Your destination, which you reach via the beautiful Val d'Orcia, is the Renaissance city of Pienza, the birthplace of Pope Pius II, who dreamed of transforming it into an ideal city. His efforts may be admired in the precious architectural scenario designed by Bernardo Rossellino from 1459 to 1462. The main square, the cathedral (and its museum) and the Palazzo Piccolomini appear as if unaffected by time. The groomed countryside is also home to the tiny hamlet of Monticchiello, where a reign of silence and mystery remain. Here, you will be able to sample the olive oil and slightly spicy pecorino cheese after your rewarding walk.
