Holiday information

Málaga

Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol, the bustling city of Málaga makes an ideal stepping-off point for an exploration of rural Andalucia – or the perfect place to relax by the sea for a couple of days after your adventures inland. The historic Old Town is often overlooked by visitors passing through the airport or heading for the region's many beaches, but it's worthy of leisurely exploration in its own right.
Our detailed walking tours will guide you through the streets to discover two very different sides to the city, including historic monuments and art galleries housing famous works of art by Picasso (Málaga's most famous son), amongst others; and the surprisingly tranquil parkland that surrounds the city's ancient fortress from where there are great views over the town, the port and the coast. As you explore, be sure to call into one or more of the many tapas bars and cafés where you can sample the local wines and Andalucian specialities.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • A Roman theatre, Moorish castles, great artworks & more
The streets of the historic heart of Málaga have far more places of interest than many might suppose. Far from being just the city where your airport happens to be, it boasts a rich and proud heritage spanning many centuries. Among the highlights are: the Gothic cathedral, known as La Manquita ('one armed woman') because only one of its two towers was built; remnants of the walls of the ancient Phoenician city (visible in the cellar of the Picasso Museum); the 1st-century BC Roman theatre; and two Moorish castles, the Castillo de Gibralfaro and the Alcazaba.

As this is the birthplace of Picasso, you won't be surprised to find galleries and museums devoted to him. The Museo Casa Natal now occupies the home where he was born, while 200 metres away is the Picasso Museum which contains a large collection of his paintings, sculptures, drawings, sketchbooks, engravings and ceramics.
It's a great city for shopping, too, whether you prefer chic modern boutiques or traditional shops. One place you mustn't miss is the Atarazanas Market, one of Málaga's architectural gems. Here, you'll find colourful stalls straining under the weight of the freshest of fish, meats, cheeses, fruits and vegetables, all illuminated by light filtering through a vast stained glass window.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
To help you make the most of your time, we include notes for two self-guided walking tours: the first takes you round the Old Quarter and many of the sites listed above; while the second explores the hill-top Castillo de Gibralfaro, and the seafront, via the lighthouse and Pompidou Centre.
