Like no other city, Athens can uniquely lay claim to being the capital of not just one country but all of Europe, for it was here that civilisation and democracy were born. Over the centuries, myriad conquerors left their mark on the architecture, culture and traditions, creating a remarkable capital city that boasts some of the world’s most famous historical landmarks and a modern, vibrant heart centred on the largest pedestrian zone in Europe.

Dominating the city is the jewel in the classical crown – the surviving hill-top temple to Athena, the iconic Parthenon. This ruined, yet elegant, building stands proudly on the Acropolis, compelling visitors from afar to make their way up the sacred hill to stroll amongst its ancient columns and to stand in awe before some of the most important masterpieces in world architecture. Enjoy, too, the far-reaching views over the city and down to Piraeus on the coast.

Notes for a self-guided walking tour included

There’s so much to see and do in Athens that it’s difficult to know where to start. The Parthenon, of course, and the impressive Acropolis Museum, itself one of the most important contemporary works of architecture in Athens, and housing over 4,000 priceless finds from the Acropolis.

There’s Hadrian’s Arch, too, and Panathenaikon, a replica of the ancient Athenian Olympic stadium, made entirely of the same white marble from Mount Penteli as the Parthenon.

But it’s not just about classical ruins – though you will be spoiled for choice. Use our notes to guide you through the streets to the district of Plaka, a lively and narrow pedestrianised road, lined with restaurants on one side and stallholders peddling their wares on the other.

Stop for an iced coffee at one of the cafés before continuing on to Monastiraki, where you’ll find street performers and the Flea Market, containing colourful shops and stalls. End your exploration with a funicular trip to the top of Lykavitos Hill to see the city and mountains beyond from a different perspective.

Located down the road from the Philippos in the Makrigianni area, a quiet residential district with tree-lined streets, the Herodion stands just below the Acropolis, a five-minute walk away. The hotel is contemporary, with a stylish restaurant and an atrium which looks out onto a shady courtyard, while the rooftop bar affords views of the Parthenon, which is floodlit at night. The air-conditioned bedrooms are spacious and comfortable, and equipped with a safe, minibar, satellite television and wi fi.

I thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Athens and the Pelopponese. I recommend visiting the Archaeological Museum in Athens as there are many artefacts from the sites in the Pelopponese, for example the golden masks and jewellery from Mycenae and it provides a great overview before you embark on the journey. The hotels were all lovely and in great locations with good views. We walked a lot! In Mystra we walked down through the site and were not really looking forward to the walk back up the hill as it was very hot, but found a taxi at the cafe on the road below the main entrance. The site itself was fascinating. As described in the notes, the hotel in Kardamyli is about 2km from the town but it is an easy walk to the beach and along by the sea into town. It is a bit steep walking back up the hill but we preferred to walk over driving. Lela's restaurant was well worth a visit: highly recommend. The scenery is stunning in the area. Unfortunately there was persistent torrential rain the day we travelled from Monemvasia to Kardamyli so the drive into the deep Mani was not enjoyable and we could not get out to walk. We also had thunderstorms while in Kardamyli but fortunately these were late afternoon/early evening after we had got back from exploring and before we went out for dinner so we sat on our verandah with an aperitif and watched the storms! I would recommend going prepared for rain end of Sept/beginning Oct but in general the weather was perfect for both sightseeing and the beach. On the way from Kardamyli to Olimpia we decided to visit the Bay of Navarino and Nestor's Palace instead of Ancient Messina. Both were beautiful. It is worth reading up on the history of the naval battles at Navarino between Athens and Sparta and during the battle for Greek independence if you visit the bay. Nestor's Palace is a very small site but well worth a visit in my opinion: very evocative of Homer's description, and peaceful. In Olimpia we ate in the hotel both nights as we couldn't face the steep walk back up from town and the food was really good. The Archimedes museum was worth a visit: the young lady was extremely informative in explaining how things worked. In Nafplio I would say the walk up to the Palamidi castle IS worth the climb, but if you don't want to walk then do visit the castle by car as it is a fabulous site with tremendous views. I would recommend going for lunch in Palia Epidaurus (the port) after visiting Epidaurus. It's a lovely spot with a choice of restaurants.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour in Greece with interesting and always beautifully set accommodation. The freedom of Inntravel holidays is a big attraction for us and always will be. Our only gripe is that we had to go back and forth from Athens airport to get our car and this cut into our time in Athens.
