Hill-Top Villages of the Luberon

The heart of Provence

This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • fascinating, quintessentially Provençal villages
  • varied walking, great scenery
  • visit Roussillon’s spectacular ochre mines
  • delicious regional cuisine

Beneath the dense forest and bare limestone cliffs of the imposing Luberon Massif lies a sunny plain whose undulations are crowned by ancient villages of honey-coloured houses that cluster around crumbling châteaux. Here, between the Alps and the Mediterranean, you are in the very heart of Provence, where the vineyards of the Luberon and the Vaucluse thrive in the warmth, their light wines the ideal accompaniment to the delicious regional cuisine flavoured with rosemary, thyme and garlic.

A short walk from the hotel is an old fort with sweeping views of the valley. Climb higher and the whole of Provence reveals itself: to the north, the looming giant of Mont Ventoux; to the south Mont Sainte-Victoire, and on a clear day, the Mediterranean.

The Guardian
On this holiday you journey westwards, from the brilliant yellow ochre mines of the Petit Luberon near Roussillon to the white chalk landscapes on the flanks of Mont Ventoux, passing through a series of remarkable hill-top villages. Characterised by narrow streets of sturdy, shuttered houses, they bask in the glorious sunshine, affording sweeping views over the surrounding landscapes.
