Holiday information

Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours, Zermatt and the Matterhorn, the Goms is an idyllic and unspoiled valley surrounded by mighty mountain peaks. Travel back in time with a visit to its medieval villages, home to onion-domed churches and ancient wooden houses blackened by the sun, and take a heritage steam train over a scenic mountain pass. From your hotel set above the characterful village of Blitzingen, you are also well placed to access several great walking trails, and will end each day with an outstanding four-course dinner in the highly acclaimed hotel restaurant.

  • Ride the Glacier Express
Today begins with a short bus ride from Sils to St Moritz, where you board the world-famous Glacier Express for the fantastic rail journey to Andermatt, just a short hop by local train from Blitzingen.

A 4-course dinner is included tonight and each night of your stay here, and is likely to be one of the highlights of your holiday. The hotel owner, Peter, is a highly accomplished chef, with an excellent reputation for regional dishes and a current score of 16 (out of a maximum of 20) points in the Gault Millau guide.
  • Explore the Goms Valley
This relatively quiet valley is a delight to explore, either on foot or by using the local trains which run up and down the valley floor. We provide a variety of suggestions for your two days here, from panoramic glacier walks to a trip on a heritage steam railway and an exploration of the valley’s charming villages.
    The Aletsch Glacier
At 23 kilometres long and covering an area of 120 square kilometres, the UNESCO-protected Aletsch Glacier is the largest in the Alps. A trip by train and cable car to the Eggishorn viewpoint at 2927 metres offers awe-inspiring views over the glacier and surrounding peaks, and we also suggest a highly scenic walk from the summit.
    Furka railway
From the village of Oberwald at the end of the valley it is possible to catch a heritage steam train over the Furka Pass. Rising to 2160 metres, this is the second highest rail crossing in Europe, and provides a magnificent panorama over the Rhône Glacier.
    Medieval villages
Blitzingen itself is a charming medieval village in a valley that has historically been characterised by a tremendous independence of spirit, partly because of the isolation of long, hard winters. This and other villages still display a unique character, their solid wooden houses surrounding onion-domed churches. You may also like to visit Münster, surrounded by the great glaciers of the Rhône and Aletsch, or Niederwald, with neat rows of houses set above one another on a steep slope.
    The Binntal Valley
This is a peaceful place, full of flowers and small farms, and known for its geological extravaganza of unusual rocks. You’ll need to take a bus and train to get here, but the journey is tranquil and uncrowded, and the destination well worth it. The walking is on good, rocky paths for as far up the valley as you wish, returning via the other side which is completely different in character.

Attentive service, comfortable and spacious bedrooms, and superb cuisine await at the excellent Hotel Castle in Blitzingen.
