Prague, the vibrant Czech capital, is a hugely rewarding and intriguing blend of fascinating history and cutting-edge style. It is the equal of Paris in terms of beauty and boasts numerous architectural, artistic and cultural treasures. Over the centuries, it has been called many names, including ‘Golden Prague’, ‘the Mother of Cities’, ‘the City of Hundred Spires’, ‘the Magic City’, ‘the Heart of Europe’, and even ‘the Rome of the North’. Home to emperors and kings, artists and astronomers, it has worked its subtle magic on generations of visitors, and lent inspiration to musicians and writers, from Mozart to Dvořák and from Kafka to Klíma.
The streets of Prague were a fantasia – scarcely touched by the twenty-first century – or the twentieth or nineteenth, for that matter. Tall houses glowed goldenrod and carmine and eggshell blue, embellished with Rococo plasterwork and capped in roofs of uniform red.

Laini Taylor, author
