A walking holiday on the Canary Islands

Any archipelago is worthy of thorough exploration, and this is certainly true of the Canaries. The islands’ spectacular landscapes have been created by volcanic activity over many millennia, and their benevolent climate is strongly influenced by their proximity to the vast continent of Africa. Each island has its own character, flavour and atmosphere, making it a worthy destination in its own right; but by combining two, three or even four of the islands you can experience their striking diversity and gain a wider, more rewarding perspective.
This two-week adventure explores three of the best, beginning on the spectacular island of Gran Canaria, where rugged ridges and deep ravines radiate out from the mountainous centre to the coast. The panoramic views stretch some 70 miles to the towering peak of El Teide on Tenerife, your next destination. With expanses of black sand, green pine forests, red rock formations, crimson lava fields and white clouds which sometimes billow like a skirt around the waist of El Teide, Tenerife is an island of many different colours. The walking here is immensely rewarding, as it is on La Gomera, your final island. From the peak of Garajonay, mountains alternate with lush green valleys down to the coast of steep cliffs and a glittering blue sea, ancient tropical forests and groves of palm trees lending a special enchantment to this pretty island.

Itinerary

    As your first night's accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of walking.
  • Choice of walks from Cruz de Tejeda: 8.5km or 14km

    Circular walk via Artenara: 14km, 6hrs; ascent/descent 765m
    Our recommended option ranks as one of the best on Gran Canaria. Follow a truly stunning ridge above the deep valleys of the dramatic Caldera de Tejeda and the Parque Rural Roque de Nublo. Passing ceremonial caves used by the island's first inhabitants, your path descends through fragrant pine forest to the fascinating cave village of Artenara, the island's highest settlement. Once there you can see what cave living is like by visiting the cave museum; enjoy more breathtaking vistas from the village's balcony location on the lip of the caldera; and visit a chapel entirely carved into a cave – pulpit included. You can halve the distance shown above by returning to the Parador by taxi (pay locally).

    Circular walk via Tejeda: 8.5km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 640m
    Alternatively, you may choose to descend the panoramic Tejeda Valley, where emblematic Roque Bentayga stands guard, flanked by Roque Nublo on the ridge and Mount Teide on the horizon. Your target is Tejeda, one of Gran Canaria's most picturesque villages. Explore its cobbled streets and leafy plazas with views down the valley; try some of its famous almond cakes from the bakery; or visit one of its museums which include a medicinal plants centre. Again, you can halve the distance by returning to the Parador by taxi (pay locally).

  • Cruz de Tejeda to Fontanales: 15km, 6hrs; ascent 675m/descent 1190m
    Your route out of Cruz de Tejeda takes you above the Las Cumbres Protected Area with its splendid views down to the coast and Las Palmas, before descending gently to a peaceful valley with a babbling brook. Passing through rural hamlets, you briefly follow a trail of ancient lavaderos where people would wash their laundry, before reaching the mighty Barranco de la Virgen, whose flank you descend. Your final ascent takes you to a ridge from where you descend gently through meadows filled with the sound of goat and sheep bells, into the village of Fontanales and the welcoming Cabañas Valle Verde.

  • Fontanales to Agaete: 14.5km, 6hrs; ascent 675m/descent 1520m
    After an initial ascent along the ridge above Fontanales, today's route takes in some of Gran Canaria's most diverse landscapes, from rolling green meadows reminiscent of England to the prehistoric surroundings of the Barranco de Agaete with its cascades of water, old laundry basins and breathtaking views. As you descend through the Agaete Valley towards the delightful Hotel Las Longueras, your final hotel on Gran Canaria, you catch glimpses of the sea in the distance.

  • Choice of routes from Agaete: 5.5km to 14km
    You could spend today relaxing by the pool or on the flower-bedecked terrace, but we suggest three options if you would prefer to walk. In each case, pay locally if you choose to return by taxi.

    Montaña Bibique & Puerto de las Nieves walk: 14km, 5hrs; shorter option returning by taxi: 10.5km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 325m
    Promising the satisfaction of reaching the sea after your previous days' exploration of the interior, this route takes you up the slopes of Montaña Bibique, passing below the Caves of the Ancients where Gran Canaria's first known inhabitants lived as troglodytes. The views from the ridge are spectacular. You then follow the cliff-top path that leads down into pretty Puerto de las Nieves where a selection of traditional restaurants offer fresh fish and seafood for a well-deserved lunch. Walk back along a quiet path through the valley, or return by taxi.
     
    Agaete & Puerto de Las Nieves walk: 14km, 3hrs; shorter option returning by taxi: 5.5km, 2hrs; ascent/descent 690m
    Promising an easier route to seaside Puerto de las Nieves than our first suggestion, this walk rises to a ridge above the valley to the north, then descends to Agaete, where you could vist the small botanical garden and the fascinating 1,300-year-old Maipés Necropolis. Return on foot via a quiet valley path, or take a taxi.

    Tamadaba reservoirs walk: 9km, 4hrs; longer option returning on foot: 14km, 6hrs; ascent/descent 700m
    This recommended walk shows a very different but equally dramatic face to this diverse island. After a short taxi ride, you ascend into the splendid Tamadaba Natural Park from where you gaze down through the pine trees over two of the island's most spectacular reservoirs before descending to circumnavigate the lower lake and enjoy a picnic lunch by its shoreline. You can choose to take a taxi back, or to return on foot.

  • Travel to Vilaflor on Tenerife
    You are ideally placed to catch the morning ferry from Agaete to the port of Santa Cruz on Tenerife (60-80mins), where your hire car will be waiting. It is an easy drive to Vilaflor (1hr 15mins) and the Spa Hotel Villalba, where you stay for two nights. However, there is no rush and your hire car gives you the freedom to explore for the rest of the day, perhaps visiting the capital, Santa Cruz, before heading off to Vilaflor; or to relax on the Playa de las Teresitas, widely considered to be Tenerife's most beautiful beach.
  • Choice of routes from Vilaflor: 4.5km to 14km
    We provide notes for two walks from the door, plus two further walks close to Mount Teide, a short drive away. Alternatively, you can ascend Spain's highest peak by cable car, weather permitting.

    Paisaje Lunar: 7.5km, 3hrs; ascent/descent 340m
    Accessed by a short drive, this classic Tenerife walk ascends along the 'Camino de Chasna', which was used extensively in the 17th and 18th centuries by explorers, scientists and well-heeled Victorians over-wintering on Tenerife on the advice of their physicians. Climbing above the village, you ascend through pine forest to the surreal rock formations of Paisaje Lunar (lunar landscape) where, over half a million years, the elements have sculpted fantastical shapes from volcanic fallout to create a unique and fascinating landscape. Return to your hotel by car.
     
    Vilaflor Wine Route: 14km, 6hrs; shorter option: 11km, 5hrs; ascent/descent 510m
    This second option combines pleasant woodland walking with an opportunity to try some of the Hotel Villalba's award-winning wines. Trails through the pine forest lead to Vilaflor's wine country, where you traverse country lanes lined with vineyards and, in early spring, almond blossom.The full route brings you to the Bodega Reverón, where you can take a tour before trying a selection of wines which are also available to buy.

    Roques de Garcia: 4.5km, 1.5hrs; ascent/descent 220m
    Beginning with a short drive, this easy route takes you through the lunar landscapes of the Cañadas at the foot of Mount Teide. You pass many curious rock formations, including the 'Finger of God', as the path crosses scrubland, lava flows and azure-coloured rocks.

    Mount Guajara: 10km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 680m
    This challenging option leads to the peak of Mount Guajara, the highest point of the remaining crater wall and site of the world's first high-mountain observatory, and returns along the same route.

    El Teide: 14km, 4.5hrs
    A relatively flat circular route explores the desert-like landscapes of the central caldera, providing excellent views of the mountainous rim, dramatic volcanic lava flows and El Teide itself. In the event of heavy snowfall, which is not uncommon between November and February, the path will be closed. In good weather it is possible to reach the summit of El Teide by taking the cable car to the station beneath the peak. From here, it's a short but exhilarating walk to the top, although you will need to obtain a free permit to access this walk. Permits become available online six months in advance, and are very popular, so we recommend reserving yours as soon as possible.

  • Drive from Vilaflor to Garachico, plus a short walk
    As the drive to the pretty coastal village of Garachico is not long (72km), you could head out on arrival for a short walk – take your pick from the walks recommended for the following day.

  • Choice of routes near Garachico: 8km to15.5km
    The first walk we suggest can be accessed directly from your hotel; the others are all within easy driving distance of Garachico.

    On the lava trail: 8km, 3.5hrs; ascent/descent 520m
    Starting from the hotel door, this route follows the path of the 1706 eruption and takes you high above the town, through the attractive hamlet of San Juan del Reparo and back to Garachico via an ancient path now only used by locals.

    Teno Alto: 10km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 665m
    This circuit is a great introduction to the Teno Mountains, revealing a variety of scenery as it rises from the village of El Palmar to the Tabaiba Pass on a flower-lined path for far-reaching views over the Atlantic. It continues along a rocky ridge before dropping gently onto the Teno Plateau and traversing a lush, terraced valley.

    Circular walk from Los Silos: 15.5km, 7hrs; ascent/descent 1200m
    Another fabulous circuit that climbs from the town of Los Silos following a steep-sided barranco as you pass deserted hamlets and enter pine forests before arriving in the hill town of Erjos. Enjoy refreshments at one of the small bars before descending another dramatic gorge on wide cobbled trails back to your starting point.

  • Travel to Vallehermoso on La Gomera
    Today you need to be in Los Cristianos by lunchtime to catch the early-afternoon ferry to La Gomera. Enjoy a final leisurely drive through Tenerife’s other-worldly volcanic landscapes before leaving your hire car at the port and joining the ferry (which takes between 50-60mins) as a foot passenger. From the port on La Gomera, you will be transferred (60mins) to the Hotel Triana or Hotel Añaterve in Vallehermoso for two nights.
  • Choice of routes from Vallehermoso: 6km to 19km
    There are four different walks to choose from on your day in Vallehermoso:

    Chorros de Epina: 16km, 6hrs; ascent'descent 860m
    This is a great introduction to the landscapes of La Gomera, taking you up through a terraced, palm-clad barranco (ravine) with views back over the valley to Roque Cano, the monolithic rock that presides over Vallehermoso. From here, you continue climbing to the Chorros de Epina, a legendary spot where seven springs meet, before returning via a gentle descent through forest and along an old path with views over the Encantadora Lake and the valley, reaching Vallehermoso along a quiet country lane.

    Around Vallehermoso: 12km, 5hrs; shorter option 10km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 800m
    This challenging walk climbs steeply above the Barranco del Valle with splendid views back across neatly terraced fields of bananas, avocados, lavender, vines, potatoes and other exotic plants, before crossing another barranco to reach the ridge at Santa Clara. You have a choice of return routes, either a steep descent to a beach, or a gentler descent into the valley with great views over the Barranco de la Era Nueva and Roque Cano.

    The Enchantress Lake: 6km, 2.5hrs; ascent/descent 300m
    A gentle route leads up to the Encantadora ('Enchantress') Lake and ascends the crest of Lomo Pelado before a leisurely descent into Vallehermoso.

    Igualero & the Barranco de Erque: 19km, 6.5hrs; ascent 595m/descent 1745m
    This is a challenging yet hugely rewarding walk that begins after a taxi ride (pay locally) to Igualero. From here you embark upon a lovely, varied walk starting above the deepest and most remote canyon on the island, Barranco de Erque. You pass through a number of hamlets, each with its own watering hole to help you on your way, followed by ancient laurel forest (laurisilva), and finally a cultivated, flowery valley, before dropping back down into Vallehermoso. You can shorten the walk by starting at one of the intervening villages.

  • Vallehermoso to Hermigua: 16.5km, 6.5hrs; ascent 910/descent 985m
    Leaving Vallehermoso, your path ascends above the valley, with views that grow ever more impressive as you gain height, to the base of iconic Roque El Cano. From a tranquil lake in a beautiful valley setting, the route ascends again to the Juego de Bolas visitor centre with its handicrafts and botanical garden before dropping down to the village of Hermigua, where you spend one night at the Casa los Herrera.

    Vallehermoso to Agulo: 12.5km, 5hrs; ascent 800m/descent 775m
    If you are staying at Casa los Helechos, you have a slightly shorter day as Agulo is located before Hermigua.

  • Hermigua to San Sebastián: 9.5km, 3.5hrs; ascent 430m/descent 790m
    After a taxi transfer (included), you set off along well-waymarked paths, steadily climbing to reach the broad, undulating ridge of Lomo de las Nieves, dotted with cacti, which you follow towards the sea. You will be rewarded with fine views of the south-east of La Gomera, initially, and then across to majestic El Teide, crowning the distant island of Tenerife, as you continue down to the coast at San Sebastián. Your final two nights are spent at the Parador where you can relax by the pool and enjoy excellent local cuisine.

  • Out-and-back walk to Playa de la Guancha: 10km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 490m
    If you can tear yourselves away from the hotel pool, this final walk on the island ascends out of San Sebastián and rounds the headland before descending into a barranco. As you emerge once more from the ravine, your efforts are rewarded by panoramic views over the remote Playa de la Guancha, your destination. Relax awhile on its pebbly beach before retracing your steps back to the parador.

    An outstanding trip, with impeccacble details provided by Inntravel from the first start of communication planning the trip, all the way through to the end. We had many driver pick ups and drop offs that had to be coordinated, from airports, to hotels, to ferries, evening drives to town for dinner. All flawless, on time, excellent drivers and very personable. Mid trip, 2 ferries had changed their schedule, we were notified, Inntravel made the changes and rescheduled the drivers. All worked perfect. Most of accommodations were better than expected. Views, spas, great restaurants. Hiking was very unique to much of the world, within one day you cover many different terrain. Some hikes are challenging, but set out early and take your time, well worth it. Always have plenty of water, some hikes through the mountains, you never hit villages. The accomomdations are so great, it is nice to get back in good time to enjoy it, swimmimg pools, the villages. We cannot say enough about how fabulous Inntravel was, we are seasoned travellers around the world and Inntravel surpassed our expectations.     Excellent walking holiday in the Canary Islands. The walks are suitably challenging, but rewarding. The accommodation was superb. Inntravel did a great job of organising everything.

    We really enjoyed this trip. Visiting three different islands made it so interesting due to the varied landscapes and vegetation on each one. All the arrangements worked very well and the accomodation was all good. We enjoyed having the option for rest days after the long walks to Ageate and San Sebastian and in Garachico which we thought was a lovely town with easy and safe swimming from the beach or the natural rockpools. The gorge climb down to Agaete is well worth doing to avoid more road walking but it is very slippery due to loose rocks so take great care. We loved the Villalba Hotel which has a great situation close to El Tiede. The two nights at the end in the Parador was a real treat - such a lovely position and a great pool area to relax in.

    Overall the highlights are knowing that everything is taken care of with Inntravel and the walking notes are excellent. Small details given that reassure you after a junction show that the writers really know the walk well, and the gpx files were excellent reassurance that we were on the right track.

    We loved the diversity of the holiday and the challenge of the walking. It was fabulous to be in the Canarian wilderness and hardly see any other walkers. The scenery was breath taking. Both paradors and Hotel Villalba were wonderful and we really appreciated the spa facilitates at Villalba.

    The scenery was stunning; the walks were along demanding but most interesting terrain; the hotels were unique and charming; the luggage transfers were seamless; and the meals provided were tasty and more than ample. The four of us had a great time together! This is our second Inntravel walking itinerary and already we're talking about doing another in the future.

    What an amazing trip that was! The temperature was just right for us and we were also lucky not to have had any rain at all for our stay. Much variation in terrain across the 3 islands with the best saved for last with the spectacular La Gomera. The walking, though hard was rewarding with another incredible view waiting for you after each ascent. The toughest parts we found were often the final descents having been hiking for 4 or 5 hours and negotiating a steep slippy stone path for an hour was tricky at times. Although waiting for you at the end was a cold drink and a new hotel with your bags waiting for you.

     

    We loved the variation. For us, the holiday was a perfect balance of independent travel organised enough so everything just works. Be it transfers, hotels, picnics, ferry's etc. We particularly enjoyed the smaller, traditional hotels with Hotel Rural La Quinta Roja being really special. As always the locations, walking routes, accomodation was varied and really enjoyable.  We found the food in the islands surpsingly bland but filling and functional. Certainly enough carbs to keep you going, but don't expect haute cuisine!

    Overall an incredible 2 weeks we hiked a total of 155.7k, ascended 4.7k (half-way up Everest) We stayed in 8 hotels, took 3 ferries, hired 1 car and took 9 taxis. We returned with over 1,000 photgraphs and lots of amazing memories.

    Fantastic choices of hotels, all transfers and other arrangements were perfect. Really good choice of routes, however some signs and junctions were simply not there, but we did manage, however the routes need perhaps a more regular check.

    The weather was very wet for our time on Gran Canaria, which meant we didn't enjoy the walks that much. On La Gomera it was again poor, cloudy and very windy, which detracted from the high-level walks. On Tenerife we seemed to have much better weather and the walks were much more enjoyable. We had taken everything from full waterproofs to T-shirts and shorts, and we used it all at one time or another. Walking poles are essential.

    It was difficult to find vegetarian menu choices at the paradors and bigger hotels, particularly for a second or third night. The exception was Hotel Villalba which had a good range of vegetarian and vegan options. At the other, smaller hotels they managed to provide vegetarian meals for us, or we could eat out and make our own choices. We did eat a lot of eggs and cheese and I think vegans would really struggle.

    As two fairly fit seventy year olds, we thoroughly enjoyed this walking holiday. Inntravel’s organisation of routes, hotels, car hire, ferries and taxis was commendable. That is not to say there wasn’t the occasional problem. Examples we faced included - not being met and having to search for our taxi on arrival at Las Palmas airport! Having our ferry voucher rejected at Los Cristianos & having to phone the UK to get it sorted. Seeking alternative walking routes on two stretches of exceptionally dangerous terrain. And experiencing the most frightening, uncomfortable drive of our lives in our hire car attempting to follow the suggested route back to return our hire car!

    Despite the above comments the trip was a great success.The walking notes were detailed, accurate & helpful. The walking was more demanding than expected with challenging gradients and difficult underfoot conditions. Both the locations of the hotels and the walks, offered spectacular views & dramatic, unforgettable scenery.

    The hotels were a source of delight - each very different, characterful and of a high standard. All were clean & welcoming with friendly staff and in in great locations. With two of our picnics we were offered innovatory, sustaining, delicious omelettes in our sandwiches. We did not appreciate rubber undersheets at 2 of the hotels causing an uncomfortable overheated sleep! Air conditioning and ceiling fans were much appreciated in several hotels. We found our portable kettle, uht  milk sachets and a variety of tea bags a thirst quenching asset.

    We would use Inntravel again & recommend it to others.

    Further to our direct communication, we’re sorry that you encountered a path closure on Gran Canaria, and also experienced difficulties following the route notes for one of the walks on La Gomera, which led you onto unexpectedly challenging terrain. We’ve made some amends to our route notes as a result, and are grateful to you for letting us know. We’re extremely sorry too that your drive to return your hire car on Tenerife proved uncomfortable and frightening. The recommended route in our holiday notes heads east from Garachico, while we believe the road which caused problems is to the west, and we know it to be winding with steep drops to the side. We’re pleased that, despite these issues, you felt the holiday overall was a great success.

  • We’ll send you route notes and maps 2-3 weeks before your holiday. The route notes not only contain directions to get from A to B, but also include practical information about places of interest and eateries along each route, plus cultural information about the area. If/when you are moving between hotels, you leave your luggage in reception as you leave, and it will be transferred ahead to your next accommodation, meaning that all you need to take with you are a camera, sun cream, drinks, food and waterproofs.

  • Yes, prior to going on holiday you will be able to download GPX tracks so that you can follow your route on your smartphone or dedicated GPS device if you wish. It’s entirely up to you whether or not you use them – our detailed, step-by-step route notes remain the principal means of guiding you from A to B – but we provide them as a secondary means of navigation for additional reassurance when walking.
  • We can book a wide range of routes from the UK with a variety of airlines. As well as being more convenient for you to book all elements of your holiday together, it also means that we’ll accept liability for your travel arrangements, so if things go wrong, such as the airline going bust, we’ll make suitable alternative arrangements for you. The fee for this service is £35 per person (£15 for children aged 2-11). More information on flights >
  • We can’t book flights that originate outside the UK, but if you wanted to book your own flights to London (or elsewhere in the UK), we can make all onward travel arrangements (including flights) from there. Alternatively, if you are booking your own flights to an airport in continental Europe that’s appropriate for your holiday, we can book onward rail travel and/or taxis.   • Since our holidays are self-guided, we recommend calling us for a chat about your plans before making a booking, especially if it’s the first time you’ve booked with us.
    The price panel shows the supplement for a single room and also the single traveller charge (this covers (luggage) transfers and other costs which are usually shared between two people).
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

    Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

    When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Spain, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

    Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • (Castilian) Spanish is one of several official languages; Catalan, Basque and Gallego have equal status in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, respectively. The currency is the Euro. Spanish time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.

  • You are the best judge of your child’s/children’s capabilities. We are happy to take bookings for families of older children/teenagers if they walk regularly, love the outdoors and are comfortable with the distances and ascent/descent involved. Please note that the bedrooms at most of the accommodation we use will normally only sleep a maximum of 3 people, and sometimes only 2.
