This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel cycling, luggage transported
  • explore a little-known area of Tuscany
  • wide-open scenery, sandy beaches and rich history
  • accommodation of character, all with a pool

La Maremma in western Tuscany is one of the region’s quieter corners, an area of wild and unspoiled natural beauty where tranquillity reigns and you are never far from the sea. As you cross the broad plains, the stillness is at once striking and calming – more often than not the only sounds are the calls of birds, the rustling of leaves in the breeze and the turning of your bike’s wheels.

Crisscrossed by silent, winding roads that are perfect for two-wheeled exploration, La Maremma was once roamed by butteri (cowboys) and remains very much an agricultural area, noted for its wines and olive oil.

Tuscany is renowned for its hilltops crowned by medieval towns, but our routes in this little-known corner have been carefully researched to give you a good feel for La Maremma while avoiding the steeper climbs. Discover historic towns and villages such as Massa Marittima and Suvereto; the ruins of a city built by the mysterious Etruscans who held power here before the Romans; inviting beaches framed by pines; and the region’s excellent red wines and cuisine.
