This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel cycling, luggage transported
  • gentle, flexible cycling through quintessential Provençal landscapes
  • visit Arles and numerous Roman monuments
  • explore medieval castles and abbeys
  • enjoy great gastronomy and hospitality

The magnificent Roman amphitheatre at Arles; the atmospheric catacombs beneath its Town Hall; the remains of the Roman town of Glanum near St-Rémy-de-Provence; the medieval castle of Tarascon; and the stunning façade of the 12th-century St Gilles Abbey in Fontvieille – these are just a few of the highlights you encounter on this leisurely exploration of a region as rich in historic treasures as it is in beautiful scenery. As you cycle from Tarascon and around Arles, you will soon recognise those timeless landscapes that so inspired Van Gogh during the most prolific year of his life.

It is not the language of painters but the language of nature which one should listen to, the feeling for the things themselves, for reality is more important than the feeling for pictures.

This cycling break promises a wide variety of cultural interest in just a few days, taking you through quintessential Provençal landscapes of olive groves and sunflower fields framed by the dramatic hills of the Alpilles, and into the fringes of the Rhône’s luxuriant delta. The gentle and flexible routes allow you ample time to appreciate it all at a relaxed and leisurely pace – as well as the excellent cuisine featuring succulent lamb from the Crau Plain accompanied by fruity Costières de Nîmes wines.
