  • visit the incredible ‘Rock Church’

Besides its pristine, natural attractions (think summer’s endless light stretching across epic forests and plateaux), Finland is also famed for its more human qualities. In particular, its streamlined and super-stylish sense of design.

Helsinki, the capital, is therefore one of the great trendsetting cities of Europe, and beyond its enticing bays and inlets bordering the Baltic Sea is an urban space full of style and panache. The celebrated ‘Design District’ bursts with boutiques, workshops and galleries, making this the epicentre of one of the world’s most electrifying design scenes.

On our self-guided walking tour, you can be wowed by design icons such as Iittala, Marimekko and Artek; but you can also take in a traditional kauppahalli (market hall), and admire the incredible, excavated Temppeliaukio (‘Rock Church’). You can also choose from a plentiful array of drinking and dining venues during your stay: the ‘new Suomi’ gastronomic scene is flourishing, and there are enough hip eateries, craft-beer bars and contemporary caf├ęs to keep the most ardent epicure entertained.

This is also a place where cultures collide: the city centre is a spectacular ensemble of both modern and stately architecture, and Uspenski Cathedral, the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe, wouldn’t look out of place in central Moscow. So it’s perhaps this combination of enduring icons and modern, quirky charms that defines Helsinki’s unique allure.
