleeper train. Leaving London late morning on a Friday, you can reach Austria with just one change of train in Amsterdam. Enjoy dinner in this vibrant city before boarding the sleeper, then wake up refreshed in the Austrian Tyrol. Look out for an impressive medieval hill-top fortress to the left of the train as you approach Kufstein station, where you alight for a transfer to the hotel.

On weekends when the direct London–Amsterdam Eurostar is not running, you can take a route via Brussels to Cologne, where you can have dinner by the Rhine before joining the sleeper.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Austria, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
