Holiday information

Genoa

The city of Genoa has had a long and proud tradition as a seafaring port and during the early Middle Ages Genoese merchants vied with their counterparts from Venice for control over the Mediterranean. This was the age of great exploration and discovery in the New World and it is perhaps no coincidence that both Cristoforo Colombo (Christopher Columbus) and Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) were born here. Delve into the city's rich history as you explore the narrow alleyways, ancient churches and Renaissance-style palaces of the Old Town, using our included walking notes to guide you round.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
Discover Genoa's key sights and hidden gems on our self-guided city walking tour. The main features include the Piazza de Ferrari, around which are the Opera and the Palace of the Doges; the monumental Via Garibaldi; and the vibrant narrow streets and alleys of the Old Town. There is also the house where Christopher Columbus is said to have been born and various attractions at 'Porto Antico', the historic centre of the port, with its many waterfront shops and eateries.
  • Delve into the past
During the early-nineteenth century, Genoa’s leading citizens, led by its principal statesman, Giuseppe Mazzini, played a crucial role in the unification of Italy, which was achieved in 1861. A museum to the man who propounded a ‘United States of Europe’ way back in the 1860s is just one of many you can visit in the city. Others include the Red and White Palaces, the Museum of World Cultures and the Museo del Tesoro, which houses the silver platter that reputedly displayed the head of John the Baptist.
  • Piazza Castello & the Corso Italia
For a bird’s eye view over the city, we recommend taking the elevator from Piazza del Portello up to Piazza Castello; or take the funicular to Chiesa di Sant'Anna from where you can walk back down to the city. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Corso Italia, a seafront promenade that runs for 2.5 kilometres towards the promontory of Portofino and the small lighthouse of Punta Vagno.
