Gateway to the Amalfi Coast
Overlooking the blue, sparkling waters of the Bay of Naples, elegant Sorrento is a delight. Spend your days soaking up its southern charm; take the train to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum; or enjoy a walk on the island of Capri.

Holiday information

Sublime Sorrento

A magnet for poets, artists and aristocrats over the centuries, Sorrento continues to attract visitors from around the world with its fascinating history and heritage; its sunny coastline and glamorous lifestyle; its elegant buildings and parks; its sunset views; and, of course, the natural beauty of its peninsula, with the dramatic backdrop of Mount Vesuvius.
From the comfort of your hotel, you’re perfectly positioned to savour the many delights of this alluring town; to catch the train to nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum; or take a boat across the Bay of Naples to visit the idyllic isles of Capri and Ischia.

  • Positano to Sorrento: 45mins by taxi
Today you are transferred by taxi from Positano to Sorrento, where you stay at the boutique Hotel Helios.

You may choose to spend the rest of the day relaxing, either at the hotel or on one of the small bathing platforms (there are a couple in Sorrento itself, as well as others a short bus ride away). There’s plenty to see in the town, too – the pretty, pastel-coloured Marina Grande, the old fishing port; the 14th-century cathedral, the Monastery of San Francesco, with its tranquil cloisters and gardens; an art museum; and the park of Villa Communale which has a spectacular view of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Sorrento also has many small antique dealers and a variety of shops selling local handicrafts, as well as a tempting array of restaurants and some exceptional gelaterie. To stretch your legs, follow our notes for a short walk to Capo di Sorrento:

Linear walk via Capo di Sorrento (return by bus): 4km, 2hrs; ascent 245m / descent 215m
This easy stroll from the hotel takes you inland and around to the rocky coves of Capo di Sorrento, a captivating headland with a perfectly formed natural pool. The splendid villa of the Roman noble Pollio Felice once stood on the rocks here, and the pool was a favourite of Queen Giovanna D’Angiò, who lived here during the golden years of her reign (1371-1435).
  • Pompeii, Herculaneum & Capri
An excellent way to explore the area around Sorrento is by train. The local railway calls at Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples, all of which make for intriguing day trips. You could also take a boat to the isles of Ischia and Procida, or to beautiful Capri, where we suggest a route that explores the island’s quieter western coastline.
    Circular walk on Capri: 8km, 3.5hrs; ascent 250m / descent 510m
The walk starts from Anacapri, itself a delightful town to explore. It then drops slowly to the rocky western coast to follow an informative nature trail (in English) across cliffs and scrub-covered rocks, passing a number of small coastal forts dating from the early 19th century, and terminating near the Blue Grotto, which can be visited via small rowing boats. A public bus service operates from here back to the starting point in Anacapri.

The delightful Hotel Helios makes a great base from which to explore Sorrento.
