Holiday information

Bologna

This ancient city, the provincial capital of Emilia Romagna, has a unique, and very civilised, atmosphere, with Europe’s oldest university and best-preserved medieval centre. In the heart of the city, the Piazze Maggiore and Nettuno are among Italy’s finest squares, and their famous leaning medieval towers dominate the skyline.
To discover the soul of Bologna, you need to experience its unsurpassed food and wine culture, which is based on proud Emilian traditions. Savour rich balsamic vinegars, succulent Modena ham, tangy Parmigiano Reggiano, and robust wine from the surrounding hills at one of the city’s countless traditional cafés and bars, where drinks are served to the sound of jazz.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • An introduction
The historical centre of Bologna has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as it contains such a high concentration of important medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture and artistic monuments. Follow the narrow alleys of the old medieval market while always under the watchful eye of the city’s iconic twin leaning towers. In the 12th century, the elite ruling families built competing towers to show off their wealth. There were once 200 such structures in the city, though today the Torri Asinelli and Torri Garisenda are the only survivors.

Over the centuries, Bologna has been nicknamed La Dotta, La Grassa and La Rossa because it has the oldest university in the western world (the ‘Learned’); a fine culinary tradition (‘the Fat’); and lots of red-brick façades, pan-tile roofs and terracotta decorations (‘the Red’) – aspects of which you will encounter as you explore on foot.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
Our detailed city walking tour notes take you from the Piazza Maggiore, opened in 1200, to visit many of the city’s main historic sites, though with plenty of time to visit intriguing shops and markets, including the bustling Piazza della Mercanzia – you are, after all, walking at your own pace. Explore the many Lombardic and Bolognese-style palaces and the remarkable leaning towers; spend time admiring the many works of art that adorn the walls of the Accademia, one of Italy’s most renowned art galleries; and relax in one of the city’s 200 famed osterie, traditional taverns still very popular with the Bolognese.
