From the Tyrol to the Bavarian Alps

A spectacular adventure on the Austro-German border

This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • highly praised hotels and guesthouses with fine views and excellent facilities
  • flexible routes on well-waymarked paths
  • superb Alpine flowers and delightful villages of frescoed houses
  • enjoy wonderful Tyrolean and Bavarian hospitality
  • walk on the slopes of Germany’s highest peak

The dramatic, jagged peaks of the Wetterstein range to the west of Innsbruck, marking the border between Austria and Germany, dominate your first week. Here, the picturesque valley of Leutaschtal, in the mountains above the River Inn, is dotted with pretty villages beneath a backdrop of forested slopes. Our welcoming family-run 4-star hotels here offer the very best of Tyrolean hospitality – and cuisine – in a friendly, convivial atmosphere. In spring and early summer the Alpine meadows are awash with colourful flowers, while the fresh fine days of autumn are perfect for walking.

When we turned a corner and saw the wonderful views that were to accompany us on our descent to the Höllen Gorge, my husband turned and called 'Wait until you see this!'

Your second week takes you towards the mighty Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany, rewarding you with inspirational views. As you head over the border into Bavaria, the terrain becomes more rugged, the walking slightly tougher, though other changes are more subtle – the onion-domed churches remain, yet the handsome villages where many houses boast exquisite frescoes are decidedly different. Your route takes you through deep gorges and scented forests and past sparkling lakes and fairy-tale castles which seem all the more fancy in contrast to the jagged limestone peaks.
