Holiday information

Scenic Kandersteg

In beautiful Kandersteg you’re spoiled for choice with a variety of walking routes to suit your mood, ability or the weather. Perhaps start with a stroll along the picturesque shores of Oeschinensee – this emerald lake is arguably Switzerland’s most exquisite, as well as one of the jewels of the Bernese Oberland, set in an amphitheatre of mountains which at points rise sheer from its waters.
Slightly further afield, the secluded Gastern valley offers more spectacular walking in tranquil surroundings, and there’s also the option to enjoy a fantastic, high-level route to the Gemmi Pass. The contrast to all this activity is found back at your hotel where you can relax in the swimming pool, with its panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, and enjoy delicious, traditional cuisine.

  • Weggis to Kandersteg: 3.5hrs by boat & rail
You arrive into the village of Kandersteg after a scenic half-day journey by boat and train from Weggis. Situated at an altitude of 1200 metres, this pretty village is surrounded by an impressive ring of high mountains. Once you’ve settled in at your hotel, you may like to explore the village before dinner or perhaps take a short walk along the shores of Lake Oeschinen (see route options for days 7-8 below).
  • Choice of walks from Kandersteg: 7km to 22km
The mountains around Kandersteg are a paradise for walkers and we offer a number of different options for your time here.

    Oeschinensee – grade 2 option: 7km, 2hrs; ascent 40m/descent 550m
For a leisurely introductory walk, we recommend exploring the shores of beautiful Lake Oeschinen, reached by gondola.
    Oeschinensee – grade 3 option: 12km, 4.5hrs; ascent 530m/descent 1000m
For something more strenuous, ascend into the mountains which surround the lake for superb views over its turquoise waters.
    Gasterntal – grade 2 option: 22km, 6.5hrs; ascent/descent 700m
Just as worthy of discovery is the tranquil and secluded Gastern Valley. Now a nature reserve, it is renowned as the glacial valley in the Bernese Oberland. There is a bus that you can take to the entrance of the spectacular Kander Gorge, which you traverse before emerging into the Gastern Valley, passing numerous waterfalls en route to its far reaches. You return by following the River Kander downstream.
    Gasterntal – grade 3 option: 11km, 5hrs; ascent/descent 900m
Another way to enjoy the reserve is to take a bus further into the valley, then follow an out-and-back route which winds steeply uphill, gaining some 1,000 metres of altitude, to reach the blue ice of the Kanderfirn Glacier.
    Gemmi Pass – grade 3: 20km, 6.5hrs; ascent/descent 900m; shorter option: 9km, 3hrs
Or you may decide to follow in the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes and head up onto the Gemmi Pass (2,346 metres), the former link between the Bernese Oberland and the Valais to the south. You start by taking a bus and a cable car to Sunnbüel, then ascend through glorious alpine scenery. From the panoramic pass you return on foot to Sunnbüel via the western shore of Daubensee (or if you don’t wish to walk any further, you can use a combination of cable car, bus and train to return to Kandersteg from the pass).

Your hotel in Kandersteg is truly outstanding, and one we have worked with for many years.
