The Heart of ItalyTuscany, Umbria & Emilia RomagnaA Stroll through History
This truly fascinating walk leads from Umbria, across Lazio and into Tuscany, revealing a little-known corner of Italy that is steeped in history. It was here that the enigmatic Etruscans settled in the 9th century BC, and as you follow our gentle routes across the timeless landscape of fertile agricultural land, ancient woodland, olive groves, volcanic lakes and narrow valleys, you have plenty of time to admire some of the many marks they left on the land: necropolises hewn from the rock, walled towns and ravine-like sunken lanes.
From the Tuscan Hills to the Sea
This holiday is a rewarding and very varied journey to the sea. Starting in the secret hills of western Tuscany, you descend to the plain and cross this to reach the coast. You then continue beyond the wild but immensely beautiful Argentario Peninsula to finish on Giglio Island, where wooded slopes frame near-deserted beaches of white sand washed by the warm Tirrenian Sea.
Hill-Top Towns of Tuscany
Grade 1-2 7 nights classic route in timeless countryside plenty of time for cultural visits Walk from the Etruscan town of Volterra through the Chianti vineyards and San Gimignano to the Sienese hills and Siena itself. The walking is leisurely, with some long sections, and you have plenty of time to explore these wonderful hill-top towns. Stay in good-quality hotels and enjoy typical Tuscan specialties, to be washed down, of course, with hearty Chianti. The Tuscan Heartland
Revealing the Crete Senesi, the less visited area to the south of Siena, this is a discovery of classic Tuscan landscapes – lyrical, timeless scenery of cypress trees, olive groves, vineyards, expanses of sunflowers and fields of wheat that create a rich patchwork of colours. There are chances for sightseeing (you pass through several medieval villages and can visit the handsome monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, famed for its frescoes) – and for wine-tasting. In the Footsteps of Perugino
Perugino's Umbria is a land of gentle hills coated with olive and oak trees, of beautiful medieval villages and of wide-open views. Our walk leads through landscapes immortalised in the works of this great artist, passing through the picturesque villages in which Perugino left his mark so that you can see for yourself how little the scenery has changed over the centuries. Stay in 3- and 4-star hotels and enjoy earthy Umbrian cuisine. Umbria - Italy's Green Heart
Grade 2-3 7 nights lush, green countryside Romanesque churches & abbeys Umbria is a very lush, unspoiled area of central Italy, dotted with beautiful abbeys and churches. Starting from the atmospheric medieval town of Spoleto, the route takes you up through the wooded valley of Valnerina into the dramatic Monti Sibillini National Park. You stay in comfortable, friendly inns, where you can savour local specialities and dishes based around black truffles. The Secret Apennines
Grade 2-3 7 nights warmest of welcomes in undiscovered villages superb walking The Apennines offer some of Italy's best walking, especially in the Corno alle Scale Regional Park, rich in flora and fauna, where inviting paths lead up through woodland of beech, oak and chestnut, and along valleys to the high mountains. Our chosen inns earn high praise, not least for a regional cuisine of pasta, cured meats, fish from the rivers, and, in season, wild mushrooms, truffles and chestnuts. Apennines to Tuscany (exclusive to the website)
This route is a wonderful transition from the rugged Apennine peaks to Tuscany's gently rolling, Mediterranean hills coated in vineyards and crowned with hill-top villages. As the countryside gradually opens up, you are rewarded with sweeping views back to the Apennines and over the timeless Tuscan landscapes. Stay in traditional, genuinely welcoming hotels, and enjoy tasty regional dishes. From Bologna to Florence
For a really rewarding holiday with a strong sense of journey, choose this walk between two of Italy's greatest cities. Linking the two is a series of mule paths and other ancient trails that together form the 'path of the gods'. Dotted with traditional wayside inns, the route, parts of which are still cobbled, leads through beech woods and along broad, grassy ridges with sweeping views. > Walking holidays in Piedmont, Liguria, Lakes & Dolomites ![]() |
