Seville

Nowhere encapsulates the glories of southern Spain in all its moods than the beguiling and enigmatic city of Seville. This is iconic Spain…a land of vibrant and exuberant people, home to flamenco, tapas and bullfighting. The city preserves the most important legacies of that great flowering of Islamic culture in Europe which took place between the 9th and 15th centuries. It is expressed in great monumental architecture – not least that of the Alcázar – and also in quieter courtyards and scented gardens.
Wander through the historic streets to see the incredible architecture, and to find quiet corners to enjoy a tasty tapas lunch. At midday, the locals converge on the Parque de Maria Luisa with its ornamental ponds and welcome shade, while in the heat of the afternoon, you can seek refuge in the cool, narrow streets of Santa Cruz. In the evening, indulge in a dinner of Moorish influenced cuisine before seeking out one of the city’s famed flamenco shows.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • An introduction
Home of Carmen, Don Juan and Figaro, romantic Seville is a place you will never forget. The city is set amid the red-chalk plains of western Andalucía and bisected by the great Guadalquivir River, along which the conquistadors sent their plundered American gold. The soaring minaret of the Giralda dominates the central skyline, and stands as a testament to Seville’s great Moorish past.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
We provide detailed route notes for a self-guided walking tour which takes in many overlooked corners as well as the famous heritage sites such as the Moorish Alcázar, with its impressive ceilings, courtyards and beautiful gardens; the striking cathedral; the ornate Plaza de España; and the atmospheric Barrio Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter, where orange trees – laden with fruit in December – grow in the courtyards of the whitewashed houses lining the picturesque cobbled streets.

The covered passageway heading off the Patio de Banderas called the Judería is worth visiting; enter the Patio from here and you’ll get an unforgettable view of the cathedral. Throughout the city you will find a traditional tapas bar seemingly on every street where the local fare is washed down with ice cold fino sherry.
  • Semana Santa & more
Seville is a city that likes to celebrate, with the most impressive parades coming at Easter during Semana Santa (Holy Week). Two weeks later, look out for the Feria de Sevilla (Seville Fair) which is celebrated for a week and commences with a midday procession of horses and carriages, followed by a gathering at the bullring. Marquees line the Guadalquivir River, while dancing, live music events, flamenco dresses and tapas are all there to be sampled and enjoyed. Later in the year, look out for festivals such as Corpus Christi and the Día de San Juan, both of which take place in June and always draw large exuberant crowds.
