Bilbao

Resembling a ship, or a flower with unfurling petals, depending on the angle from which you look at it, the titanium, glass and limestone structure that is the Guggenheim never fails to take first-time visitors by surprise. But what is perhaps more surprising is the rest of the city: how it has shrugged off its industrial past to become a cultural and gastronomic hub.
For all its forward-thinking and avant-gardism, Bilbao’s second big draw is its Casco Viejo (Old Town), whose pedestrianised streets are lined with stone-built, Neoclassical and Baroque buildings characterised by tall windows and ornate wrought-iron balconies. Here, do as locals do and while away a couple of hours on a pintxos (tapas) trail, arguably the best way to explore this part of the city and sample a variety of the excellent cuisine for which the Basque Country is renowned.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Guggenheim & other museums
Located in the heart of the city, on the banks of the River Nervión, and designed by Frank Gehry, the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum (closed Mondays except in July and August) is nothing if not striking. Inside, the permanent collection of paintings, sculptures and installations from 1950 onwards is often complemented by a range of temporary exhibitions.

If Bilbao’s star attraction does not sate your appetite for art, head through the park to the Museo de Bellas Artes (closed Tuesdays). This is one of Spain’s more important fine arts museums and boasts works by Goya, El Greco, Veláquez and Zubarán, as well as modern Basque artists.
  • Ensanche & Casco Viejo
The Museo de Bellas Artes is located in a part of the city known as Ensanche, the name given to the New Town, an eclectic mix of Baroque, Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture. The Old Town, or Casco Viejo, is located on the other side of the river. If you are walking (there is an excellent metro system, but Bilbao is compact enough to explore on foot), it’s worth detouring via Abando station to see its huge stained-glass window and then approaching the Casco Viejo via the elegant, late 19th-century Teatro Arriaga and the arcaded, Neo-Classical Plaza Nueva.

Just south of the square is the Gothic cathedral, and beyond this are the Siete Calles (Seven Streets) of the Casco Viejo. Originally there were just three, enclosed by a wall, but as the city grew, the defences were dismantled and a further four streets built parallel to the original ones, which nowadays means all the more choice when it comes to the pintxo  bars and independent boutiques which occupy many of the old stone buildings.
  • Puente Vizcaya & Plenzia
Beyond the city, accessible by metro, is the Puente Vizcaya. When it was built in 1893, it was the world’s first iron transporter bridge, a fact that has earned it UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Over 120 years later, it is still functioning, and you can cross its pedestrian walkway 45 metres above the river before catching a ride back across the water in the gondola itself. You could simply return to the city from here, but if you carry on by metro for a few more stops you’ll come to Plenzia’s sandy beach, a tempting option on a warm summer’s day…
