Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the most extraordinary of all European cities, full of interest and Mediterranean bustle, and riding high in civic and national pride. Discover the extraordinary architectural heritage of Gaudí, the tapas bars of the old town, or enjoy the nightly promenade along the Ramblas.
As far as European cities go, Barcelona ticks more boxes than most and were the Catalans to get their way, and gain independence, they have, in Barcelona, a truly exceptional capital-in-waiting. Barcelona is a fascinating, vibrant and ebullient city. It is dominated by Gaudí's extraordinary masterpiece, La Sagrada Familia, begun in 1883 and due to be completed in 2026 (allegedly!), and the many modernist works of art that can be found on Barcelona's wide streets give the city a unique atmosphere and flavour.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • An introduction
Barcelona, unlike many European capitals, does not have a long list of must-visit museums or monuments; the city itself is the star attraction, in fact much of the city has been described as an open-air museum. It rejoices in a wealth of extraordinary architectural features, most notably the works of famous architect, Antonio Gaudí. Here are just a few highlights:

    • Don't miss – how could you! – La Sagrada Familia, the great church whose foundations were laid in 1883 and which, in the tradition of great places of worship, is still unfinished over a century later. Take the lift up the tower for superb city views.

    • The Museu d’Historia de la Ciutat, a fascinating museum on the Plaça del Rei that traces the history of the city, including its Roman origins.

    • The Picasso Museum, in what is considered to be the artist's home city, is housed in five medieval stone mansions and contains one of the most extensive collections of artworks by Picasso.

    • Las Ramblas/La Rambla is the world famous promenade that meanders from Plaça Catalunya through the heart of the old town to meet the sea at the towering statue of Cristobal Colón (Christopher Columbus). Mingle with the crowds and enjoy the atmosphere of what has been described as “the greatest free show in Europe”.
  • Discover Barcelona on our self-guided walking tours
We include notes for two very different walking tours: the first covers all the city’s key highlights, and takes up to a full day to complete (although it can also be enjoyed in sections); while the second, shorter tour visits an authentically local neighbourhood that few tourists get to see.

Please note that many museums, galleries and restaurants tend to close on at least one day of the week – we provide further details in our tour information.

    Barcelona highlights
From Roman ruins to Gothic masterpieces, and from famous food markets to the most exquisite places to go for tapas, our first walking tour is packed full of Barcelona’s greatest hits – as well as our recommendations of how best to enjoy them. The tour begins in Plaça Catalunya, and takes you first into one of the oldest parts of the city, El Raval, now known for its bohemian vibe and two museums of contemporary art. Next up is the Gothic quarter – Barcelona’s historic soul – where we suggest combining visits to the impressive cathedral and Medieval Jewish neighbourhood with a foray down the city’s ‘chocolate street’. It is also here that you’ll find one of our favourite tapas restaurants, as well as a rather wonderful bar that specialises in mouthwatering anchovies and glasses of sparkling wine. The final part of the tour is very much about 'the people's Barcelona', and features such sights as the monument to the Catalan fallen of 1714 and the Picasso Museum.

    The “village” of Gràcia
For centuries, Gràcia was a self-governed town to Barcelona’s north, and its residents still hold to their traditional, independent roots. Our tour delves into the everyday life of this authentic district, while also giving you the option to visit one of the city’s best-known landmarks: the magnificent Sagrada Familia. We also explore the fascinating Eixample – a “new” area of the city developed in the late 19th century, and which is home to some fabulous Modernist architecture, as well as exclusive shops and restaurants.
