Read on to discover more of what Castile has to offer...

Awe-Inspiring Segovia

Segovia was once one of the most illustrious cities in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula. It is a UNESCO-listed cultural gem that remains delightfully off the tourist radar and richly repays exploration on foot. Wander the medieval back streets, gaze upwards in awe at soaring spires and the astonishing Roman aqueduct, and pay a visit to the ornate Alcázar where the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon came together, giving birth to ‘Spain’ itself. Treat yourselves too, perhaps, to the local delicacy, suckling pig, in one of the many traditional restaurants.

Hotel Rector, Salamanca

The Rector receives rave reviews from guests, and it’s easy to see why: the combination of sublime service, exquisite surroundings and a tranquil location on the edge of Salamanca’s historic quarter is very hard to beat. But venture beyond the hotel’s fabulous, historic façade and you’re in for even more of a treat: wander among the array of ornate, secular and religious buildings to be found within this prestigious seat of learning; climb great bell towers to admire the skyline; marvel at the cathedral’s intricate masonry; and relax over tapas in Plaza Mayor, one of the great central squares of Spain.

Madrid - Proud Centre of Spain

Madrid is the geographical and cultural beating heart of Spain – the country’s capital since the Golden Age. It’s here that many of Spain’s art treasures have come to rest, but there are also parks, extraordinary food, and some fascinating working neighbourhoods to enjoy. After dark, stumble into an intricately tiled tapas bar, indulge in traditional chocolate con churros, and seek out El Oso y El Madroño at Puerta del Sol. This 20-ton statue of a bear eating the fruit of the Madroño (strawberry tree) is the city’s most potent symbol, evoking a proud history as well as the indomitable spirit of the Madrileños themselves.

El Greco's Toledo

Prosperous Toledo was the capital of the Spanish Empire until the mid-16th century – a melting pot of Jewish, Muslim and Christian cultures that perfectly encapsulates all of Spain’s long and varied history. Cradled in a loop of the Tagus River, Toledo’s striking skyline was most famously captured by El Greco in one of his greatest works. Indeed, the paintings of this Renaissance artist, a champion of the Golden Age and long-time resident, are a highlight of any visit to the city.
