Islands, Lighthouses & Memories

Southern Sardinia's islands & coastal plains

This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel cycling, luggage transported
  • fascinating islands to explore
  • wonderful coastal cycling
  • welcoming family-run hotels and good local food

The south-west corner of Sardinia is an oft-neglected area of this Mediterranean island that even many Italians do not know about. Largely unaffected by commercial interests, the local people quietly carry on their traditional pursuits and ways of life, much as they have done for generations. Nowhere sums this up more perfectly than the picturesque island of San Pietro (known as Caloforte), where bakeries, fishmongers and cake shops line the narrow cobbled streets, selling local delicacies straight from the oven.
Even Italians do not know about the island's secret coves or its yellow-sand beaches carved out of chunks of pink volcanic rock that rise up into dramatic cliffs to hold back the pulsating surf.

The Observer
Your discovery begins with an exploration of the idyllic islands of San Pietro and Sant’Antioco, where delicious seafood, and tuna in particular, is the order of the day. A causeway links Sant’Antioco to the mainland allowing you to continue your journey around the dramatic southern tip of Sardinia, staying at small welcoming hotels on the way, before you arrive in the bustling town of Pula.
