Munich

Modern-day Munich has repeatedly been voted the ‘most liveable city’ in the world, and it’s easy to see why, when one explores its parks and museums, its wealth of beautiful architecture and its vibrant cultural scene. In the 19th century it flourished as an artistic and imperial centre and even the famous Oktoberfest beer festival harks back to the lavish nuptials for the wedding of Ludwig I and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.
Discover the highlights of the Bavarian capital, starting at the Marienplatz, a wide open square on which stands the Rathaus (town hall) and Glockenspiel (bell tower). Don't miss the treasures of the Baroque Asamkirche or a trip to see the fabulous Nymphenburg Palace and the Olympic Park from the 1972 Games.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
    Despite the unwanted 'attention' Munich received during World War II, you may be surprised to find that some of the ancient city gates still remain – including the Siegestor – Munich’s equivalent of the Arc de Triomphe, which has become a symbol of peace; and the Isartor – a fascinating place from which to start your city walk (notes provided).

    The iconic landmarks of Schloss Nymphenburg, a magnificent Baroque palace, and the Frauenkirche, with its twin-domed towers, are not to be missed, though neither are the city's parks and open spaces, like the Hofgarten and the huge Englischer Garten, which provide welcome respite from busy streets and museums.
  • Relax in a biergarten
    Wherever you go, you cannot escape reference to the city's greatest export - beer! Today there are six breweries in Munich’s beer scene – Löwenbräu, Spaten, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräuhaus, Augustinerbräu and Paulaner, most dating back to the Middle Ages when they were founded by monks or royal decree. Despite its name, the world-famous Oktoberfest (beer festival) actually starts in September! The Hofbräuhaus in a square which goes by the name of Platzl is one of the most famous and probably most enormous beer halls in the world.
  • BMW & more
    On the outskirts of the city you will also find the BMW Museum, and the Deutsches Museum, located on an island in the River Isar. This is one of the oldest and largest science museums in the world – and you could easily spend a day exploring its fascinating halls.

    Finally, one cannot escape the Nazi connections. The Feldherrnhalle (Field Marshall’s Hall), honours the Bavarian army and was the scene of an attempt by Hitler’s supporters in November 1923 to bring down the Weimar Republic in what became known as the Beer Hall Putsch after which Hitler was tried and sent to jail, where he wrote ‘Mein Kampf’. The Feldherrnhalle subsequently acquired cult status amongst Nazi supporters, as did the Altes Rathaus, where, in November 1938, Joseph Goebbels gave a speech, the catalyst to what became known as Kristallnacht.
