Ibiza & Formentera’s Hidden Charms

Quiet corners of the Balearic Islands

This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • walk across Ibiza’s scenic headlands to secret coves
  • discover the lagoons and white-sand beaches of Formentera
  • outdoor pool at every hotel

Head to north-eastern Ibiza and you won’t find any sign of the party set. Instead, inviting trails lead you to sleepy villages, secret coves, silent stone watchtowers from which islanders would look out for pirates, and glorious viewpoints. Ibiza may be known as the White Island, but this is far from the only colour in the landscape – greens, blues and reds also dominate the views as you gaze across the pine woods, and almond and olive groves planted in the island’s rich ochre-coloured soil, towards the sea.

Set aside your preconceptions of Ibiza; away from the hedonistic resorts of the south and west are panoramic headlands and enticing coves linked by beautiful trails.

James Keane, Inntravel

If north-eastern Ibiza is tranquil, its exclusive neighbour, the most southerly of the Balearic Islands, is slower still. The fact that Formentera is hard to reach without first going to Ibiza has worked to its advantage, meaning that it remains largely unspoiled – and wonderfully serene. Fields of wheat, oats, figs, almonds and grapes, separated by dry-stone walls, are cultivated in the interior, while along the coast you’ll find reminders of the two industries on which islanders relied for centuries: salt pans whose waters turn pink at certain times of the year, and traditional racks on which fish are still dried in the open air. This is a place for taking it easy – for enjoying gentle strolls, unwinding on the white-sand beaches, and drinking in the views of the omnipresent sea in its myriad shades of blue, turquoise and emerald.
