Along the Costa Vicentina

Beautiful area, coastal walking, excellent hotels, great food and wine and fautless Inntravel organisation. 

This was our first experience of Portugal and of a walking holiday of this kind and we are so very pleased that we chose Inntravel to organise our trip. The Costa Vicentina is a wonderful walking area, spectacular coastal scenery and very interesting and different types of accommodation providing delicious food and friendly service. There is a lot of sand walking, which could sound daunting, but the scenery more than makes up for the extra effort and the route is straightforward to follow. We were both delighted and surprised to see some nesting storks on the coastal strip near to Odeceixe in early September - a definite highlight of our trip. Would recommend spending a couple of days in Faro. The Old Town is lovely and there are lots of nice restaurants serving great seafood. Would highly recommend this walking holiday to anyone.

We very much enjoyed all the walking and the wonderful clean beaches. The disappointing accommodation for last couple of days and the terrible journey back rather spoiled this holiday.

Another amazing Inntravel holiday, so thoughtfully put together and well organised. Highlights - walking barefoot through the waves along Malhao beach between Vila Nova de Milfontes towards Porto Covo; the coastal scenery, varied vegetation and nesting storks; the walking routes and high quality accommodation; the end of the walk via the bridge - we opted for the bridge route instead of the ferry and enjoyed the view and cool breeze of the bridge crossing; the meals, particularly at Casa Da Seiceira, Herdade do Touril and Tres Marias; the confidence of knowing that Inntravel had everything taken care of. Note that the sections of walking on soft sand are interspersed with paths that are firmer underfoot - and the views always compensated for the effort.

Enjoyable walk with superb coastal scenery, slightly harder work than you might expect because you're often walking on sand. Lots of flowers in April/May. Would strongly recommend an extra night in Milfontes, the only stop that's on the coast. It's a beautiful setting on a river estuary where you can kayak and take boat trips. Has good restaurants, one on a beach with glorious views of sunset. Also enjoyed extra night at Touril; we did a walk to the lighthouse to the north, but also a lovely place to relax. The accommodation is superb throughout. 

After an excellent start at Casa Vincentina we thought the rest of the week would have a lot to live up to. It didn't fail to do so with all the walks being good and the hotels excellent. We had an extra day at Casa do Adro and were really well looked after and think this makes a good break between two long sandy walks. We recommend walking poles for those two days. We added on two nights in Faro, where we stayed at the excellent Lemon Tree Stay, as Inntravel's normal hotel was fully booked. The extra two days were a contrast with the rest of the week, much busier and very different scenery. We used the ferry to the Isla Deserta which was well worth it.

The flowers were absolutely amazing at this time of year - I must have taken thousands of photos!  Also, we we fascinated by the geology and folding of the cliffs. We loved all the people we met and were well cared for and very comfortable.

A really lovely holiday blessed with beautiful weather, fantastic coastal scenery with lots of storks and wild flowers. The hotels were all very good and we enjoyed our stay at each one.

The coastal sections were amazing. The wild flowers were so beautiful! Be prepared for walking in loose sand. It will slow you down considerably.

This was our 3rd Inntravel holiday and again highly recommended. All arrangements very smooth. Despite it being late October we had 3 days of hot sunshine with 2 days with torrential showers and strong winds. Prevailing winds were south westerly so it was predominately behind us. This made the sea magnification! The other days were overcast and pleasantly warm. Cliff views and rock formations were stunning. For us (living in Scotland- so not used too hot weather!) the last couple of days of the coastal walks could have been challenging in the heat with the sun reflecting off sand. Ask for additional water at hotels as there are limited places to buy en route - this was no problem with all hotels happily providing this for no charge or very reasonable charge. Accommodation was lovely - meals were homely and plentiful. Transfer arrangements with taxis were slick and reliable. Even our taxi driver commented on how well organised Inntravel were and a great company to provide their service.

This trip is best for nature walking and bird/flora watching.  The hiking is not generally hard, but much of it is in sand and takes a good deal of effort, and in some spots goes along the edge of sheer cliffs, which may be uncomfortable if one doesn't like heights.  The ocean and beaches are beautiful and the lodgings well chosen.

This is an excellent holiday with beautiful coastal walking and lovely hotels. The organisation by Inntravel was excellent with the transfers and walking routes. It was a good balance between walking with still plenty of time to relax by the hotel pools in the afternoon.

Once again Inntravel made our holiday worry free.  We knew the choice of accommodation and food would be excellent and were not disappointed.  Transfers were reliable.  The walking routes were easy to follow and views were gorgeous.  Another lovely holiday.

The whole area was quiet which led to a very relaxed holiday, helped by most accomodations being 'out of town'. The service levels and friendliness of all hosts was excellent. We appreciated and made good use of the swimming pools at all but Casa do Adro but we found the breakfast on the terrace there to be a real highlight, particularly the spectacular arrangement of fruit. We enjoyed listening to the frogs in the evenings at Casa Vicentina and Casa da Seiceira and the mixed flora and scents along the coast path which were strongest along the first few sections.

The holiday was super and the instructions very clear. Although given it was a coastal walk we always knew which side the coast should be on as a reference point! The amount of walking per day was just about right and achievable with breaks along the way. The addition of Faro and Lisbon at either end was good.

One of our favourite holidays, great walking, plenty of flora and fauna interest, fantastic coastal views, superb food and accommodation. We would highly recommend this trip.

This was my first walking holiday since retiring and to be honest my first ever walking holiday so I was slightly nervous.

While I found some of the walks quite challenging I absolutely loved the clifftop flora, views and waves from the path. The entire walk was peaceful, stunning and full of wildlife. We even heard nightingales!

I also found the variation between hotels, food and walks were an interesting insight to Portuguese life too.

This walk takes you along a spectacular coastline with wonderful views, beautiful beaches and a multitude of flowers. Seeing nesting sea storks was very special. The official route does involve some road walking and walking in loose sand can be demanding. The path is well used by walkers, but having relatively few access points by road is not overcrowded. All the hotels were different but of a high standard. We ate well everywhere, but especially at Tres Marias.

Beautiful coastal scenery on every walk. Nesting storks did not disappoint. Be prepared to make slow progress in deep sand.

It was a lovely walk with lovely accommodation, well up to Inntravel standards. Walking on sand proved to be a little more taxing than we expected but this was only really noticeable on the 20km walk and we were always on or ahead of the walk timings (interesting that the man in the ferry to Milfontes asked if we were walking on to Porto Covo and told us it would take a long time because of the sand). We think this is a great walk for people who enjoy the natural world and that this aspect is maybe a little undersold in the brochure/website. The richness and variety of flowers and birds (and birdsong in particular) was amazing and it might have been helpful to have some help with identification - though we enjoyed looking things up for ourselves. 

Our first walking holiday & first time with Inntravel. Overall the walking was a bit easier than we expected, except on the last day which was the longest & had most soft sand walking. Coastal scenery was beautiful & we saw plenty of nesting storks. Weather perfect for walking. We were impressed with all the accommodation & was good to have a variety of places. Our favourite was Herdade de Touril - best food & the warmest pool! All the arrangements went smoothly. Thanks Inntravel.

A wonderful trip, fabulous unspoilt area, great and varied accommodation. We have travelled with Inntravel many times and this was one of our favourites. We added additional nights as suggested and were pleased we did so. We felt boots were advisable due to the sand.

After three attempts at a holiday with Inntravel (family bereavement, then covid!) we finally managed to get away and were not disappointed.  Every element of the holiday was excellent from the varied accommodation, friendly service and meals through to the quality and variety of the walking and outstanding scenery along the Costa Vicentina.  The quality of the walking notes and directions were excellent.  The add on in Lisbon was also a real treat.  Overall, we were very impressed with Inntravel's organisation and attention to detail all of which added up to an excellent holiday.  I know that we will be return customers and are already looking forward to choosing another trip.

HIGHLIGHT: Staying at Herdade do Touril and Tres Marias 

Simply a glorious journey up a most beautiful coastline providing opportunities to appreciate the rich fauna, wildlife and stunning scenery. The old fisherman's trail was a true delight, every section of the walk offering a different perspective and appreciation of this fascination coast, still looking pristine, wild and unspolit. It was a fascination and rewarding trek, and such peace and tranqulity all the way apart from the crashing waves, spectacular cliffs with their storks and other sea birds, and outstanding views.

We thoroughly enjoyed this holiday.

Tips - Might be an idea to include the diversion due to landslip in the notes for anyone not using GPX. There seemed to be a reasonable variety of alternative routes around the Odeciexe area and I would include recommending an extra night at Casa Vicentina. The coloured route markers are excellent.

We loved our time in Portugal on the Costa Vicentino, and adding on 3 nights in Lisbon was a great end to the holiday. We found day 5 rather challenging, too much soft sand, and it was a long day. 

Day 4 ended with us walking over the bridge instead of getting the ferry, which was not operating - we didn't enjoy that at all, maybe a taxi pick-up could be organised from the end of the track into town if the ferry is not working. But overall it was great, and we have already recommended it to friends! Thank you Inntravel.

A brilliantly organised trip with lots of variety in the walking and good accommodation. Even in March the weather was good for walking and the flowers were out along the route. We wouldn't recommend an extra night at Casa Andro, but that may be personal taste. Not all the pools are accessible out of season. Highly recommend the train from Lisbon option - a beautiful route and a relaxing journey.

We would probably have rated this one of our best holidays ever (and we have used Inntravel several times before), apart from the weather which was cooler, cloudier and wetter than is typical for Portugal in March.  We loved the clifftop walks with the variety of plant life and the storks nesting on rock stacks just offshore.  And we also loved the accommodation which was very varied, but always with a warm welcome.

The trip would be better in Spring - more flowers.

Walking notes - at Ilha de Pesseguiera (p73) go past the INLAND side of the fort to reach the car park and restaurant.

page 72 - top bullet point - there is now a SP RV saying "follow track next to dunes, no waymarks"

page 46 - half way down - There is no RV sign to Brejao any more.  The only RV sign is to Zambuiera do mar.6.5 km.  It would be better to say to turn right inland along the lane "directly opposite the blue gate and white wall of the Amalia Rodrigues house.  We missed this turn off and wasted 2 kms.

This was a marvellous holiday. It is difficult to highlight any particular aspect as, unusually, everything - transfers, accommodation, food and the walking itself - was superb. The coastal scenary is fantastic throughout and there are all the other local curiosities one sees on foot. With no hire car to worry about, or, indeed, decisions to be made about anything (including about what we were to eat!), this is probably the most relaxing holiday we have ever had. Wonderful.

Yet another great Inntravel holiday. Stunning coastline and scenery in a beautiful end of season October, and the very detailed walking notes took us along high sand topped cliffs above the Atlantic ( maritime storks!) down to deserted beaches and coves and wild little fishing ports. All the hotels / guest houses were of excellent quality, a special mention for the amazing Caso do Adro, we felt as if we had been welcomed into a very special Portugese home. 4 stars to Tres Marias as well, not only a wonderful setting but Balthazar went out of his way to show us round the ceramic / pottery studios on his land, extremely interesting. Delicious meals throughout the holiday, (Tres Marias especially) and Portugese hospitality really is heart warming. Many thanks Inntravel, another success!
