  • NEW improved itinerary for 2018

Lake Lucerne, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful lakes, is surrounded by spectacular heights, including the ‘Queen of Mountains’, the Rigi. Historic steamers ply the vivid blue waters, linking the handsome city of Lucerne with elegant villages along the shore, while rack railways give easy access to high, panoramic paths. Combining superb walking with thrilling boat, rail and cable car journeys (all included), this walk takes you right into the heart of the mountains, avoiding many steep sections on foot, allowing you to enjoy the constantly changing vistas of the lake and mountain backdrop.

The lake in summer is a revelation, whether for a cooling dip or leisurely ferry trip to access the mountains via one of the many cog railways and cable cars. And warm evening lakeside dining is sublime.

Starting in the historic lakeside city of Lucerne, this journey takes you across the eponymous lake, both south and north, to explore the surrounding mountains and relaxed waterside resorts with their almost Mediterranean summertime feel. The walking is suitable for all of average fitness, featuring a mix of short up- and down-hill routes, and longer routes on the flat. The landscapes through which you walk are surprisingly varied, and the shape of the lake, together with the effects of the light, make for an ever-evolving panorama of which it is impossible to tire. In late June and throughout July, the flowers are spectacular, while cooler, clear September days are a favourite time for walkers.
