Copenhagen

Visit Copenhagen and you will be struck by the omnipresence of the sea (København, as the Danes know it, translates as ‘merchants’ port’). And if the Baltic always feels close, so too does Sweden, not much more than a stone’s throw away on the other side of Øresund, a relatively narrow strait spanned by a bridge.

Water is not the only abundant feature. There are plenty of parks and green spaces, as well as a wide range of museums and galleries, not to mention a wealth of royal palaces and castles, whose towers are, along with the spires of churches, the only thing to punctuate the otherwise flat skyline.
Unusually for a capital city, most of the main sights can be reached on foot, though you may prefer to do as locals do and get around by bike – Copenhagen is one of, if not the, most cycle-friendly cities in the world.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
We provide notes for a self-guided walking tour, taking in the main sights. The Kastellet is one of the best preserved star fortresses in northern Europe, while the Amalienborg (the main residence of the Danish royal family) is considered to be the greatest example of Danish Rococo architecture. Another imposing building with royal connections is the Rosenborg Castle, which now boasts a fine collection of tapestries and the Royal Danish Collection, including the Danish crown jewels.

The National Museum explores the history of the Danes from pre-history to modern times, and there are numerous other museums devoted to subjects as diverse as design, medical history and theatre – the latter is housed in an old opera house. Be sure to climb the city’s aptly named Round Tower for a bird’s-eye view of the capital.

As you explore with our walking notes, you’ll learn about the influential figures who have shaped the city, the characters who have been honoured with statues, and much more – our notes provide the type of information you’d expect on a guided tour, with the advantage that you can explore at your own pace and detour as and when you wish.
  • Venture further afield by bike
To explore beyond the city centre, it is well worth hiring bikes (the city operates a bike-sharing scheme, or alternatively you may be able to hire bikes from your hotel). Copenhagen is largely flat and has an extremely bike-friendly culture, so this is a great way to discover the canals of the stylish Christianshavn district, the green spaces of the Frederiksberg area to the west of the city centre, or even some of the beaches nearby.
