Swiss Mountain Trails

Bernese Oberland - classic Alpine views
Starting point:

Hotel Victoria, Kandersteg for three nights.

Days 1 & 2

There are numerous walking options for your two days in Kandersteg, particularly if you take advantage of the cable car, gondola or bus to extend your range (pay locally in all instances). Take the gondola for an easy circular walk along the shores of beautiful Lake Oeschinensee, where you can also enjoy an exhilarating ride on the summer toboggan course; wander through the wonderful Kander Gorge into the Gasterntal, a magnificent, secluded glacial valley that is now a nature reserve; or walk up the Gemmi Pass to the hotel where Sherlock Holmes 'stayed' in one of Conan Doyle's famous books.

For something more leisurely, follow the 'cheese route' to Allmenalp to see how the holes are put into Swiss cheese in a traditional artisan factory, before sampling the finished product.

Day 3

Leaving Kandersteg, you have a choice of routes to reach Adelboden. The easier of the two leads along the west side of valley, passing the famous Blausee or 'Blue Lake' (small entrance fee payable locally) to reach Frutigen, where you catch the postbus to Adelboden (pay locally). A more challenging route leads up another valley for the steep but immensely rewarding ascent to the rocky Bunderchrinde Pass. Here, at over 2,000 metres, the views often stretch as far as distant Lake Thun, and you can look right along the Gasterntal glacial valley. In Adelboden you stay at the Hotel Adler for two nights. (15km, 4hrs or 18km, 6.5hrs)

Day 4

On your day in Adelboden we suggest a delightful circular walk that leads up and above the Engstlige Valley to the foot of the river's spectacular waterfalls, the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely picnic. You return along an attractive riverside path back to the village (12km, 4.5hrs). Alternatively, you may prefer to enjoy one of the many activities available in this lively village – hire mountain bikes or have a go on the electric flyer bikes! There are also tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool (as well as the indoor/outdoor pool at the hotel) and an indoor ice rink.

Day 5

From Adelboden, you ascend steadily to the summit of Sillerenbüel (1,977 metres) before dropping down to the Hahnenmoos Pass, where you are rewarded on a clear day with great views of the Wildstrubel Massif. You then descend towards Lenk across open meadows, enjoying views towards the mighty Gletscherhorn and Weisshorn peaks as well as the Plaine Morte glacier. As with all the walks on this holiday, it is possible to shorten the walk by taking a cable car or bus from one of several points along the route. In Lenk, you spend your final two nights at the Hotel Krone. (up to 14km, 7hrs)

Day 6

Lenk is a lovely mountain village and there are many options for walks straight from the centre of the village. Our recommended route is a mixture of high pastureland, waterfalls and striking alpine scenery. Heading south-east from Lenk, you ascend through farmland to reach the uplands of Metsch and ultimately Simmefäll, a powerful lower section of one of the falls, From here, follow the river’s course along the valley floor back to the village (up to 16km, 6hrs).
