A walking holiday in the Dordogne Valley to Rocamadour

The picturesque villages and rural landscape of this region have changed little since the end of the Hundred Years’ War in the 15th century. Your path follows the River Dordogne and its pretty tributary, the Ouysse, through forest and gentle green hills, in the shade of soaring cliffs, amidst green copses and golden hay fields. There are no cities and there is virtually no industry – other than the production of wine, walnut oil, truffles and foie gras, all of which you can sample as you progress downriver.
So, by day you can feast your eyes on the glorious landscapes and ever-changing panoramas, and each evening feast on the distinctive, rich gastronomy of south-west France. Your destination is the famed ‘hanging’ village of Rocamadour, the destination of pilgrims since the 12th century. The walks are leisurely, with some short but steep ascents to the limestone plateaux for splendid views over the river and the fairy-tale châteaux that stand sentinel along its banks.

  • Arrival in Beaulieu
    Night 1: at Hotel Les Flots Bleus or Hotel Le Turenne (where you stay one night).
    As your first night’s accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of walking.
  • Choice of walks from Beaulieu to Port de Gagnac: 9km or 12km

    Shorter route: 9km, 3.5hrs; ascent 305m/descent 295m
    You cross the Dordogne via a small island to begin this gentle walk southwards towards the Cère, one of its tributaries. Wide, often shady, paths link a succession of tiny rural hamlets, across traditional farmland and through woodland and forest. On the way you gain glorious views back and forth over the river valleys and villages. In the quiet forest, you may spot deer in a clearing. Your destination is the village of Port de Gagnac and the Auberge du Vieux Port. If availability requires, we can also offer the nearby Hostellerie Belle Rive, which too enjoys a peaceful riverside setting.

    Longer route: 12km, 5hrs; ascent 370m/descent 360m
    This slightly longer route is a delightful ramble along country roads and tracks up onto the agricultural uplands. Ascending continually for the first half of the walk, you rise out of woodland to be rewarded with lovely views and a wonderful sense of openess. The second half of the walk then sees you descend through the interesting hamlet of Fontmerle before dropping through the woods to reach the River Cère and Port de Gagnac.

  • Port de Gagnac to Loubressac: 15km, 6hrs; ascent 420m/descent 350m
    Today’s walk is, in our view, undoubtedly one of the best of the holiday, with sweeping views over splendid countryside. A highlight on the walk is seeing one of France’s most spectacular medieval fortifications, the magnificent Château de Castelnau, on a promontory overlooking four valleys and three rivers. Your path takes you through meadows, between orchards and vineyards, and up steep stony paths through forest. You pass the region’s cheese factory – the Fromagerie de Rocamadour – before reaching Loubressac, a tiny, fortified village perched high on the hillside, with a 15th-century manor house and lovely views back towards the Château de Castelnau. Your hotel for your two nights here is the Relais de Castelnau.

  • Choice of walks from Loubressac: 9.5km or 14.5km

    Gouffre de Padirac option: 14.5km, 5.5hrs; ascent/descent 270m
    Our first option crosses a wild and uninhabited landscape to visit the vast caverns of the Gouffre de Padirac, one of the most impressive cave systems in Europe, where you can take a boat on the underground river. The caves extend for some 20 kilometres, with some caverns 100 metres high. (It is worth booking in advance; pay locally.)

    Circular walk via Autoire: 9.5km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 325m
    Alternatively, enjoy our circular walk along timeless, stone-edged paths and down through a gorge to the picturesque village of Autoire. There are several café-restaurants to offer sustenance before you take the steep route back to Loubressac.

  • Loubressac to Martel: 16km, 6hrs; ascent 415m/descent 320m
    The day begins with a short transfer to the delightful village of Carennac. This is another of the ‘most beautiful villages in France’, perched high above the Dordogne, with immaculately restored manor houses and ornate dovecotes typical of the region, clustering round the old Cluniac priory. After you've explored the village, you set off into a quiet landscape, following footpaths and country lanes often bordered by old dry-stone walls. You pass through the pretty riverside village of Floirac to enter the open valley of the River Dordogne, sheltered on both sides by tall limestone cliffs. At the end of the walk you cross the river to reach the lively medieval market town of Martel and your guesthouse.

  • Circular walk from Martel: 12km, 5hrs; ascent/descent 305m
    The target of this circular walk is Gluges, which you reach via a viewpoint affording a superb view of the River Dordogne. You'll no doubt wish to linger in Gluges, a picturesque village set into overhanging cliffs and with a romantic connection to Edith Piaf. You could even hire a canoe for an hour or two (pay locally) to see the river from a different perspective. When you are ready to return, you head back to Martel along a botanical trail across the limestone plateau that was used by apothecaries of yesteryear. Take time before or after your walk to explore Martel itself, known as ‘the town of seven towers’. Wednesdays and Saturdays are market days.

  • Martel to Meyronne: 12.5km, 5hrs; ascent 360m/descent 490m
    This is a gentle, varied walk over hills, through woods and past farms. Your destination is the pretty riverside village of Meyronne, which enjoys superb views up and down the Dordogne. You stay the night at Hotel La Terrasse.

  • Choice of walks from Meyronne to Lacave: 9.5km or 13.5km

    Linear walk via Le Limon and Mayrinhac: 13.5km, 5hrs; ascent/descent 305m
    For your first day, we recommend you follow this lovely route to Lacave. It explores the area to the south of the river and passes via the attractive hamlets of Le Limon and Mayrinhac le Francal.

    Linear walk via Pech del Raysse: 9.5km, 3.5hrs;ascent/descent 280m
    This shorter option also takes you south of the river, passing through woodland and farmland and leading over the panoramic Pech del Raysse. Your destination is the high-quality Hotel le Pont de l’Ouysse in Lacave, where you spend two nights.

  • Circular walk from Lacave: 11.5km, 4.5hrs; ascent/descent 340m
    There are various options for your day in Lacave. For a relaxing day, visit the village’s impressive caves with their underground lakes, stalactites and stalagmites (pay locally), stroll to the château overlooking the confluence of the Dordogne and the Ouysse, then spend the afternoon relaxing by the hotel pool.

    Our suggested walking route, meanwhile, crosses the river and leads up through woodland to the top of the riverside cliff on the north bank, which you follow for some distance as it ascends and descends, enjoying good views of the valley from the various viewpoints. For a slightly shorter day, opt to take a taxi as far as the campsite at Pinsac, four kilometres into the walk.

  • Lacave to Calès: 10.5km, 4hrs; ascent 265m/descent 110m
    From Lacave, you head south along the idyllic Ouysse Valley. You pass many pleasant spots where you can rest by the river as well as a fortified working mill dating from the 14th century, which you can visit for a fascinating demonstration of milling. The last section takes you up through woodland away from the river and across fields to Calès and Le Petit Relais, where you spend one night.

  • Calès to Hospitalet: 13km, 5hrs; ascent 310m/descent 320m
    Today's walk sees you ascending onto a high ridge between two gorges, as you follow the River Ouysse eastwards. You pass a watermill and several mill ponds where kingfishers can sometimes be spotted, and have the option to take a detour past a viewpoint overlooking the Gouffre de Cabouy, where the Ouysse gushes from underground. On reaching Rocamadour, you can spend some time exploring this fascinating centre of pilgrimage, bearing in mind that you still need to make the steep ascent to Hospitalet! Hospitalet is thus named because it was once the site of a pilgrims’ hospital. Your hotel here, for the final two nights, is the Hotel le Troubadour.

    Circular walk from Hospitalet: 16km, 6hrs; ascent/descent 350m
    For more walking, there is a superb route that takes you across the plateau from the hotel and then along the dramatic Alzou valley to reach a spectacular mill set in the gorge. This is a marvellous scenic walk, with an easy climb to the mill and to the far side of the gorge, returning along the top of the cliff before descending to follow the gorge downstream and return to Rocamadour via a woodland path.

    Alternatively, spend your last day exploring the remarkable 'hanging village' of Rocamadour, which clambers up the hillside. Above the village itself is the ecclesiastical centre, which in turn is crowned by a castle offering a fantastic panorama. It is also worth visiting the Grottes des Merveilles near Hospitalet, where various prehistoric cave paintings have been discovered (pay locally).

    We were blessed with perfect weather every day, surrounded on our walks by endless butterflies. Incredible scenery and views especially 'The Meander above the Dordogne' and the 'Gorge of Alzou Circuit'. Sylvie at Martel, an amazing hostess, so warm and friendly, and La Devinie a gem of a hotel. On Sunday night, the only restaurant open was fully booked, so we bought a takeout pizza and bottle of wine, and Sylvie set the table for us in her garden. Her walnut tart at breakfast was delicious. The evening meal at Le Petit Relais was excellent, as was the breakfast Olivier set out on our table the next morning. It certainly made the detour to Cales worth it. Hotel le Troubadour a fitting end to the walk, out in the countryside, away from busy Rocamadour, and their breakfast feast of meat and cheese freshly delivered by the owner of the charcuterie in Rocamadour on our last morning, was a fitting end to a wonderful holiday. Restaurant Chez Colette in Beaulieu highly recommended. 27 rue du General de Gaulle.

    We traveled in late September, and the weather was very warm. The combination of forest, orchards and vineyards was lovely, and some of the steep climbs were extra challenging for us (Loubressac!). We especially loved the Pont de L'Ouysse hotel and its situation on the river--really beautiful, and a welcome 2 night's stopover. Like other reviewers, we could have done without the climb to Cales. Rocamadour is amazing, a bit on the touristy side, and we were delighted to stay a few minutes away at the Troubadour, out of the tourist zone.

    A completely lovely holiday - beautiful scenery, excellent hotels, very good food - even for a couple like us who do not eat meat! Such smooth organisation - and it was fantastic to get the train there and not have to fly.  Highly recommended.

    The abundance of butterflies and bird song in conjunction with the wild flowers was fabulous, certainly compared with the uk these days. Be ultra careful on the Paris metro.

    Suggested walk to Autoire was spectacular! All hotel staff were excellent, especially Le Petit Moulin and the Troubadour.

    We loved this walk with its variety of woodland, rivers, gorges and medieval villages (though we would have been happy to miss Calès). Both in our mid-seventies, we were pleased to find it was well within our capabilities. The walking notes were excellent, and it was useful to have the GPS version of the trail as a backup. We chose to kayak on day 8, rather than walking around Lacave, and enjoyed seeing the gorges from a different perspective. Most of the hotels were excellent, with great food, and the pools were extremely welcome in the unexpected heat! Thank you.

    Fantastic holiday, so well organised, lovely places to visit. Everything went without a hitch. Pont de l'Ouysse was really special but (almost) everywhere had something good to offer. Skip Cales and it would be perfect!

    Highlight were the experience of walking in the oak woods - wonderful sightings of beautiful butterflies, constant cuckoo calls and very pretty hedgerows with lots of orchids. Great to emerge to views of the escarpments and beautiful river. Ice cream from the kiosk at Loubressac village green - just when you thought you couldn't go another step!

    We loved this holiday. The scenery was gorgeous, the accommodations were quite varied and the people were lovely.  Everything went very smoothly and the weather really cooperated.  We really enjoyed this part of France and were glad we went this time of year.

  • We’ll send you route notes and maps 2-3 weeks before your holiday. The route notes not only contain directions to get from A to B, but also include practical information about places of interest and eateries along each route, plus cultural information about the area. If/when you are moving between hotels, you leave your luggage in reception as you leave, and it will be transferred ahead to your next accommodation, meaning that all you need to take with you are a camera, sun cream, drinks, food and waterproofs.

  • Yes, prior to going on holiday you will be able to download GPX tracks so that you can follow your route on your smartphone or dedicated GPS device if you wish. It’s entirely up to you whether or not you use them – our detailed, step-by-step route notes remain the principal means of guiding you from A to B – but we provide them as a secondary means of navigation for additional reassurance when walking.
  • We can book a wide range of routes from the UK with a variety of airlines. As well as being more convenient for you to book all elements of your holiday together, it also means that we’ll accept liability for your travel arrangements, so if things go wrong, such as the airline going bust, we’ll make suitable alternative arrangements for you. The fee for this service is £35 per person (£15 for children aged 2-11). More information on flights >
  • We can’t book flights that originate outside the UK, but if you wanted to book your own flights to London (or elsewhere in the UK), we can make all onward travel arrangements (including flights) from there. Alternatively, if you are booking your own flights to an airport in continental Europe that’s appropriate for your holiday, we can book onward rail travel and/or taxis.   • Since our holidays are self-guided, we recommend calling us for a chat about your plans before making a booking, especially if it’s the first time you’ve booked with us.
    The price panel shows the supplement for a single room and also the single traveller charge (this covers (luggage) transfers and other costs which are usually shared between two people).
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

    Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

    When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to France, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

    Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • The official language is French. The currency is the Euro. French time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.

  • The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) provides up-to-date, country-by-country travel advice, as well as information on security, local laws, passports and visas for UK citizens.

  • You are the best judge of your child’s/children’s capabilities. We are happy to take bookings for families of older children/teenagers if they walk regularly, love the outdoors and are comfortable with the distances and ascent/descent involved. Please note that the bedrooms at most of the accommodation we use will normally only sleep a maximum of 3 people, and sometimes only 2.
