Day 1: we highly recommend that you catch a bus to Montepertuso (pay locally) and walk back to Positano along the truly awe-inspiring 'path of the gods' across the high, open mountainside, giving you the feeling of being on top of the world. (12km, 4hrs) Accommodation: Buca di Bacco, as above. Day 2: after a short transfer you enjoy a scenic walk across the inland hills, with far-reaching views in clear weather across the bay to Vesuvius. Your path leads through olive groves and orchards to reach Marina del Cantone. (10km, 3.5hrs) Accommodation: Hotel delle Sirene (3*), Marina del Cantone. This friendly hotel is located right by the sea, with a seafront restaurant and its own beach for guests use. Marinella Caputo is a wonderful host and a great cook too her antipasti are particularly delicious. Bedrooms at the front of the hotel enjoy sea views, while those at the back have a terrace or balcony. Day 3: today we recommend that you take the opportunity to visit the peninsulas westernmost point, Punta Campanella, separated by just 3 miles of water from Capri. Both our suggested routes start with a bus ride to Termini (pay locally), after which you can choose from a relaxed 8-kilometre route that descends gently through the western foothills of Mount San Costanzo to the lighthouse, or a challenging 11-kilometre walk via the panoramic summit of Mount San Costanzo that descends steeply along the ridge to the headland. For a much easier day, from Marina del Cantone you can stroll around the nearby headland, past a Saracen watchtower, to the characteristic cove of Recommone, where you can have lunch at the coves restaurant (pay locally). Alternatively, you could join one of the boat trips along the coast organised by Marinellas husband (pay locally). Accommodation: Hotel delle Sirene, as above. Day 4: this is a varied walk that leads northwards across the Sorrento Peninsula along mule tracks, paved paths and quiet lanes through gently rolling hills coated with olive and citrus groves, pine woods and stands of carob trees. You walk through several pretty villages with beautiful churches boasting magnificent tiled floors, and also pass various viewpoints, some of which look across to Naples and Mount Vesuvius in clear weather. As you approach the northern coast, you enjoy a real sense of completion to finally arrive at the famous Grand Tour resort of Sorrento. (15km, 5hrs) Accommodation: Hotel Antiche Mura (4*), Sorrento. This is a handsome hotel decorated with great style and elegance. Located centrally, near Piazza Tasso, it is built on the site of the old town walls (hence the name), parts of which can still be seen in the peaceful gardens, which boast a pool. We include rooms with a balcony. You stay on a bed and breakfast basis, leaving you free to take your pick of the town's restaurants. Day 5: for a final walk, take a boat (pay locally) to Capri, where we suggest a route that reveals the island's rugged cliffs and quiet, pine-clad corners. (10km, 3hrs) Accommodation: Hotel Antiche Mura, as above. Day 6: spend your last day relaxing, either in the hotel gardens or on one of the small beaches (there are a couple in Sorrento itself, as well as some others within a short bus ride). You could also take a boat trip (pay locally) some companies offer excursions around the peninsula while others offer trips to the islands of Ischia and Procida. Accommodation: Hotel Antiche Mura, as above. Walking chart: the chart gives the distance and an approximation of the ascents and descents involved each day. Recommendations for extra nights: Hotel delle Sirene (Marina del Cantone) is a good choice, giving you the chance to walk to Punta Campanella on one day and to take a boat trip along the coast on the other.
