A walking holiday in the Dolomites

In the easternmost corner of South Tyrol, cosying up to the Austrian border, lies the grasshopper-green Pusteria Valley, a true delight to discover. Typical Tyrolean villages, with their distinctive Romanesque church spires, nestle either side of the rushing River Rienza, and are scattered among expansive fields, woodland and pastures.
This walking holiday, on which you stay at a variety of welcoming hotels, takes you to the shores of glittering Dolomite lakes and into the heart of the region’s celebrated ‘Three Peaks’ – an absolute treat. The views, of a thickly forested Alpine ridge to the north and the snaggle-toothed granite peaks of the Sesto and Braies Dolomites to the south, are simply mesmerising. The route you follow is well signposted on good paths, and the excellent local transport system means you can tailor each day’s walk to suit your own needs.

  • Arrival in Maria Saalen or Gais
    Night 1: at Hotel Saalerwirt in Maria Saalen or, if you would like the opportunity to start your holiday with a striking high-altitude walk (see Day 1 below), at the Hotel Windschar in Gais.
    As your first night’s accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of walking. 
  • Circular walk from Maria Saalen or Gais: 10.5km or 8km
    Your first day's walk depends on which hotel you have chosen.

    Circular walk from Maria Saalen: 10.5km, 3.5hrs; ascent/descent 300m
    Warm up with a gentle circular walk via the nearby town of San Lorenzo di Sebato, overlooked by its twin castles, Michelsburg and Sonnenburg, before returning along leafy paths close to the Rio Gaderaand back to the idyllic village of Maria Saalen, where you might like to take advantage of the hotel’s spa facilities.

    Linear walk from Gais: 8km, 3.5hrs; ascent/descent 530m
    If you are staying at the Hotel Windschar, we provide notes for a striking circular route high in the mountains. After an initial ascent by cable car (pay locally), the route leads you above the tree line and affords glorious views over the Zillertal Alps on the Italo-Austrian border and right across to the Dolomites. Lunch at one of the mountain huts dotted along the way before returning to Gais by bus.

  • Maria Saalen or Gais to Braies: 19km, 7.5hrs; ascent 1060m / descent 1085m
    A transfer to your starting point helps you tackle a traverse through forest and beyond the treeline to rocky Kühwiesenkopf (2,144 metres). The commanding views from the summit are worth pausing for – ahead lies a panorama reminiscent of the Canadian Rockies in which starkly beautiful limestone mountains, whose lower slopes are densely clad in evergreens, shelter Lake Braies far below. You will then have the chance to admire the emerald-coloured waters of this lake – widely considered to be the most picturesque in the Dolomites – at close range before continuing to your next enticing destination: the hospitable Hotel Edelweiss.

    For a shorter day, it is possible to complete the section of the route between Lake Braies and the Hotel Edelweiss by bus (pay locally; deduct 6km).

  • Circular walk from Braies: 10km, 3.5hrs; ascent/descent 395m
    Today brings one of the walking highlights of the week – a fabulous circuit to the beautiful and relatively undiscovered Alpine plateau of Prato Piazza. Up here, at 2,000 metres above sea level, the scenery is wild and romantic, and the views are simply astonishing.

    This route begins and ends with a short bus transfer – pay locally for both journeys.

  • Choice of routes from Braies to Moso: 14.5km or 17km

    Braies to Moso – high-level option: 14.5km, 5hrs, ascent 325m/descent 1265m
    This is a thrilling route which brings a real sense of adventure. After a taxi transfer to Dobbiaco, a bus conveys you into the mountains (2,300 metres) to begin a high-level hike around the awe-inspiring ‘Tre Cime di Lavaredo’ – the celebrated Dolomite massif that is one of most iconic sights in the entire Alpine region. The tallest of the three peaks soars 2,999 metres into the sky, and together they resemble the plates on a dinosaur’s back. Don’t forget your camera! The final section of the walk leads via the pretty Val Fiscalina to Moso.

    Braies to Moso – low-level option: 17km, 6hrs; ascent 510m / descent 375m
    Also commencing with a transfer, this relatively easy, but long route takes you via the historic town of San Candido and through an enchanting valley to reach Moso.

    Whichever route you choose, your final three nights are spent at the Hotel Drei Zinnen, superbly positioned in the shadow of the ‘Three Peaks’ and the bizarre rock formations of the Sesto Dolomites.

  • Choice of circular walks from Moso: 12km or 14.5km
    We suggest two great walks for your time in Moso. Leave time, though, to relax in the hotel pool or on the panoramic terrace as you reflect on a week of remarkable scenery and fine hospitality.

    Circular walk via Rotwand and Montecroce Pass: 12km, 4hrs; ascent 170m/descent 745m
    Start with a ride on the gondola up to the high 'Rotwand' pastures (1,921 metres), set just below the mighty Croda Rossa limestone peaks, which takes its name from the reddish hue of the rocks. From the upper station, you make a wonderful traverse across the dramatic and rugged northern slopes of Croda Rossa, before descending steadily through the forest to reach the Montecroce pass (1,636 metres), where you cross the valley for an easy return alongside the river back to Moso.

    Circular walk from Sesto along Carniche Alps: 14.5km, 5.5hrs; ascent 490m / decent 1200m
    Take a trip by cable car from neighbouring Sesto to explore the lofty panoramic crest of the Carniche Alps, which form the border with Austria. The astonishing views either side of the ridge make this a walk that you are likely to remember for some time to come.

    Beautiful walking. Note that the gondola for Mt Elmo and the gondola for Croda Rossa are run by the same company and you can save money by buying tickets on-line beforehand. Both are continuous running gondolas. On Day 4, make sure you buy the ticket for the bus to Rifugio Auronzo a few days in advance as the bus driver refused to accept people without tickets.

    Really enjoyed the holiday. Inntravel was excellent. The only glitch was our train connection was cancelled on the first night, we were an hour late arriving at our destination station and couldn't get hold of the hotel to let them know as we had no phone signal.

    The scenery on this trip was absolutely spectacular--an appealing variety of majestic rocky peaks and lovely mountain pastures. And the sounds were lovely too--goat and cowbells. The hotels were warm and welcoming and had much-appreciated wellness centers with saunas and steam baths, perfect after a long day on the trail. Our tips are to start early and realize that sometimes when the walk has many meters of descent there may be alternate routes (eg, going down on a gondola or taking a city bus back). Trekking poles were invaluable.

    The Dolomites are truly spectacular and the suggested routes for this holiday enable access to scenery which is nothing short of stunning. Although one of the routes was closed due to storm damage, we were otherwise fortunate to have good weather for the high level walks and would recommend this holiday without hesitation. Without exception, we found the hospitality warm and the meals excellent at each of the hotels where we stayed. Travel on Italian/Austrian trains, buses and cable cars was very easy. Previous reviews about this holiday proved very useful, especially the advice to book an earlier taxi from the Hotel Edelweiss to catch the bus up to Refugio Auronzo at the start of the Three Peaks walk on day 4. This is a deservedly popular route and traffic queues do build up early on the toll road, but with an early start and an assertive bus driver(!) we skipped most of the traffic. We tagged on extra nights in Innsbruck and enjoyed the charm of the old town sights and cafes as much as the bird's eye view of the city from Hafelekarspitze.

    Walking in the magical scenery in the Dolomite mountains was wonderful and the routes selected by Inntravel were well chosen to give you a really good introduction to the region. The supporting materials provided (maps and trip notes) were excellent and you should definitely read these carefully before you travel.
    My tips would be:
    1. If you want to brush up on a language for your trip then make it German, alkthough you can definitely get by with Italian or English.
    2. Some of your walks could get disrupted by weather or local route closures (we had a couplke of paths closed due to storm damage and logging activity) but with so many well marked paths across the region there is always another route. Using a GPS app with the GPX files supplied makes navigation really easy.

    3. The history of the region is fascinating. The trip notes give you a good introduction but if you are interested then look at other sources as well.

    The Three Peaks hiking week is wonderful. This is a fantastic area for hiking and we would happily go back to explore other areas of the Dolomites. The hikes are varied and all the hotels were extremely welcoming and friendly.

    This was our 4th Inntravel trip and we are getting more confident at adapting the trip for ourselves, for instance taking a gondola (if available) on the ascent, and maybe on a rainy day just going to the next town for a coffee.

    My daughter and I had a remarkable trip hiking through the Dolomites. Lake Braies was such a reward to rest our weary feet after a strenuous hike over the mountain. Walking through the myriad of soaring jagged rocky peaks, including the 3 Peaks, we felt as though we had entered another world. The stark beauty of the landscape was huge in scale and magnificent. The hike through to the Fischleintal Valley was challenging and beautiful and we had a well deserved lunch at the Refugio before our final descent through the wildflowers of the vally to our hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our time together hiking through the incredible landscape.

    We very much enjoyed this holiday. All the hotels were very good although we found that there was a lot of road noise at the Hotel Edelweiss, so much so that we did not use the balcony.  We would sacrifice the view for a quiet room at the back of the hotel. Our favourite hotel was Hotel Saalerwirt, where they were very friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. On day four, the three peaks, we got the taxi to come earlier than scheduled which proved very useful as the bus journey up to Refugio Auronzo took over an hour as the traffic was very busy. Although there were a lot of people on the walk the views were spectacular and we very fortunate with the weather. Both the walks recommended from Hotel Drei Zinnen were excellent and we found it was cheaper to buy the cable car tickets online rather than at the ticket office.

    I noticed that the Three Peaks holiday is not available in 2023. I did wonder why as it's a lovely holiday. 
    We have already completed the Magical Valley walkin a previous year and this time it was as beautiful as we remembered it. In order to complete all three walks in the second venue you did have to stay there another night which we did. That could be stressed so that you didn't have to choose between walks.

    Dolomites outstandingly beautiful.  Hotel staff uniformly welcoming and friendly.  Garda lovely. Ferry timetable out of date and walk to Monte Baldo impossible. Inntravel as usual excellent.

    We have been on numerous Inntravel holidays, and this time combined three holidays giving us three weeks abroad. It was an excellent selection, no time wasted between holidays, and the travel arrangements Inntravel sourced for us, were perfect. We left Hotel Wiesenhof at 10.30am and arrived at our first Italian hotel at 2.00pm. The choice of hotels was good, particularly Hotel Hubertushof with its extremely friendly hosts, beautiful peaceful setting and excellent food. Pertisau was very special, Hotel Wiesenhof outstanding, and we particularly enjoyed the walk to Rofanspitze. The Dolomites were very busy with tourists, but loved the walking routes as wherever possible they took us away from the main tourist paths, so one could enjoy the peace and tranquility of the mountains. Two walks not to be missed are Mount Specie at Prato Piazza, and Mt Elmo. Gondolas have replaced the Cable car at Sesto, so there is no waiting as they run continuously. On our last night of the holiday, Frau Watschinger hosted a cocktail evening with an excellent guitarist who entertained us. The food at all the hotels was exceptional. Overall a magical holiday, so well organised as always by Inntravel. Thank you so much, we can't wait to plan our next adventure!

    We thoroughly enjoyed this trip: great walks and excellent organisation. We extended by 1-2 days in each of the locations, and especially enjoyed Hotel Saalerwirt (a truly excellent but still unpretentious hotel) and Hotel Drei Zinnen (old-fashioned charm in the best sense); Hotel Edelweiss is OK but on a busy road (although the traffic drops to almost zero after about 7.00 p.m.).  Owing to our extra days, we did all the optional walks and one or two of our own devising (such as from Hotel Edelweiss to Niederdorf on rt 1 and then back on the 1A via Lercha and Plung). Note that it is now necessary to book ahead for the bus from Dobbiaco to Rifugio Auronzo. Since we hadn’t realised that and couldn’t get seats on early buses for Option A to Moso, we walked option B (the low route) from Dobbiaco to Moso, and started by spending time at the local museum handily located at the start of the walk in Dobbiaco  - very interesting without demanding much time. We easily did option A via a bus direct from Moso all the way to Rifugio Auronzo (must be booked in advance, and an early start is advisable). We tagged on an overnight in Innsbruck and found the Inntravel notes (walking tour and restaurant suggestions) excellent. We spent a few days in Brunico at the beginning which we highly recommend – a lovely town with two Messner Mountain museums in the vicinity and excellent restaurants (K. Bernard Enoteca) and pastisserie (Acherer).

  • We’ll send you route notes and maps 2-3 weeks before your holiday. The route notes not only contain directions to get from A to B, but also include practical information about places of interest and eateries along each route, plus cultural information about the area. If/when you are moving between hotels, you leave your luggage in reception as you leave, and it will be transferred ahead to your next accommodation, meaning that all you need to take with you are a camera, sun cream, drinks, food and waterproofs.

  • Yes, prior to going on holiday you will be able to download GPX tracks so that you can follow your route on your smartphone or dedicated GPS device if you wish. It’s entirely up to you whether or not you use them – our detailed, step-by-step route notes remain the principal means of guiding you from A to B – but we provide them as a secondary means of navigation for additional reassurance when walking.
  • We can book a wide range of routes from the UK with a variety of airlines. As well as being more convenient for you to book all elements of your holiday together, it also means that we’ll accept liability for your travel arrangements, so if things go wrong, such as the airline going bust, we’ll make suitable alternative arrangements for you. The fee for this service is £35 per person (£15 for children aged 2-11). More information on flights >
  • Absolutely! We are experts in tailored rail travel. Making use of sleeper trains or stopovers in cities along the route, we can get you from London to virtually anywhere in mainland Europe. We can even make arrangements to Mallorca, Sicily and Norway with a combination of ferries and rail. Please contact us to discuss your plans.
  • We can’t book flights that originate outside the UK, but if you wanted to book your own flights to London (or elsewhere in the UK), we can make all onward travel arrangements (including flights) from there. Alternatively, if you are booking your own flights to an airport in continental Europe that’s appropriate for your holiday, we can book onward rail travel and/or taxis.   • Since our holidays are self-guided, we recommend calling us for a chat about your plans before making a booking, especially if it’s the first time you’ve booked with us.
    The price panel shows the supplement for a single room and also the single traveller charge (this covers (luggage) transfers and other costs which are usually shared between two people).
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

    Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

    When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Italy, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

    Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • The principal official language is Italian, though some regions have a second official language, such as South Tyrol, where German is widely spoken. The currency is the Euro. Italian time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.

  • You are the best judge of your child’s/children’s capabilities. We are happy to take bookings for families of older children/teenagers if they walk regularly, love the outdoors and are comfortable with the distances and ascent/descent involved. Please note that the bedrooms at most of the accommodation we use will normally only sleep a maximum of 3 people, and sometimes only 2.
