I think the highlight for us was actually the Hotel du Poete! Two minutes' walk from the village square, it was yet tucked away down its own little valley, shaded by fig and plane trees, surrounded by rushing water on all sides and utterly peaceful. The staff were extremely helpful and although the room was small it was well appointed. Bathrobes and swimming towels are now provided as standard. One useful tip is that the walk from Old Maubec to Oppede le Vieux, though listed as Level 1 - ie easy - was actually quite hard going because of the loose, stony surface of the paths going steeply up and down. We are in our mid-eighties, but reasonably fit, and the outward half of this walk took us 3.5 hours instead of the 1.5 suggested in the walking notes. We were reassured by some much younger and fitter walkers who had done your Level 2 walks with no problem but also found this one quite challenging.
We arrived a night early in Avignon - the two nights at Hotel de L'Horloge were perfect.

The hotel has a fantastic location, really friendly and helpful staff, a great breakfast selection, and excellent food in the evening, a new service (we ate there on two evenings). As a bonus, when we asked if there was anywhere in the area where we could play table tennis (we had brought our bats), the owner produced a brand new table tennis table, recently acquired for guests to use. We had some nice games despite the intense heat. We very much enjoyed exploring the village and the surrounding area.

Hotel comfortable but the excellent quality of all the staff made it memorable, nothing was too much trouble. Because the hotel was under half full while we were there it meant we received exceptional service.

This is a lovely holiday. Access is easy, the hotel is outstanding and many walks are within range. Staying in one place offers a more immersive experience than when on a linear route and we enjoyed getting to know all sorts of people. We particularly enjoyed wonderful food at the restaurant Figuiere. We also loved the pool - and of course the sunshine!
We followed your restaurant recommendations in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and were pleased to do so. However, please note that the 'vying for top spot' restaurant Chez Dominique closed down permanently in 2020! We were unable to find the Lou Fanau restaurant. We note that you recommend the Hotel du Parc restaurant. It looked quite nice, but we didn't try it, having heard of very poor experiences from a couple of fellow guests at the Hotel du Poete.
The hotel is in a beautiful situation. It is also very close to the centre of the village with its central square shaded by plane trees and selection of small restaurants. Just lovely to sit outside by the river and watch the world go by.
For literature buffs, don't miss the Musee de Petrarch. A World's Classics edition of selected poetry and prose with a very useful introduction is available. You can then sit in the museum's garden and feel very culturally informed.
Highlights included the walks from Roussillon and Gordes, visits to Venasque and the Lavender museum. At the end of a hot day's walking, dipping our feet in the icy waters of the Sorge in the mill race at Hotel du Poete as recommended by Tva, one of the staff, was wonderful!
The arena at Nimes was awesome and the outlet of the aqueduct from Uzes was most interesting, especially as we'd done the Pont du Gard holiday in 2018.

The hotel de Poete was exceptional. Magical setting and wonderful friendly, helpful staff.
Fantastic holiday - beautiful hotel in wonderful setting. All round fabulous walking with wonderful villages. Avignon very worthwhile as an add on.
Many think of Provence in terms of sunflowers and lavender which would be much later in the season. Although many facilities only get going at the beginning of May, we found this to be an excellent time for walking before it gets too hot. Especially striking were the wild flowers, blossom, butterflies and birdsong, and all of the routes offer beautiful scenery and panoramic views. The most popular locations (eg Gordes and Rousillon) were crowded and best visited and then left - there are lots of smaller but still picturesque hilltop villages to enjoy. Hotel du Poete as a base could not be faulted.
Waiting for the TGV at Gare de Lyon, we liked the Cafe Paris Lyon for lunch, behind the Novhotel in the Place Henri Frenay.
The guided tour of the Abbey Senanque was excellent, non French speakers can have a 'Histopad' which is brilliant. The Ochre caverns at Roussillon were well worth a visit, L'Isle de la Sorgue is delightful and the doll and toy museum is amazing. Our favourite walk was Maubec to Odepe le Vieux. The model of Versailles in Fontaine de Vaucluse paper mill is the best 1 euro's worth I have had in a long time. We liked La Vanne Marel for an evening meal, Hotel du Parc not so good, Cafe de la Source doesn't have a river view but the food was good. Try the Boulangerie in Fontaine for a picnic lunch, but go early, it seems to run out of stock and close late morning. No ATM in Fontaine now. The hotel gave us a useful map as an overview of the area, we could plan our day without opening up the large road map and searching on it.
We had the French equivalent to the NHS app on our phones and migrated a copy of our Covid certificates to it; this made the checks (for Pass Sanitaire) at bars and restaurants etc very easy. They were checked even if sitting outside in a small village bar-tabac. Mask wearing in indoor venues and on trains was compulsory; on the trains the conductors usually checked masks before returning later to check tickets.
The walks were all very enjoyable and to the grade expected.
Fontaine de Vaucluse is nice but very touristy during the day; it was quieter in the evenings and restaurants appeared to take it in turns to close then. The Hotel du Poete was very pleasant as were the staff. The walks were all straight forward with lovely hilltop villages.
