The Lakes & Julian AlpsBled, Bohinj & the Sava Dolinka Nights: 7
Starting point: Vila Triglav (3*), Kranjska Gora. Located near Lake Jasna on the outskirts of this famous Alpine village, your first hotel is just a few kilometres from the borders with Austria and Italy. It has just eight small rooms, but excellent facilities that include an indoor pool and sauna. There is also a restaurant close by with a terrace from where you can enjoy views over the lake. Choose to dine here or in the village itself (pay locally in all cases), where we can also offer the very friendly Hotel Kotnik if you prefer to stay more centrally (please contact us for prices). Day 1: for your first day at Kranjska Gora, we suggest a circular walk through the Sava Dolinka Valley, which is framed by splendid mountains. You follow tranquil paths by the river – which has its source here and ends its journey in the Black Sea – eventually leading to a narrow gorge where you can climb to reach the lower waterfall, before taking a gentle track back into town. (12km, 4hrs) Accommodation: Vila Triglav, as above. Day 2: you take an easy-going forest track south to reach the solitary hut of Koca v Krnici, where you can pause to take in the awe-inspiring scenery. Its setting is peaceful and isolated, and is framed by a fearsome and spectacular range of mountains. You return via an alpine road, stopping to admire a Russian chapel en route. (14km, 4.5hrs) Accommodation: Vila Triglav, as above. Day 3: the day starts with a transfer to a high-altitude location in the mountains known as Rudno Polje, which is also a popular spot used by hikers and climbers to make the epic ascent of Mount Triglav. From here, you cross high, panoramic meadows before descending through woodland to the lower Bohinj Valley. Wandering through rustic villages surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, you then continue along the shore of beautiful Lake Bohinj (or take a boat – pay locally), the mightiest peaks of the Julian Alps mirrored in the calm waters. (15km, 5hrs) Accommodation: Hotel Zlatorog (3*), Ukanc. Comprising a charming chalet-style building and its annexe, this hotel occupies a peaceful spot in the picturesque hamlet of Ukanc, at the western end of Lake Bohinj. The somewhat old-fashioned bedrooms are more than compensated for by the friendly staff, the large swimming pool and the relaxing atmosphere. Enjoy dinner in the atmospheric à la carte restaurant or at a nearby restaurant (pay locally in both cases). Day 4: we offer a choice of two walks for your day in Ukanc. A shorter one leads you to the dramatic nearby waterfall of Slap Savica, one of Slovenia’s famous sights, with a 60-metre drop. There is also a longer route to the Mostnica Gorge, known for its erosion potholes, a natural bridge and numerous waterfalls. Alternatively, you could take the cable car (pay locally) into the mountains above the far end of Lake Bohinj in order to access some marvellous high-level walks with sweeping views. (8km, 2.5hrs or 20km, 5.5hrs) Accommodation: Hotel Zlatorog, as above. Day 5: today's walk starts with a transfer, after which you criss-cross the River Sava Bohinjka, passing through woodland and farmland (across which are scattered numerous handsome farmhouses), to the Ribno Plateau, where you are greeted by a sweeping panorama of Lake Bled and the surrounding mountains. (9.5km, 3.5hrs) Accommodation: Hotel Ribno (4*), Ribno. The hotel boasts broad views, tennis courts and spa facilities. Choose to dine in the village or on the shore of Lake Bled, a 30-minute stroll away (pay locally in both cases). Day 6: for your final day we recommend the long but scenic walk to the Vintgar Gorge (for which a small entrance fee is payable locally), which takes you along the shores of Lake Bled to panoramic Blejski Castle, then through a string of small villages towards another excellent viewpoint, and finally along a wooded trail to the gorge. Here, a series of boardwalks and bridges lead you spectacularly upstream along the entire length of the gorge. A gentle country trail then leads you back to Lake Bled. Another option for your day here is to wander across the surrounding countryside to reach the delightful town of Radovljica for a spot of lunch and sightseeing. Alternatively, you may well prefer to spend your last day relaxing by the lake and enjoying the memorable setting, perhaps hiring a boat to row over the lake to ring the ‘wishing bell’ on the island! (20km, 6hrs or 10km, 3hrs) Accommodation: Hotel Ribno, as above. Walking chart: the chart gives the distance and an approximation of the ascents and descents involved each day. If comparing holidays, please note the scale of each chart as this can differ.
Recommendations for extra nights: Hotel Zlatorog (Ukanc) is a great walkers’ hotel and extra nights here will give you more time to explore the mountains. You could also book additional nights at Hotel Ribno (or Vila Bled) purely for relaxation. Extension: if you are flying via Ljubljana, why not add on a stay in the Slovene capital, a fascinating city with a blend of Art Nouveau, Baroque and Renaissance architecture? We offer the 4-star Grand Hotel Union, complete with an indoor pool, or the smart 3-star Hotel Garni.
