This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided, cultural journey by car (hire car included)
  • explore the Zingaro Reserve
  • rich diversity of flora & fauna
  • stay on the beautiful Egadi Islands

Sicily’s western coast has proved an inviting stepping stone for myriad invaders over the centuries, and the rich seas, fertile valleys and lucrative saltpans have tempted many to linger. The influence of these settlers is very much in evidence in the island's culture, cuisine and traditions, making it an intriguing place for leisurely exploration. Savour sweet Marsala, one of the world's most famous fortified wines; discover awe-inspiring ruined temples at Segesta and Selinunte; and marvel at the far-reaching views across sea and mountain.

Sicily is an island lying outside time, where past events endure in an external present, a beach on which the tides of successive civilizations have heaped in disorder their assorted treasure.
Vincent Cronin – ‘The Golden Honeycomb’
The tranquil Egadi Islands lie only a short boat ride away from the western coast of Sicily and are the perfect place to spend a few days away from it all. Throughout history the islanders have relied on the sea to provide their living, and today the seafood dishes served in the islands' restaurants, featuring superbly prepared Sicilian classics, are as enticing as the views are inspiring. The island of Marettimo, where you stay, is the wildest, most westward and least developed of the Egadi Islands, comprising green mountains and villages of whitewashed houses leading down to busy little fishing harbours. There's only one road on the island, so enjoy strolls along the cliffs to a crumbling Norman castle, or wander through scented pine forests to find a secluded beach for a quiet swim.
