The Peloponnese, so lyrically described by its long-time resident and fervent admirer, the great travel writer ‘Paddy’ Leigh Fermor, remains something of a wild and enigmatic Greek beauty. It features some of the country’s most rugged and enticing landscapes, as well as many of its most magnificent ancient monuments. From the Gulf of Corinth to the Taÿgetos Mountains, and from the fertile Laconian plains of the south to the former Greek capital of Nafplion farther north, you are never far from a natural wonder or an historic gem. The scenic variety is astounding, and the sense of history that enriches the experience is, just as Fermor himself claimed, both “absorbing and rewarding”.

Read on to discover more of what the Peloponnese has to offer...

Byzantine Mystras & Ancient Sparta

Mystras is Greece’s best-preserved Byzantine city, and a wander around its ruins – there’s a castle and medieval houses, plus churches with beautiful wall paintings – fires the imagination and catapults the visitor back through the ages. So, too, does a stroll around nearby Sparta, and a visit to its archaeological and olive museums helps to complete a fascinating picture of life as it would have been in Laconia (one of the seven ancient Peloponnese provinces) during former times.

The Sacred 'Rock' of Monemvasia

The fortified town of Monemvasia, which lent its name to the Malvasia (‘Malmsey’) wine referred to by Shakespeare, is quite simply a wonderful place to stay. Moni Emvasis means ‘single entrance’, and the moment you arrive at this remarkable port protruding from the eastern Peloponnese, you will understand why: occupying a rocky outcrop that was severed from the mainland by a 4th-century earthquake, this strategically placed beauty has been ruled by Turks, Venetians, Byzantines and Francs; and, once the day-trippers have departed, you can have it more or less to yourselves.

Penetrate the Mani

The Mani was virtually inaccessible until fairly recently, and its ancient tower houses (pyrgospita) were almost as forbidding as the mountainous terrain. Memorably depicted by Patrick Leigh Fermor in his account of a hike across the Taÿgetos range, this ‘middle finger’ of the southern Peloponnese is now far easier to explore, especially by staying in the charming seaside town of Kardamili for a few days.

Iconic Olympia

No visit to the Peloponnese would be complete without pausing at Olympia, famed for impressive temples to Zeus and Hera, and for the simple stadium where the Olympic Games were born. As well as taking in the Olympic Museum and the park with a monument to Pierre de Coubertin, you can run the 193-metre track, imagining the cheering crowds as you cross the finishing line.

Nafplion, a Provincial Oasis

Nafplion has the feel of a provincial oasis – exuding a sense of civilised grandeur – and is home to important monuments befitting its status as Greece’s first capital. Admire the many ancient sites nearby and relax at your hotel, tucked beneath the Old Town’s medieval fortress. There is a rooftop café bar with sumptuous views, and you can sample homemade lemonade and marmalade, made fresh from the citrus groves owned by the family.
