Sardinia's Rich InteriorA Journey through the heart of a Nation
The landscape of Sardinia is rich and diverse, ranging from rugged mountains to dense woodland, lush meadows and a coast of hidden covers and expansive dunes. Neolithic burial chambers can be found throughout the interior while medieval watchtowers stand sentinel along the clifftops. The rich architectural heritage alludes back to a time when Sardinia became wealtnhy and powerful through the richest mines in Italy and, today, we share that former opulence with you in our choice of hotels. A hire car and detailed walking and cultural notes allow you to explore Sardinia at your own pace, and welcoming hotels in quiet villages await you at the end of your day. Nights: 7
Starting point: Is Benas Country Lodge (4*), near the small village of Putzu Idu on the Sinis Peninsula, a protected haven for wildlife. This charming and elegand house has a delightful restaurant offering excellent regional and Italian cuisine and robust Sardinian wines. Day 1: take the time to explore this dramatic peninsula and the vast lagoons where flocks of pink flamingos can be found as well as the ruins of Phoenician Tharros. Accommodation: Is Benas Country Lodge (4*) as above Day 2: from Putzu Idu, you continue your journey travelling through the heart of Sardinia to Oliena and ancient vineyards and olive groves. Accommodation: Hotel Su Gologone (4*). The intimate buildings of this hotel are scattered among shaded gardens, terraces and courtyards where you can relax after a day's discovery. The décor of this 'living museum' complements the wonderful standards of service and the lavish cuisine in the fine restaurant, with its vast 100-year old fireplace used to slowly roast su porcheddu, or suckling pig, a Sardinian speciality. Day 3 & 4: we have several recommendations during your two days here to give you the opportunity to thoroughly immerse yourself in the peace and quiet of rural Sardinia. Head into the hills of Monte Corrasi and Monte Tiscali to enjoy the rural countryside. For coastal walking, Cala Gonone is nearby - walk down the coast to Cala di Luna and take a boat back (check times and pay locally). Accommodation: Hotel Su Gologone (4*) as above. Day 5: leaving Oliena, you drive across the width of the island to the Riviera del Corallo an enchanting Alghero, where Catalan is still spoken, a reminder of past conquests. Accommodation: Villa Las Tronas (5*), Alghero. This sumptuous hotel is set in splendid isolation on a private headland with many rooms overlooking the turqoise sea. As the former holiday home of Italian royalty, the Villa Las Tronas still offers the same levels of sophistication and elegance that make a fitting end to your holiday. Day 6: we suggest a number of idyllic coastal walks including one that descends 700 steps to visit the Grotta del Nuttono. You can also visit the area of Torralba and the Valley of the Nuraghi with its 40 archaeological sites. Acdommodation: Villa Las Tronas (5*) as above. Seasonal Variation: When the Is Benas Country Lodge is closed (up to 16 May) this holiday is offered using the exclusive and secluded 3* Hotel le Dune, situated on the pristine Unesco-[protected dunes of the Costa Verde, from where we offer walks in the hills of Monte Linas.
