Holiday information

Innsbruck

Few cities in the world enjoy such a glorious mountain panorama, with the Dolomites to the south, and the Tyrolean peaks to the north and west. Here, in the heart of the Alps, this ancient city has always been an important trading crossroads thanks to its sheltered position on the broad River Inn, and it was from here that the Tyrolean Habsburgs ruled for several centuries.
As you explore, you will discover frequent reminders of Innsbruck’s imperial past – from the remarkable Goldenes Dachl to the imposing Hofburg Palace – and, whether the city is bathed in summer sunshine or cloaked in snow during your visit, you will be struck by the Baroque splendour of the Altstadt (Old Town), which remains the centre of life in this compact but bustling city.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
Emperor Maximilian I, who reigned from Innsbruck in the late 15th century, left his mark on the city in the form of numerous grand monuments, not least the Goldenes Dachl (a covered balcony clad in 2,657 gilded copper tiles from which his courtiers could look over the square below) and the Cenotaph (an empty tomb surrounded by 28 impressive statues).

To help you to make the most of your time in the city, we provide notes for a self-guided walking tour of the Altstadt (Old Town), taking in these two monuments, the stately Hofburg Palace (the highlight of which is the opulent Giants’ Hall), a couple of museums and other key sights such as the onion-domed City Tower.
  • Ambras Castle & more
If you have time, it is worth venturing beyond the Altstadt to Ambras Castle, a Renaissance palace built by Emperor Maximilian’s great-grandson, Archduke Ferdinand II, in the remains of a medieval fortress.

Accommodation

The hotel is ideally located for exploring the city. We provide suggestions for where to eat out in the documentation that we send you prior to your holiday.

Please note: most rooms in Austrian hotels are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. We refer to these as 'Austrian Twins' and they are locally regarded to serve requests for both double and twin bedded rooms. Separate twin beds or traditional double beds with one large mattress are rare and cannot be guaranteed.
