Holiday information

Faro

The city of Faro grew from humble beginnings but its strategic importance was noted by Romans, Byzantines, Visigoths and Moors, all of whom had powerful influences on the city you see today. Far from simply being the gateway to the Algarve, the diminutive waterfront city of Faro is brimming with charm and personality.

Take time to explore the narrow cobbled alleyways of the Moorish Old Town; wander along the waterfront, with its marina, bars and restaurants; and take a boat ride out to the Ria Formosa Natural Park, to visit the lagoons of this protected area just off the coast.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
We provide notes for a walking tour around the principal sights of the city and, as it is not particularly large, you will have plenty of time to stop at one of the many cafés and bars for refreshments as you wander.

Places you'll get the chance to visit include the Manuel Bivar gardens; the Praça da Rainha (Queen’s square); the church of São Pedro which contains one of the first Baroque altar pieces in the Algarve; and the church of Carmo, with its iconic twin bell towers and rather eerie Chapel of Bones – the walls are lined with the bones of over 1,200 Carmelite monks. At the end of Rua Vasco de Gama, named after the great Portuguese navigator, you can call in to the Regional Museum of the Algarve, which provides an insight into the traditional ways of life from the first half of the 20th century.

The most fascinating part of Faro is the Old Town – the Vila-Adentro – which stands behind the defensive walls. Entering via the ornate Arco de la Vila, you discover narrow winding streets, the Faro Archaeological Museum, the Jewish Museum, the ruins of the castle  and the imposing cathedral of Faro – built on the site of a mosque, which itself was built upon the site of the original Roman forum.
  • Ria Formosa Natural Park & more
There’s plenty to keep you occupied in Faro, but if you wish to delve more into the culture of the outlying region, you could take a boat trip from the marina to visit the Ria Formosa Natural Park, one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal. Extending over 60km of coastline, it consists of a series of barrier-islands, marshes, dunes, salt pans and fresh-water lagoons which are home to an impressive diversity of flora and fauna, including the unique sultan hen.

Alternatively, ten kilometres north of Faro is the town of Estoi. Served by bus from Faro, it is home to one of the finest Rococo palaces in Portugal, the Palacio de Estoi. There are also the very interesting Roman ruins of Milreu, the best preserved in the Algarve; while the town itself is a reminder of how the Algarve used to be.

If you haven't yet had your fill of beaches, yet another option is to hop on the bus to nearby Praia de Faro, a five-kilometre-long stretch of golden sand which runs along the entire length of the sea-facing side of Ilha de Faro (Faro Island).
