This Holiday in a nutshell
  • birthplace of Christopher Columbus & John Cabot
  • notes for self-guided city walking tours included
  • well-located, characterful hotel
  • enjoy as an add-on to another Inntravel holiday in northern Italy

The city of Genoa has had a long and proud tradition as a seafaring port and during the early Middle Ages Genoese merchants vied with their counterparts from Venice for control over the Mediterranean. This was the age of great exploration and discovery in the new world and it is perhaps no coincidence that both Cristoforo Colombo (Christopher Columbus) and Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) were born here, though both ended up working for foreign powers (Spain and England respectively).
It is a place that 'grows upon you' every day. There seems to be always something to find out in it. There are the most extraordinary alleys and by-ways to walk about in... It abounds in the strangest contrasts; things that are picturesque, ugly, mean, magnificent, delightful, and offensive, break upon the view at every turn.
Charles Dickens, ‘Pictures from Italy’
Genoa is much more than just a major seaport – it boasts a rich and proud history centred on the old town and ancient port. From either of our hotels, it is just a short stroll to the Old Town where we recommend wandering around its narrow alleyways, ancient churches and Renaissance-style palaces using our included walking notes.
