A snow holiday in Pertisau -

ideal for non-skiers and skiers alike
Nestling on the shores of Lake Achensee, whose bright waters never entirely freeze, the Tyrolean village of Pertisau is an excellent, all-round snow destination. Small, but with shops and cafés, the village lies at the foot of the Karwendel Mountains; the winter walking and cross-country skiing options here are fabulous, while the downhill pistes are perfectly suited to beginners and families.
These are far from the only activities Pertisau has to offer, however – you’ll have the chance to enjoy a relaxed horse-drawn sleigh ride through the Karwendel Valleys; to strike out across virgin snow on a snowshoe hike; and to try out the local toboggan run. And then there’s the opportunity to visit postcard-pretty Innsbruck – a city that’s bursting with imperial history – or to take a cable car up one of Pertisau’s surrounding peaks for jaw-dropping views and delicious Tyrolean refreshments at an authentic mountain inn. The choice is endless.

The magnificent Wiesenhof is, deservedly, one of our most popular hotels, and earns the most consistently high levels of praise of any Inntravel hotel for the charming hospitality of English-speaking host Hansi Entner and his family. Winter activities

There’s no fixed itinerary, so take your pick of the activities as the mood takes you.
  • 65km around Pertisau; 150km in the Achensee region
    With a lake, mountains and two picturesque valleys on its doorstep, Pertisau is a winter walker’s paradise. We provide suggestions for five walks from the village itself – all of them accessible to walkers of average fitness – while further trails can be reached by public transport (use your visitor’s card for free local bus travel and discounted cable car tickets).

    All trails are well signed, and the snow specially flattened to facilitate walking. In the detailed documentation we provide, we give an overview of our favourite options, including the following three routes:

    Along the Falzthurn Valley: 14km
    This leisurely route starts from the hotel door and leads to the Gramaialm mountain inn, which enjoys a superb setting amid the Karwendel Alpine Park nature reserve. We highly recommend pausing here for refreshments before making your way back to the village.

    The Panoramaweg: 9km
    This linear route certainly lives up to its name – it affords fine lake views as it ascends to a height of 1,000 metres, before crossing snow-covered woodland and dropping down to the lakeside. Return to Pertisau by bus.

    Pretty Gern Valley: 11km
    It’s a joy to traverse the delightful Gerntal on foot, and your reward for reaching the valley’s end is a traditional Tyrolean lunch at the highly regarded Gern Alm mountain inn.

  • 201km of trails in the Achensee region; best suited to beginners & intermediates
    Access to Pertisau’s cross-country trails couldn’t be easier – they start right behind the hotel and lead across snowy meadows and through the trees to reach the valleys that radiate out from the village. These trails form part of a wider local network, across which travel is free of charge with your visitor’s card. This card also includes access to the trails themselves; view the regional trail map here.

    The terrain close to the lake is home to gentle, undulating trails; for more of a challenge, take one of the routes into the surrounding valleys. Here are some of our favourite options:

    Panorama trail from Pertisau to Maurach: 3.5km
    This lovely trail begins in the meadow behind the hotel and, as its name suggests, follows a scenic route alongside the lake to reach the neighbouring village of Maurach. There is the option to return via the same route; alternatively make use of the regular local bus service.

    Along the Falzhurn Valley: 14km
    Follow the river through the Falzhurn Valley on this pleasant, undulating route. If you choose to complete the full, circular trail – by skiing out along one side of the valley and back along the other – be sure to break for refreshments at the Gramaialm mountain inn, situated at the head of the valley. If you would prefer a shorter day, simply turn back whenever you’re ready to return to the hotel.

    Into the Tristenau Valley: 7km
    A personal favourite of Christoph Leithner, who owns and runs the local ski school, this trail offers more of a challenge, climbing steadily through the trees to a height of 1,150 metres. The valley it explores is beautiful and serene, and though there are no refreshment options here, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the solitude and stillness of the mountains.

  • Snowshoeing, horse-drawn sleigh rides & more
    There are many other ways to enjoy the snow – a whole host of winter activities are available locally, with the hotel itself offering a varied programme.

    Horse-drawn sleigh rides
    A particularly beautiful way to view Pertisau’s magnificent wintry scenery is by horse-drawn sleigh. Not only does this relaxing experience give you time to appreciate the finer detail of your surroundings, it’s also an excellent opportunity to find out more about the area.

    Snowshoeing
    This easy-to-learn activity is perfect for anyone looking to escape the beaten track. Once you’ve mastered the basics – essentially, once you have adjusted to wearing the broad shoes – you have complete freedom to explore, choosing whether to remain on the prepared trails or to make use of the snowshoes’ firm grip and head ‘off-piste’. If you would prefer to hike with a guide, this can be organised through the local ski school.

    Downhill skiing
    If you’ve always wanted to give downhill skiing a try, Pertisau is a great place to do it. For one thing, the pistes are virtually on your doorstep – the ski lifts are just 300 metres from the hotel – and they are also ideally suited to beginners and families. The 14 kilometres of pistes in the village are complemented by a further 34 kilometres in the wider Achensee region (accessible by free ski bus).

    Tobogganing
    It’s hard to beat the thrill of whizzing down the mountainside on a toboggan, and Pertisau’s illuminated 1.5-kilometre run can be enjoyed at any time of day. The run can be reached on foot or by an hourly tractor transfer, and has an adjoining mountain inn offering regional cooking and warming drinks.

  • Innsbruck & more
    From imperial cities to interactive museums, there’s more to the Tyrol than snow-covered scenery…

    Innsbruck
    Take the bus and train (pay locally for the latter) to Innsbruck, where we provide notes for a self-guided city walking tour. With the Dolomites to the south and the Tyrolean peaks to the north and west, this fairy-tale city boasts a splendid mountain panorama. Admire the Baroque façades of the houses lining Herzog Friedrich Strasse, and do not miss the Imperial Palace and the beautiful Goldenes Dachl ('Golden Roof'), an extraordinary Gothic bay window with 2,657 gilded copper tiles dating from the rule of Emperor Maximilian I.

    Rofanspitze
    For another highly enjoyable day out, we suggest taking the bus to nearby Maurach, from where you can ascend the Rofanspitze by cable car. At 2,259 metres high, this imposing peak offers a breathtaking panorama over both its immediate surrounds and a number of more distant mountain ranges; there is a choice of places to eat close to the summit, as well as an easy, 1.6-kilometre winter walking trail to follow. For a real adrenalin rush, however, have a go on the Air Rofan Skyglider – accessed from the top of the cable car station, it reaches speeds of 85 kilometres/hour, and affords the most incredible views.

    Karwendel Gondola
    It is also worth taking a trip in the local Karwendel gondola – passengers are transported up to the Zwölferkopf, from where they can soak in the sweeping views over the lake, village and surrounding mountains. The Karwendel Alpine Inn is located here, too, and is renowned for its homemade Kaiserschmarrn, a popular Austrian dessert that owes its intriguing name (‘Emperor’s Mess’) to Franz Josef I, an Austro-Hungarian emperor who is said to have been particularly fond of this sweet, shredded pancake.

    Tiroler Steinöl
    In addition to providing the village’s dramatic backdrop, the Karwendel Mountains are also the source of Pertisau’s ‘elixir’. This comes in the form of Tyrolean shale oil (Tiroler Steinöl), which has been mined from the mountains since 1902 and is unique to Lake Achensee. Products made from the oil are known for their natural healing properties and are used in the hotel spa and available in the hotel bathrooms. To learn more about the history of shale oil mining, and the health benefits of the products, visit the village’s interactive museum, housed in an impressive glass building whose pyramidal shape is intended to symbolise the Karwendel Mountains.

  • An ideal family destination
    Despite being a 4-star superior hotel, the Wiesenhof is extremely child-friendly. The bedrooms are large, with space for additional beds, and there are also several dedicated family rooms. The 25-metre indoor pool – the largest hotel pool in the region – is much-loved by children of all ages. The hotel also excels when it comes to mealtimes – the breakfasts are extensive and varied, with an equally wide choice available in the evenings.

    If you can persuade the children to leave the pool, Pertisau is an excellent place to learn how to downhill and cross-country ski. The ski school is situated just 300 metres from the hotel, and offers children’s lessons to all those aged between 3-12 years. The experienced instructors make the lessons fun by centring these around Bobo the penguin, the school’s playful mascot.

  • Special events
    Christmas is celebrated with traditional Austrian gala dinners and festive activities for all the family. At New Year, there is a celebratory dinner, followed by fireworks in the village at midnight.
 

Where you stay

Set on the south-western shore, Pertisau (altitude: 952m) is one of the main villages on Achensee which, at 9km long by 1km wide, is the largest lake in the Austrian Tyrol. Although small, Pertisau offers a good range of facilities, including a post office, a bank, sports and souvenir shops, several restaurants and a number of bars and cafés. Pertisau was a favoured holiday spot for Emperor Maximillian I (1490–1519), who built a country residence here, and the village remained the preferred hunting and fishing ground for many Habsburgs until the early 20th century.

PLEASE NOTE: most beds in Austrian hotels are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. We refer to these as 'Austrian Twins' and they are locally regarded to serve requests for both double and twin-bedded rooms. Separate twin beds or traditional double beds with one large mattress are rare and cannot be guaranteed.

  • Choose a leisurely route on Austria’s NightJet sleeper train. Leaving London on a weekday, you can reach Pertisau with just one change of train in Amsterdam. Enjoy dinner in this vibrant city before boarding the sleeper, then wake up refreshed in Austria for a short transfer to your hotel.

    Leaving London on weekends when the direct London–Amsterdam Eurostar is not running, you can take a route via Brussels to Cologne, where you can have dinner by the Rhine before joining the sleeper.

    We have based our prices (which include continental breakfast and a private 2-berth cabin with 2 bunk beds and a washbasin on the sleeper train) on the routes we recommend below, but our rail specialists can tailor the arrangements to suit you and provide a quotation.

    One alternative, for example, is to take high-speed trains to Zürich and stay overnight. The following morning, watch spectacular mountain scenery unfold as you travel through the Arlberg Pass into Austria. Another option would be to take the sleeper route to Austria, and return via Zürich.

    Inntravel offer exceptional service, nothing was too much trouble, very organised and our holiday went like clockwork. From the initial enquiry to us returning a week later. The information booklet sent several weeks prior to departure was brilliant and very informative. One of the best I have ever received pre holiday.

    Hotel Weisenhof was wonderful and the cuisine a real highlight.Incredible meals and consistently of a high standard. Beautiful spa and swimming pool, perfect addition to our winter snow walking week. I highly recommend this hotel and will definitely be returning.

    We had an excellent week in Pertisau at the Wiesenhof. We were blessed with snow on our first 2 days and some glorious blue skies for the rest of the week; could not have asked for better! The walking was fantastic - fabulous scenery and easy to follow routes to some charming mountain inns. Plenty to keep us occupied for the week. The Wiesenhof Hotel was a great choice. Well located, super room, lovely food, charming staff and large pool and spa area which were spotlessly clean and well maintained. We had chosen a south facing room which had a good seating area in the sunshine and despite not having a balcony did have french windows which opened inwards to allow the outside to come inside! The pool and spa areas were a welcome addition and when we were there in late February not at all busy, although it's helpful to book massages in advance as the 4-6pm pre dinner slots quickly fill up! It was great to have a relax there after a days walking.

    Wonderful holiday in Hotel Wiesenhof, Pertisau. Amazing food and friendly helpful staff. We had a choice of downhill skiing, cross country skiing,  tobogganing and hiking, as well as the hotel pool, sauna and spa. I liked getting a daily newsletter at breakfast with local events. We also did snow tubing one evening which was great fun!

    The pool at the Wiesenhof hotel was wonderful, perfect for relaxing or for getting in some laps. Couldn't smell a whiff of chlorine so I don't know what method they were using to keep it so beautifully clean. The hotel was decorated so elegantly, nothing fussy or old fashioned about it but still warm and welcoming. Great food that kept us very well fuelled for our busy days. The Night Jet is wonderful if you're a fan of sleeping on a train. Pretty cramped for space when you factor in luggage but very comfortable and clean. The 'light' breakfast was about twice the amount I was expecting, more than enough!

    Tip: take plenty of cash as none of the cafes, shops or even post offices we visited would take card payment, quite a contrast to the UK where we have become accustomed to not using cash. The loipes are best enjoyed first thing before the large groups start!

    The Wiesenhof did not disappoint, we last visited 9 yrs ago and since then they have had a wonderful 25m swimming pool installed, and we frequently had it to ourselves. We were able to walk some of the bergweg routes as well as the prepared winter walks.

    We have decided not to fly to reduce our carbon footprint and recommend the train journey experience as part of the holiday.

    This was our second holiday at the Wiesenhof and once again the Entner family and their team were very welcoming and friendly. There was limited cross country skiing due to the lack of snow, but one short trail was maintained, so we were able to do some skiing during our stay, and there are plenty of other activities in the area. We travelled by train this time, which was a straightforward and good alternative to flying.

    A lovely holiday in Pertisau. The hotel is welcoming and comfortable with great food with plenty of choice. The pool and spa are exceptional. We enjoyed the cross country skiing, which is very accessible from the hotel, and also the other activities including winter walking, snow shoeing and tobogganing.

    Not a fault...merely an observation in that the resort isn't experienced in english tourists. Don't expect everyone to speak English. All guided snowshoe walks from village shop are in german, no English spoken. Only one real supermarket in the town, couple of other grocery stores close at lunch time. Snowshoe walks not obvious or plentiful but there are other snowy walking routes...snowshoes not required. Tourist information office closes at lunchtime.

    This is probably the best winter holiday we have experienced. The area is so beautiful and very picturesque. The walking routes are ploughed every day and the way marking is clear. There are numerous huts and restaurants to have drinks and food. The hotel is amazing. Lovely personal experience. The staff, accommodation and food are incredible. The swimming and spa is a great way to end your walks in the clean air. To complete your day, you have a five course meal, of the highest standards, to look forward to. I could not fault this holiday experience and would highly recommend.

    Just returned from Austria and wow what a holiday!!

    We were a bit worried as the restrictions in Austria meant our 13 year old daughter had to still test (3 times during the stay) but Inntravel gave us all of the information we needed and the hotel were great.

    The tests were at the hotel and they even dropped off the PCR for us at the next town as we didn't have a car!!

    It's our first holiday booking through Inntravel but it won't be our last.

    They seem to really know their market and all elements of the trip were seamless and organised extremely well.

    Thank you Inntravel for making our first post-covid trip a memorable one.

    Pertisau is an excellent location for winter walking. Paths up the valleys are well cleared and the mountain huts are very good for lunches, gluhwein and hot chocolate with rum!  Gondolas up the Karwendel and Rofan are a must and give access to good circular routes at the top. Free trips on bus services are very good. Food at the hotel is superb and plentiful, with very attentive and friendly staff.

    We had a wonderful time, first trip abroad in 2 years was special. Everything about the hotel Wiesenhof was excellent - from reception, the friendly bar, amazing food, comfortable spacious room with a view of the lake, the pool, use of walking poles and toboggans - the 1.5km toboggan run was so much fun (even for oldies like us). Nothing was too much trouble for staff who spoke excellent English - unlike our German, sadly! The local winter walking trails make for a winter wonderland, especially if you have fresh snow and the mountain inns are a welcome break! Just be aware some of the signage can be confusing - I'd recommend starting all (apart from lakeside/Maurach walk) from the cross country centre. The trip in the gondola from Maurach up the Rofanspitze and a walk is a must do. It's not a long or arduous walk but the view from the top is stunning. We added an Innsbruck stay at the end which was well worth doing for a short city break with plenty to see and do and choice of places to eat and drink. In some respects if we did this again I'd do Innsbruck first, then the snowy part of the holiday which was really the highlight. I'd thoroughly recommend this package to anyone who wants a peaceful, relaxing, get away from it all holiday in the snow. Inntravel, you work so hard to find these amazing places and your organisation and customer service is brilliant. Your understanding of the concerns around Covid and payment dates and travel restrictions meant we had to change from rail travel to air but it worked really well and now we have more lovely memories and many, many photos to remind us. Thank you!

    A fantastic holiday, everything went smoothly from start to finish. The hotel was suberb, staff friendly and welcoming, food amazing.  Great fun walking the snow trails and even tobogganing.

    Despite the drawbacks with the room and the loss of £40 due to the incorrect departure information it was an enjoyable holiday. The area is lovely, the hotel is good, the staff friendly and the other guests were very nice. There is plenty to do and travelling to Innsbruck or further afield if you choose is easy

    The Hotel Wiesenhof is particularly well-suited for young families. The owners have gone to great lengths to provide everything a child could ask for. The resort of Pertisau is delightful but it probably would appeal less to young people looking for an exciting night-life. Personal highlights: long cross country ski routes, on well-maintained pistes, up quiet valleys with few other skiers in sight; taking the grandchildren up in the cable car and then tobogganing down with them to the valley bottom. Even in poor weather, the extensive spa, pools and gym satisfy those wanting a bit of exercise/relaxation.

  • They are two mattresses (each with separate bedding) on one large base. They are locally regarded to serve requests for both double and twin bedded rooms. Separate twin beds or traditional double beds with one large mattress are rare and cannot be guaranteed.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

    Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

    When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Austria, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.
