The Sorrento Peninsula

Around the cape to elegant Sorrento

Drawn by the bright Mediterranean sunshine and the dramatic fusion of mountains and sea, visitors have been coming to the Amalfi Coast since the days of the Grand Tour. West of Amalfi, mountains, coves and villages continue to alternate to Punta Campanella, the peninsula’s westernmost point, which stretches out into the sea towards the island of Capri. Beyond this rugged cape, on the northern side of the peninsula, Sorrento, to this day exuding the same charm and elegance that the Victorians so loved, looks across the Bay of Naples. Complementing our Amalfi Coast & Villages walk, this is a wonderful discovery of the western part of the Amalfi Coast, rewarding you with new views with every twist of the path as you journey around the peninsula – mountains plunging into the sea, the rugged Lattari peaks, the island of Capri, and across the Bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius. You can combine both walks to make a wonderful 13 day Amalfi Coast Discovery holiday.

Starting point: Buca di Bacco (4*), Positano. This is a high-quality hotel offering professional yet very friendly service. We include sea view rooms. Your stay is on a bed and breakfast basis, leaving you free to take your pick of the resort’s many seafood restaurants.

Day 1: we highly recommend that you catch a bus to Montepertuso (pay locally) and walk back to Positano along the truly awe-inspiring 'path of the gods' across the high, open mountainside, giving you the feeling of being on top of the world. (12km, 4hrs)

Accommodation: Buca di Bacco, as above.

Day 2: after a short transfer you enjoy a scenic walk across the inland hills, with far-reaching views in clear weather across the bay to Vesuvius. Your path leads through olive groves and orchards to reach Marina del Cantone. (10km, 3.5hrs)

Accommodation: Hotel delle Sirene (3*), Marina del Cantone. This friendly hotel is located right by the sea, with a seafront restaurant and its own beach for guests’ use. Marinella Caputo is a wonderful host and a great cook too – her antipasti are particularly delicious. Bedrooms at the front of the hotel enjoy sea views, while those at the back have a terrace or balcony.

Day 3: today we recommend that you take the opportunity to visit the peninsula’s westernmost point, Punta Campanella, separated by just 3 miles of water from Capri. Both our suggested routes start with a bus ride to Termini (pay locally), after which you can choose from a relaxed 8-kilometre route that descends gently through the western foothills of Mount San Costanzo to the lighthouse, or a challenging 11-kilometre walk via the panoramic summit of Mount San Costanzo that descends steeply along the ridge to the headland. For a much easier day, from Marina del Cantone you can stroll around the nearby headland, past a Saracen watchtower, to the characteristic cove of Recommone, where you can have lunch at the cove’s restaurant (pay locally). Alternatively, you could join one of the boat trips along the coast organised by Marinella’s husband (pay locally).

Accommodation: Hotel delle Sirene, as above.

Day 4: this is a varied walk that leads northwards across the Sorrento Peninsula along mule tracks, paved paths and quiet lanes through gently rolling hills coated with olive and citrus groves, pine woods and stands of carob trees. You walk through several pretty villages with beautiful churches boasting magnificent tiled floors, and also pass various viewpoints, some of which look across to Naples and Mount Vesuvius in clear weather. As you approach the northern coast, you enjoy a real sense of completion to finally arrive at the famous Grand Tour resort of Sorrento. (15km, 5hrs)

Accommodation: Hotel Antiche Mura (4*), Sorrento. This is a handsome hotel decorated with great style and elegance. Located centrally, near Piazza Tasso, it is built on the site of the old town walls (hence the name), parts of which can still be seen in the peaceful gardens, which boast a pool. We include rooms with a balcony. You stay on a bed and breakfast basis, leaving you free to take your pick of the town's restaurants.
Upgrade option: Hotel Excelsior Vittoria (5*), Sorrento. Grand and opulent, as befits its 5-star status, yet with friendly staff, the Excelsior Vittoria exudes fin-de-siècle elegance and is truly luxurious, with 5 acres of gardens (a mixture of lawns, flower beds and citrus groves). Breakfast only is included. Prices from £150pp for 3 nights.

Day 5: for a final walk, take a boat (pay locally) to Capri, where we suggest a route that reveals the island's rugged cliffs and quiet, pine-clad corners. (10km, 3hrs)

Accommodation: Hotel Antiche Mura, as above.

Day 6: spend your last day relaxing, either in the hotel gardens or on one of the small beaches (there are a couple in Sorrento itself, as well as some others within a short bus ride). You could also take a boat trip (pay locally) – some companies offer excursions around the peninsula while others offer trips to the islands of Ischia and Procida.

Accommodation: Hotel Antiche Mura, as above.

Recommendations for extra nights: Hotel delle Sirene (Marina del Cantone) is a good choice, giving you the chance to walk to Punta Campanella on one day and to take a boat trip along the coast on the other.

Extensions: If you are flying via Naples why not add on a stay at the 3* Hotel Miramare, located right on the seafront this is a friendly hotel full of original Art Nouveau elegance.
