France - Coast & VineyardsLoire, Brittany & CataloniaChâteaux & Vineyards
The area to the west of Tours boasts several of the Loire valley's most famous – and most romantic – châteaux: Azay-le-Rideau, Ussé and Chinon, all of which you can visit on this holiday, as well as vineyards, troglodytic dwellings and the famous abbey at Fontevraud. The walking, accessible to all, is relaxed and leisurely, with easy routes through vineyards, rolling farmland and hunting forests.
The Granite Coast of Brittany
This splendid walking route is a discovery of the rocky coast of northern Brittany, passing through bustling fishing ports and stone hamlets. Walk past the pink granite rocks weathered into weird and wonderful shapes that give the coast its name, and, at the end of the route, along sandy bays ideal for summer swims. You stay in an attractive mix of hotels and a lovely chambres d'hôtes (guesthouses), with the chance to sample delicious fish and seafood dishes.
Collioure to Cadaqués
Bathed in warm Mediterranean sunshine, and with the final peaks of the Pyrenees providing a dramatic backdrop, the coast either side of the Franco-Spanish border invites exploration on foot. The journey begins in French Catalonia, in Collioure, the jewel of the Côte Vermeille, from where you head south, enjoying some fine coastal walks and staying in comfortable, 3-star hotels to finish in Cadaqués, another charming fishing village.
